Abstract

Family ideally provides a sense of security and comfort for individuals, yet not all individuals can freely share personal matters with their families. This study aims to examine the relationship between authoritative parenting styles, long-distance parent-child communication intensity, and the self-disclosure of Out-of-Town students. The theoretical frameworks utilized include John Bowlby's Attachment Theory and Social Exchange Theory. The research involved 60 respondents who are active students at Diponegoro University, originating from outside Semarang and living independently far from their families. Hypothesis testing using Kendall Tau analysis indicated a positive correlation between authoritative parenting styles, long-distance parent-child communication intensity, and Out-of-Town students' openness towards their families. This reveals that the more authoritative the parenting style, the greater the willingness of Out-of-Town students to share personal matters with their families. This aligns with Attachment Theory, which assumes that responsiveness and warmth in parenting tend to foster secure attachment relationships in children, thereby encouraging openness. Additionally, the research findings suggest that higher communication intensity between parents and children during physical separation correlates with greater openness of Out-of-Town students towards their families. This corresponds with Social Exchange Theory, stating that individuals tend to maintain relationships deemed beneficial. The study underscores the importance of consistent and meaningful communication between parents and children in maintaining emotional closeness despite physical distance. It provides insights into how authoritative parenting and high-intensity communication can enhance Out-of-Town students' openness towards their families, thereby aiding in the maintenance of family relationships, especially in long-distance contexts

Abstract

The growth of information and communication technology has brought various innovations to the field of education, including its learning systems. The presence of Chat GPT can provide convenience and enhance efficiency in the learning process within the education system in the era of Education 4.0. However, there are potential challenges associated with its use, such as the possibility of plagiarism and academic dishonesty. Using quantitative research methods, this study provides empirical results regarding the influence of ethical perceptions and the frequency of peer group communication on the level of Chat GPT usage by students as a digital learning medium in the era of Education 4.0. The simple linear regression analysis technique employed in this study is conducted to test the influence between one independent variable and one dependent variable. The findings of this research explain student behavior in the use of Chat GPT for academic purposes as a digital learning medium through ethical perceptions and the frequency of peer group communication.

Abstract

This study examines the response of the Kebumen District Communication and Information Office (Dinas Kominfo) to media reports regarding the status of Kebumen District as the poorest district in Central Java in early 2023. The study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods and applies the Situational Crisis Communication Theory and Image Repair Theory. Data collection techniques include documentation studies and interviews. The results show that the Kebumen District Communication and Information Office conducted crisis management in three stages: pre-crisis, crisis response, and post-crisis. In the precrisis stage, the Dinas Kominfo monitored the media to identify issues and potential crises. They then wrote monitoring reports including recommendations for addressing the issues, but lacked standard operating procedures, teams, or crisis management training. Furthermore, in the crisis response stage, the Dinas Kominfo focused on dominating positive news and collaborated with local media, although they did not hold press conferences or issue press releases. In the post-crisis stage, the Dinas Kominfo sought to repair reputation by emphasizing positive news, engaging in two-way communication with the public, and organizing public events to divert attention from the poverty crisis. It was found that there were no specific indicators to evaluate the success of the crisis management conducted in the post-crisis stage. The statements made by the Dinas Kominfo regarding the situation tended to fall into the "reducing the offensiveness" category in Image Repair Theory, acknowledging mistakes and intending to reduce the negative impact of the crisis. The crisis management strategies employed were defensive, aiming to protect reputation, reduce negative impacts, and not taking further actions. Overall, although the Dinas Kominfo has made efforts to address the reputation crisis caused by media coverage, there is still room for improvement in implementing crisis management and evaluating the success of the strategies applied.

Abstract

Generation Z is the largest age group in Indonesia, accounting for approximately 27.94 percent of the total population. Online gaming has become an integral part of daily life for Generation Z in Indonesia. As a generation raised in the digital era, Generation Z shows a strong attachment to technology, including online games, which, when played with high intensity, can lead to addiction. One of the most popular online games among Generation Z is Mobile Legends. This study aims to examine the influence of peer group communication intensity and self-control on the level of addiction to Mobile Legends among Generation Z. The study employs a quantitative explanatory method with purposive sampling involving 108 respondents. The results indicate that peer group communication intensity has a significant effect on the level of online gaming addiction, where higher communication intensity within peer groups correlates with a greater likelihood of addiction. On the other hand, low self control also significantly contributes to higher levels of online gaming addiction, especially in Mobile Legends

