Abstract

Background: Free radicals play a major role in causing damage to cells and body tissues, which can trigger various degenerative diseases. One preventive strategy is the use of antioxidants. Moringa oleifera leaves are a herb known to be rich in phytochemical compounds with high antioxidant potential. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the phytochemical content and antioxidant activity of ethanol extract of Moringa leaves as a natural ingredient with potential use in the development of pharmaceutical products or functional foods. Methods: Moringa leaves were extracted using a maceration method with 96% ethanol as a solvent. Phytochemical tests were conducted to identify secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, steroids, and terpenoids. Antioxidant activity was analyzed using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) method, and IC₅₀ values were calculated to determine their antioxidant potential. Results: The ethanol extract of Moringa leaves contained flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and alkaloids. The DPPH test results showed that the extract had an IC₅₀ value of 65.4 µg/mL, which is categorized as moderate antioxidant activity. Conclusion: The ethanol extract of Moringa leaves contains diverse phytochemicals and significant antioxidant activity. This demonstrates the great potential of Moringa leaves as a source of natural antioxidants in the development of herbal medicines and functional food products.

Abstract

Burns are a condition that is often found in the world in various cases such as accidents. The incidence of burns will probably increase as human activities become more complex. Wounds that are not treated immediately tend to become infected and cause death. Fish oil is one of the ingredients that has been studied for wound healing. Previous research shows that fish oil is rich in long-chain omega-3 fatty acids such as docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid, which have anti-inflammatory effects. However, there has not been much research on the type of fish oil used and the wound healing process. The aim of this study was to determine the wound-healing activity of milkfish (Chanos chanos Forsskal.), patin (Pangasius djambal), and eel (Anguilla bicolor) fish oil. Tests were carried out on 25 mice as an experimental animal model for burn wounds. Data on percent wound reduction and the re-epithelialization process were statistically calculated using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by a post-hoc LSD test. The research results showed that milkfish oil, patin fish oil, and eel fish oil in a concentration of 10% on an ointment basis were able to reduce wounds significantly. Eel fish oil shows the greatest burn wound healing process with re-epithelialization when compared to other oils. The type of fish oil affects the wound healing process.

Abstract

This study aims to synthesize copoly (Anethole-stearyl acrylate, SA) through cationic polymerization at room temperature (28–36°C) under a nitrogen atmosphere. The synthesis was carried out without a solvent using BF3O(C2H5)2 as the initiator. SA was added in varying weights of 2%, 4%, and 6% relative to anethole. The product obtained from the synthesis was then applied as a phenol adsorbent using the batch method at different contact times. FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) analysis showed that methoxy group (-OCH3) termination occurred at wavenumber 1147 cm-1, followed by the loss of vinyl group (C=C) at 1633–1654 cm-1. In addition, the loss of =C-H vinyl bending and stretching group absorption occurred at 964–998 cm-1 and 3025–3095 cm-1, respectively. Structural analysis using 1H-NMR showed the loss of the vinyl group proton signal at a chemical shift (δH) of 5.8–39 ppm. The addition of 2%, 4%, and 6% SA led to an increase in intrinsic viscosity of 26.891, 41.093, and 55.336, respectively. The morphology of copoly showed the presence of various cavities. The degradation temperature of the product increased with the addition of SA. During the application of copoly as a phenol adsorbent, the 6% (w/w) concentration had the largest adsorption capacity of 2.22 mg/g.

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem that remains a serious concern in Indonesia, particularly in coastal areas, which generally suffer from low levels of well-being, limited food access, and vulnerable environmental conditions. Stunting impacts not only a child's physical growth but also their cognitive development and future productivity. Furthermore, coastal communities possess a rich culture and local wisdom that can play a crucial role in maintaining food security and family nutritional status. This study aims to analyze in depth the role of local wisdom in preventing stunting in toddlers in coastal areas. This study used a qualitative approach with descriptive methods, through in-depth interviews with community leaders, mothers of toddlers, and health workers in coastal villages. Participatory observation and documentation studies were also conducted to obtain comprehensive data regarding local wisdom practices still practiced by the community. The results showed that forms of local wisdom such as the tradition of consuming fresh fish, the use of local plants (moringa leaves, sweet potatoes, bananas), and social values such as mutual cooperation and food arisan (social gatherings) have a significant contribution to preventing stunting . This local wisdom supports the fulfillment of balanced nutrition, strengthens social solidarity, and raises awareness of the importance of a healthy diet for toddlers. Modernization, changing consumption patterns, and coastal environmental degradation threaten the sustainability of these practices. Therefore, integrating local wisdom into government programs such as Posyandu (Integrated Health Posts), PKK (Family Welfare Movement), and nutrition education is necessary to strengthen culturally based stunting prevention strategies. Therefore, preserving and revitalizing local wisdom can be a sustainable solution to reducing stunting prevalence in Indonesia's coastal areas.

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem that remains a major challenge in Indonesia, particularly in rural areas with limited access to nutrition education, sanitation, and health services. This community service program aims to improve the knowledge of pregnant women and mothers of toddlers regarding balanced nutrition as a means of preventing stunting in Assisted Village X. Activities included balanced nutrition counseling, demonstrations on making nutritious complementary foods (MP-ASI), screening for toddler nutritional status, and mentoring families at risk of stunting. A total of 65 participants (22 pregnant women and 43 mothers of toddlers) participated in the program. Results showed an increase in participant knowledge, with an average pre-test score of 55.3, rising to 86.1 in the post-test. Furthermore, 12 toddlers at risk of stunting were identified and provided with further mentoring. The program also encouraged the formation of "Village Nutrition Friends" (Sahabat Gizi Desa) cadres as a sustainability effort for the program. This program has proven effective in increasing community knowledge and awareness regarding the importance of balanced nutrition to prevent stunting.
