Abstract

This study evaluates the lexical density of reading materials in the K13 English textbooks used in Indonesian secondary schools, focusing on the alignment of text complexity with students' cognitive abilities and language proficiency levels. A total of 10 reading texts from both junior and senior high school textbooks were analyzed, covering various genres including narrative, descriptive, expository, and functional texts. Lexical density, defined as the proportion of content words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs) relative to the total word count, was calculated for each text. The results revealed significant variations in lexical density across genres, with descriptive and report texts exhibiting higher complexity, while genres like narratives and procedures showed a more balanced lexical composition. The study found that texts with higher lexical density may be challenging for lower-level learners, while more balanced texts are likely more accessible. These findings suggest that, while some texts are appropriately challenging, others may require adjustments to better cater to students' proficiency levels. The study highlights the importance of revising the K13 English textbooks to enhance their suitability for diverse learners and align more effectively with the goals of the K13 curriculum. The use of lexical density as an objective metric provides valuable insights for improving the readability and overall effectiveness of English language education in Indonesia. This research implies that curriculum designers and textbook authors should consider incorporating a wider range of text complexities to accommodate varying student proficiency levels, ensuring equitable learning opportunities and improved language development outcomes

Abstract

This paper establishes the lexical density and readability levels of the Duolingo guidance textbook, with the view of establishing further the accessibility levels that the textbook has for use in language learning by users. Qualitative content analysis was conducted on 10 segments of the guidance text; lexical density was determined through content word proportions analyzed and readability by the Flesch Reading Ease formula. The results ranged between 47.6% and 56.1% for lexical density, while for nouns, just one word class, the most frequent class of words for all observed segments was 24.9-32.5%. Scores for readability ranged from 53.21 to 85.2. For example, "How to Test Your Best" sections obtained very high readability scores of 85.2, whereas sections more suited to the content, such as "Reading Texts", scored as low as 53.21. Further analysis then showed that there indeed was a strategic range in the section's complexity: the technical content was generally higher in lexical density and low in readability scores, while practical guidance sections maintained higher accessibility. Given this is the conclusion, recommendations go to Duolingo on adding extra scaffolding mechanisms for complex parts by developing supplemental material at different proficiencies, including adaptive learning whereby the complexity of the content would change based on performance. Also, periodic assessment of textual complexity across different versions guarantees that users are uniformly having their experience across the world. The current study added to the cognition of how digital language learning materials balance the issues of accessibility and educational effectiveness

Abstract

This study applies Bhatia's Critical Genre Analysis (CGA) framework to analyze promotional posters from four salad brands—SaladPoint, SaladStop!, Hijoo Salad Bar, and The Roots. It examines how textual, visual, and interactive resources are integrated to communicate brand messages and engage health-conscious audiences effectively. By focusing on genre features like audience targeting, multimodal resources, and interdiscursivity, the study reveals how these strategies align with consumer priorities such as health, convenience, and lifestyle. The analysis shows that the brands use bold typography, vibrant imagery, and strategic calls to action to craft persuasive advertisements. Features like bright colors, fresh ingredients, and friendly language appeal to the health-conscious demographic, promoting a sense of ease and community. Interactive elements such as QR codes and social media handles further enhance consumer engagement. These multimodal strategies work cohesively to convey the brands' ethos and strengthen their appeal. The findings emphasize the importance of Bhatia’s CGA framework in understanding promotional communications, particularly in industries where consumer choices are shaped by perceptions of health, quality, and brand image. Effective advertisements must balance visual, verbal, and interactive elements to resonate with target audiences. This study offers actionable insights for optimizing advertising strategies in the competitive food industry, highlighting the need for cohesive multimodal approaches to boost consumer engagement and brand identity. It also contributes to broader discussions on multimodality and genre in advertising, providing a methodological framework for analyzing promotional materials

Abstract

Thesis hearing invitations are formal academic documents that follow a specific structure and language that reflect institutional norms and adhere to academic communication standards. This study analyzes the rhetorical structure and interpersonal meta-functions in thesis hearing invitations at the University of Sumatera Utara (USU) and how the invitation reflects the professional culture of academic communication. This research uses Critical Genre Analysis (CGA) to explore the structural components and language choices in the invitation, as well as investigate how academic norms are communicated through formal documents. The findings reveal that all thesis hearing invitations consist of four main moves: opening, purpose, content, and closing. However, the number of steps in each move is different. In the invitations, the dominant use of declarative mood emphasizes precise and formal information delivery, typical of academic communication. In addition, the uniformity of the template and the use of formal language according to Indonesian rules emphasize the importance of administrative consistency and professional culture at USU. These practices also reflect a professional culture where clarity, formality, and uniformity are prioritized. Ultimately, this study underscores the value of genre analysis in understanding how genre-specific structures contribute to the effectiveness of academic communication and how they embody institutional values.

Abstract

Online brochures are one of the preferred choices in describing the advertisement’s worth of many linguistic features. ‘Parenting’ strategies are one of the topics which are discussed in the online brochures. We can find the quotes and problem-solving about ‘parenting’ spread in cyberspace. Online parenting brochures are made by a personal or community to share that importance. The clause in parenting brochures discourse has a semantic meaning of its speech function. The language of the brochures was examined by using Halliday’s theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), then it was found that the language in the brochures was formulated interpersonally. The meanings of the clause are developed in any interactive features in exchanging the giving and demanding move of speech function. This research was conducted qualitatively by analyzing 48 clauses in the brochures. It was found that the most commonly used linguistic clause in the brochures was the statement (71%) as a way of giving information to the readers. Then the rest was the command (29%) for the parents or the childminder to be applied in nurturing the children. Besides, multimodal strategies were also used to make the brochures more eye-catching. The semiotics modes used in the brochures were supported by the meaning making of the discourse. The readers were also invited to comprehend the urgent situation of the topic discussed.
