Abstract

This study aims to identify and explain the relationship between exposure to information on digital ethics and digital competence on social media behavior. The method used is a quantitative explanatory approach with a population of individuals participating in the "Indonesia Makin Cakap Digital" program through event.literasidigital.id and who are social media users. The results indicate that exposure to information on digital ethics and social media behavior have a significant relationship, with a very weak and positive correlation. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that exposure to information on digital ethics is a more important factor influencing social media behavior compared to digital competence. Therefore, Indonesia needs to implement digital ethics development programs to enhance positive behavior on social media.

Abstract

Data from the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency (BP2MI) shows that throughout 2022, a total of 200,761 individuals were sent abroad to work as Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI), also commonly known as Indonesian Workers (TKI). For TKI who already have families, they are required to engage in long-distance communication with the family members left behind, particularly with children and parents who experience these long-distance relationships. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method to describe the maintenance of long-distance relationships conducted by children and parents who work as TKI abroad. The research uses Communication Privacy Management Theory, Maintenance Relationship Theory, and Relational Dialectics Theory. Data collection techniques in this research include in-depth interviews with informants using an interview guide as a data collection tool. The results show long-distance communication is conducted by children and parents through social media, especially WhatsApp, with frequent communication. The children and parents interact almost daily. Communication barriers that arise include semantic barriers or double interpretation of communication messages. Relationship maintenance efforts apply elements of positivity, openness, assurance, joint activities, mediated communication, and avoidance. Self-disclosure between children and parents involves applying a privacy boundary between private information and collective information. Communication management regarding privacy issues is handled through privacy secrecy commitments and threat methods between children and parents. Tensions in the parent-child relationship arise due to privacy turbulence, particularly due to intentional or unintentional privacy breaches and misunderstandings about privacy commitments. Children and parents manage conflicts in their longdistance relationships by evaluating and improving communication and strengthening commitments

Abstract

The oversharing behavior of Generation Z on Instagram is influenced by the lack of communication intensity between parents and children, which leads to inadequate supervision and guidance in social media use. As a result, Generation Z tends to seek social validation through oversharing, blurring the boundaries of privacy due to excessive self-disclosure. This study aims to determine the influence of parental communication intensity and self-disclosure on oversharing on Instagram, using an explanatory method and a non-probability sampling technique involving 100 respondents. Based on social penetration theory and family relationship schema, the results of the simple linear regression hypothesis test show that parental communication intensity is inversely related to oversharing, while self-disclosure has a positive relationship with oversharing. The significance value obtained is 0.000.

Abstract

Gender inequality between men and women still occurs frequently across various aspects such as social, political, economic, cultural, and industrial spheres, particularly in terms of accessibility. Discrimination against women remains widespread and pervasive in many areas of their lives. The Gadis Kretek series, which premiered on Netflix in November 2023, highlights the importance of understanding gender inequality. Gadis Kretek delivers a social critique on the patriarchal culture and discrimination against women in Indonesia. This study employs a qualitative approach with descriptive methods to analyze and deeply identify the interpretation of gender inequality as experienced by women in the series Gadis Kretek, using hermeneutic analysis. The study draws upon organizational communication theory, standpoint theory, and liberal feminism. Data collection techniques include document observation. The findings reveal discrimination in various aspects of women's lives in the 1960s, particularly in the kretek industry. The main character, Dasiyah, faces obstacles when attempting to continue her family’s business but is not given the same opportunities as men. This inequality is evident in entrenched gender stereotypes and limited access to opportunities and resources for women. A grammatical hermeneutic approach uncovers the historical and narrative context, highlighting workplace gender discrimination, where women like Dasiyah must fight against patriarchal culture to pursue their rights and aspirations. Organizational communication theory and standpoint feminism explain how power structures and gender hierarchies influence social and professional interactions in the series' narrative. Ultimately, Gadis Kretek reflects women's ongoing struggle against gender inequality, a theme that persists into the modern era

Abstract

E-cigarettes (electronic cigarettes) or vape have become a new consumption trend by teenagers, supported by the latest data where the highest number of vape users in Indonesia, around 22 percent, are teenagers aged 15 to 19 years. Studies show that if you have friends who smoke, over time they tend to become people who intend to, experiment, or become regular smokers. Apart from that, the presence of celebrity endorsers who support a brand can also increase purchase intentions. This research is a type of explanatory quantitative research. Social Learning Theory is used to explain the relevance of peer group communication to interest in using. Meanwhile, when exposed to celebrity endorsers, the Source Credibility Model is used as a theoretical basis. A simple linear regression test on the intensity of peer group communication on interest in using electronic cigarettes (vape) shows a significance value of 0.000, which means it is very significant or there is an influence so the hypothesis can be accepted. The significance value of exposure to celebrity endorsers on interest in using electronic cigarettes (vape) is 0.000, which means it is very significant because 0.000 ≤ 0.01 so the hypothesis is accepted where there is an influence.

Abstract

Divorce and remarriage within a family often lead to interpersonal conflicts because the adjustment process for a teenager is not easy, especially when they have to communicate with stepparents. A teenager must adapt to life with a new family. This study aims to understand how family communication can resolve interpersonal conflicts and the strategies for resolving them between teenagers and stepparents. The theories used in this research are Family Relationship Schema Theory, Relationship Maintenance Theory, and Interpersonal Conflict Management Theory. This study uses an interpretive paradigm with a phenomenological approach and in-depth interview data collection techniques conducted with six individuals from three sets of teenage families and their stepparents. The results of this study indicate the importance of establishing dialogue between teenagers and stepparents to build trust within a blended family. Trust is formed through repeated shared experiences, such as daily family activities. Additionally, financial dependence of a teenager is also a reason to build trust. The variation in relationship schemas and family types in blended families is caused by different experiences determined by the communication patterns within each family. Relationship maintenance strategies, including openness, understanding, and involvement of third parties, are important to prevent conflicts in blended families. Withdrawal and exit response strategies are often used in conflict resolution, although they can create new conflicts due to unresolved feelings. This study emphasizes the importance of communication patterns in the dynamics and relationships of blended families
