Abstract

Strontium titanate (SrTiO3) refers to a perovskite structure compound reported to have photocatalyst properties. It is well-known that modifying the particle morphology is found to be capable of enhancing the photocatalytic activity as it can increase the reaction sites on the solid surface. Molten salt synthesis is one of the compound synthesis methods to produce the homogeneous particle size as well as the unique morphology. One of the parameters determining the product compound obtained using the molten salt method is the type of salt used. In this study, the SrTi0.95Fe0.05O3 was synthesized by the molten salt method using NaCl, KCl, and NaCl/KCl salt. It also studied the effects of chloride salt type to structure, vibration mode, morphology particle, band gap energy, and thermal stability of product samples. The diffractograms showed that SrTi0.95Fe0.05O3 were successfully synthesized; however, the sample obtained using molten KCl salt had the impurities of TiO2, and SrCO3 (residual of precursors) indicating that the KCl flux was insufficient to make a complete reaction. The characteristic of infrared vibration modes of the SrTiO3 compound were found in all samples. The image of scanning electron microscopy showed that all particle morphology was in the quadrate-particle shape, and the SrTi0.95Fe0.05O3-KCl sample had the smallest particles for having the largest surface area. The Kubelka-Munk equation calculation results showed that all samples’ band gap energy was approximately at ∼3 eV. The DSC curve showed a relatively similar pattern; therefore, the thermal stability properties of all samples were similar.

Abstract

Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light can cause various skin problems, such as premature aging, hyperpigmentation, erythema, and even skin cancer. The use of sunscreen is a primary preventative measure to reduce these risks. However, most commercial sunscreen products contain synthetic chemicals that can cause irritation or other side effects on sensitive skin. Therefore, a safer and more environmentally friendly natural-based sunscreen preparation is needed. This study aimed to formulate a sunscreen cream based on green tea (Camellia sinensis) extract and evaluate its physical stability and effectiveness in absorbing UV light. Green tea extract was obtained through a maceration method using 70% ethanol, then formulated into a cream preparation with varying concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 15%. The evaluation included organoleptic tests, pH, homogeneity, viscosity, spreadability, temperature stability, and in vitro Sun Protection Factor (SPF) calculation using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The results showed that all formulas exhibited fairly good physical stability during storage. The formula with a 10% extract concentration showed the most optimal results, with an SPF of 13.2, which is categorized as moderate protection, and good physical stability. This study concludes that green tea extract has potential as a natural active ingredient in sunscreen preparations, especially at a concentration of 10%.

Abstract

Burns are a condition that is often found in the world in various cases such as accidents. The incidence of burns will probably increase as human activities become more complex. Wounds that are not treated immediately tend to become infected and cause death. Fish oil is one of the ingredients that has been studied for wound healing. Previous research shows that fish oil is rich in long-chain omega-3 fatty acids such as docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid, which have anti-inflammatory effects. However, there has not been much research on the type of fish oil used and the wound healing process. The aim of this study was to determine the wound-healing activity of milkfish (Chanos chanos Forsskal.), patin (Pangasius djambal), and eel (Anguilla bicolor) fish oil. Tests were carried out on 25 mice as an experimental animal model for burn wounds. Data on percent wound reduction and the re-epithelialization process were statistically calculated using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by a post-hoc LSD test. The research results showed that milkfish oil, patin fish oil, and eel fish oil in a concentration of 10% on an ointment basis were able to reduce wounds significantly. Eel fish oil shows the greatest burn wound healing process with re-epithelialization when compared to other oils. The type of fish oil affects the wound healing process.
