Abstract

Nanoparticle technology has been widely used in various industries because of its advantages in particle size control systems. One example of the use of nanoparticle technology is copper nanoparticles as an antibacterial material. This research focuses on the utilization of leaching waste as a material for the synthesis of copper nanoparticles. The synthesis of copper nanoparticles was carried out by chemical reduction method between chalcopyrite stone leaching waste namely CuSO4 as precursor, Cetyl Trimethyl Ammonium Bromide (CTAB) as surfactant and NaBH4 reducing agent. The synthesized material will be analyzed using UV-Vis spectroscopy. Furthermore, the particle size will be estimated using PSA and its antibacterial properties will be analyzed using the well diffusion method by looking at the effectiveness of the inhibitory power against Escherichia coli FNCC 0049 and Staphylococcus bacteria aureus FNCC 0047. The results of the synthesis obtained the smallest size of 235.7 nm from the ratio of precursor concentration, reducing agent concentration and, a surfactant concentration of 1:20:8. The results of the synthesis of copper nanoparticles with concentrations of 10.000 ppm showed the presence of inhibitory power to overcome Escherichia coli FNCC 0049 and Staphylococcus bacteria aureus FNCC 0047.

Abstract

In the process of flotation of copper-bearing ore, several factors such as the concentration of the collector used and the pH of the fluid used can have an impact. In this study, observations were made on the influence of collector concentration and pH on the recovery of copper ores from Papua, Indonesia. The ore samples were obtained from three different site. Preparation of samples were conducted by crushing and sieving to obtain solid particles with a size of +200 mesh. The fine particles then fed into froth flotation device. Froth flotation operations were carried out at different operating condition namely pH (pH 3, pH 6, and pH 9), xanthate concentration (1300, 2000, and 2600 ppm), and time (3, 5, 7, and 14 minutes). The froth and tailings were collected separately and dried in an oven at 60oC. The feed, froth, and tailings were then subjected to EDX analysis to determine their compositions. The results of the experiment showed that higher collector concentrations did not necessarily lead to increased copper recovery. The appropriate pH conditions, however, could optimize copper recovery. The optimum conditions obtained from this experiment were xanthate concentration of 2000 ppm, pH of 3, and the ore sample 2

Abstract

The present study investigates the effects of nanoparticle geothermal silica (NGS) on the mechanical properties and vulcanization characteristics of rubber compounds with various filler loadings. The rubber compounds were filled with 0, 20, 30, and 40 phr of silica. The properties of NGS were analyzed using transmission electron microscopy, particle size analyzer, and BET surface area analysis to examine its morphology, size distribution, and surface area. The mechanical properties and vulcanization characteristics of the rubber compounds reinforced with NGS were evaluated using a universal testing machine and moving die rheometer. The results showed that NGS possessed the primary particle sizes below 20 nm and a surface area of 168.35 m2/g. The interaction between silica and rubber determined the modulus of the rubber composites and the vulcanization characteristics. The tensile strength of the rubber compounds, meanwhile, showed a significant increase more than threefold as the filler loading increased from 0 phr to 30 phr, followed by a slight decline at 40 phr loading. The addition of 20 phr of silica led to a prolonged scorch time compared to the filler-free compound due to the adsorption of activators and accelerators. However, the scorch time decreased after reaching 30 phr of silica loading, which could be attributed to the higher amount of bound rubber covering a portion of the silica surface, thereby reducing its ability to adsorb the activator. The presence of silica with good thermal conductivity enabled a better heat transfer during the vulcanization process, resulting in shorter curing times for higher loading. Rubber compounds with an NGS loading of 30 phr demonstrated a favorable balance between filler-rubber interactions, vulcanization characteristics, and mechanical properties in the rubber compounds.

Abstract

Minerals containing TiO2 are common in Indonesia, such as ilmenite in iron sand deposits scattered along the country's coasts. Ilmenite is an important source of titanium. One method for making TiO2 from ilmenite is by solubilizing both the Fe and Ti elements in HCl and then immediately hydrolyze the Ti. The leaching of low-grade ilmenite (ground to 0.177-0.149 mm) is studied kinetically by HCl in a stirred reactor. The research was conducted using the caustic fusion method followed by HCl leaching. The leaching reaction kinetics at the optimum conditions are analyzed using response surface methodology (RSM) with a second-order polynomial equation model and SSE with the shrinking core model (SCM). The results showed that HCl concentration and leaching time were directly proportional to the leached titanium concentration. In contrast, the leaching temperature was inversely proportional. The optimum operating conditions were obtained at a temperature of 30 °C, 9 M HCl, and 120 min of leaching time. The shrinking core model is a better representation of the kinetics than RSM with a second-order polynomial equation model. Based on SCM, the rate of the leaching reaction of titanium from low-grade ilmenite is controlled by diffusion through the ash layer.

Abstract

Producing biogas by anaerobic digestion (AD) is a promising process that can simultaneously provide renewable energy and dispose solid waste safely. However, this process could affect environment e.g. due to greenhouse gas emissions. By life cycle assessment (LCA), we assessed the environmental impact (EI) of an integrated fruit waste-based biogas system and its subsystems of Biogas Power Plant Gamping. Data were collected from an actual plant in Gamping, Sleman, Yogyakarta, Indonesia that adopted a wet AD process at mesophilic condition. The results showed that the global warming potential (GWP) emission of the system reached 81.95 kgCO2-eq/t, and the acidification potential (AP), eutrophication potential (EP), human toxicity potential (HTPinf) and fresh water ecotoxicity (FAETPinf) emissions were low. The EI was mainly generated by two subsystems, namely, the electricity generation and the digestate storage. A comparison analysis showed that the GWP become the main contributor of environmental loads produced by Biogas Plant Gamping, Suazhou Biogas Model, Opatokun Biogas Model, Opatokun Pyrolisis Model, dan Opatokun Integrated System Anaerobic Digestion and Pyrolisis. The GWP impact control and reduction could significantly reduce the EI of the system. It has been shown that improving the technology of the process, the electricity generation and the digestate storage will result in the reduction of EI of the biogas system.

Abstract

Merbau (Intsia bijuga) and matoa (Pometia pinnata J.R. Forster & J.G Forster) are two amongst many prominent biomass sources from West Papua, Indonesia. With their versatile characteristics, merbau and matoa wood are used in many industries such as furniture, music instrument, and many other specialty products. However, wood processing industries can emit up to 60% of the residue. In this study, the usage of both merbau and matoa sawdust wastes as solid fuel was studied using response surface methodology (RSM). merbau and matoa sawdust are sieved to get the desired particle size (-20+50 mesh). Two kinds of the sawdust are then mixed in various compositions (70, 50, and 30% merbau). The mixed sawdust is then mixed with varied sticky starch solutions (1, 5, and 10%) to be formed in pellets with various moulding compression force (50, 100, and 150 kg/cm²). The pellets are then analyzed for its characteristics such as ash, moisture contents, and calorific value to be compared with its initial conditions. A full three-level factorial design under RSM was applied to explain the correlation between independent and dependent variables. The results show that statistically, merbau content, binder content, and compressive force showed relatively significant effects on the studied responses (ash content, moisture content, and calorific value). In addition, ANOVA analysis proved that each variable has significant effects on the responses that are confirmed by practically zero P-value. The coefficient of determinations (R²) are all above 0.96 and the normal probability plots confirm that the proposed models adequate the experimental results.
