Abstract

Background. Extraverted individuals are generally characterized by sociability, assertiveness, and active participation in social contexts, which may enhance their involvement in environmental initiatives. However, the extent to which these personality traits translate into sustained environmental engagement is likely influenced by students’ intrinsic motivation toward environmental responsibility. Aims. This study investigates the influence of extraversion personality on students’ engagement in school-based environmental actions, with pro-environmental motivation examined as a mediating mechanism. Methods. A quantitative cross-sectional design was employed using survey data collected from 200 senior high school students enrolled in eco-friendly schools. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to assess both direct and indirect relationships among constructs. Result. The findings indicate that extraversion personality significantly influences pro-environmental motivation and directly affects students’ engagement in environmental actions. Furthermore, pro-environmental motivation significantly mediates the relationship between extraversion and student engagement, highlighting the importance of internal motivational processes in translating personality traits into pro-environmental behavior. Conclusion. These results contribute to the literature on environmental psychology and educational behavior by demonstrating the dual pathway through which personality and motivation interact to promote student participation in sustainability initiatives. Implementation. Practically, the study underscores the importance of fostering intrinsic motivation alongside personality-sensitive strategies to strengthen youth engagement in environmental conservation programs.

Abstract

This article re-organizes empirical data on migrant women’s vulnerability in Jakarta’s SPA industry into the scope of educational evaluation. Rather than treating Population and Environmental Education (PEE) only as demographic and ecological literacy, the study evaluates PEE as a rights-based educational praxis capable of interpreting, preventing, and responding to structural vulnerability. Using a critical qualitative educational-evaluation design, the study examines data generated through semi-structured interviews, limited participant observation, and document analysis involving SPA workers, community actors, NGO and legal-aid advocates, academics, and public officials. The analysis applies four evaluative criteria: relevance, responsiveness, inclusiveness, and transformative utility. The findings indicate that PEE is highly relevant when it is reconstructed as critical urbanization literacy that prepares migrants to understand labor-market exclusion, safe migration, rights, and urban citizenship. It is responsive when environmental education moves beyond behavioral campaigns and evaluates socio-ecological vulnerability, including dense housing, sanitation problems, pollution, flooding, and unequal access to healthy urban space. It becomes inclusive when the voices of stigmatized informal workers are treated as legitimate evidence for educational planning and social protection. Finally, the study proposes ecovocation as a transformative evaluation model that integrates critical consciousness, environmental justice literacy, legal and labor-rights education, safe reporting mechanisms, and non-stigmatizing vocational pathways. The article contributes to educational evaluation by demonstrating how qualitative evidence can be organized into a defensible, triangulated, and utilization-oriented framework for evaluating PEE in contexts of urban inequality.

Abstract

Critical thinking is one of the essential 21st-century skills that should be developed from an early age, particularly in elementary education. However, various studies indicate that elementary students' critical thinking skills remain relatively low, partly due to learning models that do not adequately support their development. This article aims to explore the potential of the Challenge Based Learning (CBL) model in enhancing students' critical thinking skills, considering their cognitive styles: Field Independent (FI) and Field Dependent (FD). The literature review shows that CBL promotes active student engagement in solving real-world challenges, which effectively develops critical thinking aspects such as interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and inference. Additionally, cognitive style influences how students respond to learning: FI students tend to be more independent and analytical, while FD students require more guidance and prefer collaborative work. Therefore, implementing CBL with adjustments based on students' cognitive styles holds significant potential for optimizing the development of critical thinking skills.Kemampuan berpikir kritis merupakan salah satu keterampilan esensial abad ke-21 yang perlu dikembangkan sejak pendidikan dasar. Namun, berbagai studi menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan ini masih tergolong rendah, salah satunya disebabkan oleh penerapan model pembelajaran yang kurang mendukung pengembangan berpikir kritis. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji potensi model Challenge Based Learning (CBL) dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kritis peserta didik, dengan mempertimbangkan gaya kognitif Field Independent (FI) dan Field Dependent (FD). Kajian literatur menunjukkan bahwa CBL mampu mendorong keterlibatan aktif siswa dalam memecahkan tantangan nyata sehingga mengembangkan aspek berpikir kritis seperti interpretasi, analisis, evaluasi, dan inferensi. Selain itu, gaya kognitif memengaruhi cara peserta didik merespons pembelajaran: siswa FI cenderung lebih mandiri dan analitis, sementara siswa FD membutuhkan lebih banyak bimbingan dan bekerja lebih baik dalam kolaborasi. Oleh karena itu, penerapan CBL yang disesuaikan dengan gaya kognitif memiliki potensi besar untuk mengoptimalkan pengembangan kemampuan berpikir kritis.
