Abstract

Organic wastes has potential as a renewable energy resource. The waste could be converted as a gaseous fuel through gasification method. The objective of this reserach was to study the performance of gasification of various organic waste using fixed bed updraft gasifier especially in term of production of heat and stability of gas production. The raw material that used are rice husk, sawdust pellet, and wood branch. The stabilization of gas production was measurdd based on the time interval of gas could be burnt. The result shows that the kind of biomass has influenced the heating rate and stability of gas production. Sawdust pellet have the biggest burning stabilisation, that is 45 minute of burning time, compare to rice husk that have 15 minute burning time, and wood branch that have 30 minutes burning time. The main problem of gasification of organic waste was less stabilization of gas production due to low material compaction and uncontinuous mass flow.

Abstract

Community participation in mangrove forest ecosystem conservation is an effort to overcome and avoid mangrove ecosystem deterioration. The findings show that mangrove forests in Kampung Laut’s coastal region, particularly in the village of Ujung Alang, are still well preserved due to diverse mangrove planting efforts. Currently, the community uses mangrove plants by converting some plant sections into food and using the plant’s stems as building materials. Efforts have been made to preserve mangrove forest ecosystems through the Sustainable Utilisation of Mangrove Forests for the Production of Natural Dyes with a Zero Waste System. The following are the activities: 1) Dissemination of the concept to raise public awareness of the potential of mangrove plants as a source of raw materials for natural dyes to increase community income and sustainably manage mangrove forests, 2) Raising the awareness of the younger generation to improve the local economy through the development of micro-scale SMEs in the field of mangrove-based natural dyes, and 3) Technical training on thinning/logging and sustainable mangrove planting to acquaint participants with the concepts of thinning/logging and sustainable man Establish the program’s purpose, which should be divided into six activities. Many farmer groups anticipate that this community service under the auspices of Krida Wana Lestari will assist them in improving their existing products and estimating the potential process of their natural mangroves. This program raises public awareness of the mangrove plant’s potential as a source of raw materials for natural colours. In addition, this activity enables the community to do technical logging and sustainable mangrove planting to support the availability of raw materials for natural dyes. Consequently, the creation and development of a local economic business unit with a green entrepreneurship incubator model based on mangrove conservation and zero waste from natural dye SMEs have begun.

Abstract

Amalgamation to gold in artisanal small scale generally uses mercury (Hg) that decrease the quality of environment especially water. A study of mercury artisanal small scale gold mine waste water was conducted by utilizing simple technology using Sub Surface Flow - Constructed Wetland (SSF-CW) system. This system is a combination of phytoremediation methods using Echinodorus palaefolius plant with zeolite as growth media. The purpose of this study was to determine the stability of SSF-CW in reducing Hg concentration in water. This SSF-CW system model has dimensions of 820 mm x 320 mm x 585 mm consisting of 3 zones, namely the inlet zone, the reaction zone and the outlet zone. The study was conducted with an initial HgCl2 waste concentration of 14.94 mg / L which was carried out in two stages, continuous and batch for 12 hours and lasted for 3 days for each stage. Effluent samples were taken every 0 hours, 4 hours, 8 hours, and 12 hours for mercury concentration analysis using Direct Mercury Analyzer (DMA). The result showed that SSF-CW could support the process of reducing Hg concentration n wastewater with removal efficiency of 98.99%. Echinodorus had the ability to accumulate metals with a BCF value of 9,117 and the accumulation of Hg in the zeolite (as growth media) was still far from the saturated capacity to absorb mercury.

Abstract

Recycling lithium batteries (LIB) has emerged as an attractive solution in the global pursuit of environmentally friendly practices. The aim of achieving zero–waste hydrometallurgical technology is within reach. This research focuses on utilizing the low-pressure nanofiltration process to address this challenge by separating lithium ions from other ions and achieving a desirable permeate flux. The NCA battery leachate concentrate was obtained through a hydrometallurgical process involving sulfuric acid–peroxide. To ensure the prevention of potential nanofiltration membrane (TS80) fouling, the concentrate is initially filtered using an ultrafiltration membrane (UH004) to remove any particles. The research investigates the impact of pressure (4, 6, and 7 bar), solution concentration (concentrate, 10x, and 50x dilution), and the concentration of the complexing agent (EDTA) on the desired separation performance. The investigation reveals that pressure variations exhibit consistent rejection rates, remaining stable above 80%. A similar trend is observed with the addition of EDTA, which consistently yields rejection rates above 80%. However, when examining different feed concentrations, the rejection of lithium falls below 80% for leachate concentrates. In summary, satisfactory results are obtained by employing nanofiltration with a TS80 membrane at a pressure of 7 bar, a dilution factor of 10x, and using a 0.02M EDTA complexing agent. Meanwhile, it was found that the separation factors (Li⁺/Ni²⁺ = ~8.6, Li⁺/ Co²⁺ = ~7.3, Li⁺/Al³⁺ = ~4.9) and permeate flux ±46.58 L m⁻² h⁻¹. The findings demonstrate good selectivity along with relatively high flux.

Abstract

The agricultural industry, including the cultivation of paddy and vegetables, plays a crucial role in the economy of Padukuhan Dukuh and serves as its residents' primary source of income. Nevertheless, farmers have expressed that the challenge of acquiring subsidized fertilizers from the government substantially hinders the agricultural process. Compound fertilizer, often known as NPK fertilizer, is a specific chemical fertilizer frequently used by farmers to enhance soil fertility rapidly. This community service program aims to spread awareness about using alternative fertilizers (such as compost and liquid organic NPK) to minimize the adverse effects of fertilization on the environment. Additionally, the program seeks to promote the conversion of agricultural and household waste into organic fertilizers. The service activity took place from September 10 to October 14, 2023. Padukuhan Dukuh is the location where the production of alternative organic fertilizers using agricultural and home waste takes place. This service aims to offer support to the members of the "Ngudi Makmur" Farmer Group, located in Padukuhan Dukuh, Sinduharjo, Ngaglik, Sleman, DIY. There were 20 members of the farmer group present at the service. The community service stages are categorized into various implementation methodologies, specifically knowledge sharing, a workshop, monitoring, and evaluation. The results have been collected, and a favorable response from the community has been received. This offers a unique organic NPK fertilizer that is readily available and more efficient. The program has been assessed from various perspectives, including its sustainability. Several aspects must be taken into account to evaluate the program's sustainability. These factors encompass the necessity to enhance the caliber of human resources, augment crop output, maintain the reliability of fertilizer production via compost houses, and consider the economic and socio-cultural values.