Abstract

The phenomenon of students pursuing higher education in Indonesia often involves additional challenges when working on their final thesis, particularly due to the distance from their families. This distance frequently leads to complex academic pressures and may result in study delays as well as tragic incidents involving final-year students. Long-distance communication through media becomes crucial in maintaining relationships, providing emotional support, and motivating students amid the limitations of distance and time. This study aims to explore how the communication experiences between students living away from home and their parents influence the motivation for completing their final thesis. The theory applied is the Family Communication Patterns Theory by Ascan F. Koerner and Mary Anne Fitzpatrick, using a phenomenological approach and data collected through in-depth interviews with four student informants. The results of the study indicate that long-distance family communication plays a key role in supporting the thesis-writing process. This communication serves as a medium for maintaining emotional connections, offering support, and providing motivation, despite facing various challenges such as time differences, busy schedules, and technological obstacles like unstable internet connections and limited access to communication devices. The study also found that strong conversational orientation within families creates a supportive environment for students to share their academic progress and challenges, even though parents may not fully understand the specific details of the final thesis. Parental support, both emotional and financial, helps students feel supported throughout the academic process. Open communication between students and parents is also crucial, although some students prefer to seek advice from friends or siblings rather than their parents on specific issues related to their thesis.

Abstract

This research examines the influence of product information exposure and sales promotion on the intention to use BRT Trans Semarang. Although BLU UPTD Trans Semarang continues to disseminate product information and sales promotions through various media, BRT Trans Semarang has not been able to reach its monthly passenger target. This research aims to understand the effect of exposure to product information and sales promotions on the intention to use BRT Trans Semarang using Information Integration Theory and Cognitive Response Approach Theory. The sampling technique is non-probability sampling with a total sample of 100 respondents who are people who live in Semarang City and know the product information of BRT Trans Semarang, and have seen the sales promotion of BRT Trans Semarang. Through simple regression analysis techniques to test the first hypothesis and second hypothesis of the study, it was found that there is an influence between exposure to product information on intention to use BRT Trans Semarang as evidenced by a significance value of 0.002 which is smaller than 0.05 and a coefficient value of 0.424 so that the first hypothesis is accepted. This means that the higher the exposure to product information, the higher the consumer interest in using BRT Trans Semarang. Then the second hypothesis test shows that there is an influence between exposure to sales information on intention to use BRT Trans Semarang as evidenced by a significance value of <0.001 which is smaller than 0.05 and a coefficient value of 0.590 so that the first hypothesis is accepted. This means that the higher the exposure to sales promotion, the higher the consumer intention to use BRT Trans Semarang

Abstract

This research addresses the rapidly growing trend of using pay later services in Indonesiain 2023, especially within the fashion sector. Shopee PayLater, one of the pay later services inIndonesia, has conducted sales promotions focused on enticing users with benefits such ascashback and other promotions, without providing education on the risks and obligations thatconsumers should understand before adopting the service. While this service offers benefits toconsumers in terms of meeting urgent needs, there are also notable risks, particularly concerningexcessive debt management, financial difficulties among the younger generation, and theescalating amount of unpaid debts within the pay later services in Indonesia.Using a positivist quantitative method, this research applies the Behavioral LearningTheory with the concept of Operant Conditioning to explain the influence of sales promotions, and the Risk Management Decision-Making Theory as a basis to understand the impact of riskperception on purchasing decisions. This study involved respondents aged 17-39 in theJabodetabek area who have been exposed to promotions and have either used or are currentlyusing Shopee PayLater. Regression analysis results indicate that sales promotions have a positiveinfluence of 14 percent on purchasing fashion products using Shopee PayLater, while riskperception has a negative influence of 28.2 percent. Consequently, Shopee PayLater needs tooptimize promotional messaging and enhance service security to manage consumer riskperception.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology and social media has led to the emergence of various new job opportunities, shifting job trends towards the use of digital media. For video creators, animators, photographers, graphic designers, or influencers, the presence of the Instagram social media platform can be utilized to shape a self-representation that supports their work, while also serving as a space to freely express themselves. Within this perceived safe space, Instagram users sometimes share highly personal and sensitive information on social media. Therefore, awareness and knowledge of social media behavior are needed to minimize the risks that may arise from the freedom of expression and self-disclosure in the online world. This research aims to understand how creative workers manage privacy through the Instagram social media platform. The study employs qualitative research methods, an interpretive paradigm, phenomenological approach, and in-depth interview data collection techniques. In analyzing the unique experiences of the informants, the Communication Privacy Management theory and the concept of self-presentation in Dramaturgy Theory are utilized. The results of this research reveal how creative workers who are Instagram users strive to manage their privacy to shape an ideal self-image to support their work. In operating Instagram while considering information boundaries, creative workers engage in a series of stages ranging from observation, planning, categorizing information, implementing strategies, to monitoring their posts. This study also highlights that there are several criteria considered by creative workers to set their privacy boundaries in the effort of self-disclosure. Each individual has specific motives for uploading information, considering cultural aspects, social context, gender values, and weighing the risks and benefits as consequences of self-disclosure. Additionally, the ideal self-presentation on Instagram is also manifested by creative workers using strategies such as self-promotion and ingratiation.
