Abstract

Dry and chapped lips occur because the epidermis of the lips lacks a natural moisturizing mechanism, resulting in an increased rate of transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and creating a need for effective lip care products. Roselle flower petals (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) contain anthocyanins, flavonoids, and vitamin C, which have potential antioxidant and moisturizing properties. The physical quality and stability of lip balm are influenced by the wax base, particularly the ratio of candelilla wax to carnauba wax. This study aimed to determine the effect of varying the ratio of candelilla wax to carnauba wax on the physical quality, physical stability, and moisturizing effectiveness of roselle extract lip balm, as well as to determine the optimum formula. This laboratory experimental study used four formulas: F0 (blank), F1 (10%:6%), F2 (8%:8%), and F3 (6%:10%), with 8% roselle extract in F1–F3. Evaluations included organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, spreadability, adhesion, application properties, irritation, and hedonic testing, as well as a six-cycle cycling test and moisturizing effectiveness assessment in 30 panelists over seven days using a skin analyzer. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro–Wilk, paired samples t-test, Friedman, and Wilcoxon tests. All formulas met the physical quality requirements and caused no irritation. F3 showed the best pH stability, while F2 demonstrated the highest moisturizing effect and panelist acceptance. Formula F2 (8%:8%) was determined to be the optimum formula because it provided the best balance of physical quality, stability, moisturizing effectiveness, and panelist acceptance.

Abstract

Indonesia has a tropical climate with high levels of sun exposure, which can cause dry skin. This condition can be addressed with cosmetic products containing moisturizing ingredients, such as flavonoids and antioxidants derived from natural sources. Red onion (Allium ascalonicum L.) peel has potential as a moisturizer because it is rich in flavonoids and antioxidants. The extract was formulated into a clay stick—a practical product that helps remove dead skin cells and is easy to wash off. To assess the impact of red onion peel extract on a clay stick formulation, three extract concentrations—8% (F1), 12% (F2), and 16% (F3)—were formulated. The resulting products were then evaluated for their physical properties, formulation stability, and skin-moisturizing activity. Formulations were evaluated for pH, physical properties, moisture, hedonic profile, and irritation using a cycling test. Extract concentration affected pH, viscosity, and spreadability.. Differences in the concentration of the red onion skin ethanol extract also influenced the moisturizing activity on the skin. Formula III (16% extract) showed the highest moisturizing activity. Extract concentration affected viscosity stability after the cycling test, while all formulations met physical stability and skin moisture requirements.

Abstract

Air pollution is a serious global public health concern that may negatively affect skin health. Red spinach herb (Amaranthus tricolor L.) contains flavonoids and tannins that have potential benefits in maintaining skin moisture. This study aimed to develop a nanoemulsion face mist containing red spinach herb extract and determine the best formulation based on physical quality and skin moisturizing activity. The extract was obtained through maceration using 96% ethanol and formulated into four nanoemulsion face mist preparations: F0 without extract, F1 with 1.5% extract, F2 with 2% extract, and F3 with 2.5% extract. Evaluation parameters included particle size, organoleptic properties, pH, homogeneity, viscosity, spreadability, drying time, irritation test, hedonic acceptability, and skin moisture measurement using a digital skin tester. Data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel and SPSS. Phytochemical screening confirmed the presence of flavonoids and tannins in the extract. All formulations demonstrated good physical quality. Formula F3 showed the highest skin moisture value at 45.5%, compared with F0 (38.6%), F1 (40.2%), and F2 (42.6%). Thus, red spinach herb extract can be formulated into a nanoemulsion face mist, with F3 identified as the optimal formulation.

Abstract

Ultraviolet radiation and exposure to environmental pollution can contribute to premature aging and skin cell damage. Teak leaves (Tectona grandis L.f.) are known to contain secondary metabolites, particularly flavonoids and phenolic compounds, which have the potential to exhibit antioxidant activity. This study aims to develop a loose powder formulation containing teak leaf ethanol extract and to evaluate its physical stability and antioxidant activity. The experimental study was conducted by formulating the extract at concentrations F0 (0%), F1 (15%), F2 (20%), and F3 (25%), followed by evaluations of physical quality, a cycling test, an irritation test, a hedonic test involving 30 panelists, and antioxidant testing using the DPPH method. The extract tested negative for ethanol and heavy metals but tested positive for alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and terpenoids. The extract’s antioxidant activity yielded an IC50 value of 69.02 ppm, which is classified as strong. All formulations met the requirements for physical quality, safety, and stability during the cycling test. The IC50 values for F0, F1, F2, and F3 were 253.75 ppm (weak), 107.90 ppm (moderate), 90.55 ppm (strong), and 75.64 ppm (strong), respectively, while the positive control (product X) was 69.80 ppm (strong). F3 (25%) was the formulation with the best antioxidant activity. The results of this study indicate that teak leaf ethanol extract has the potential to be used as an active ingredient in an antioxidant-active loose powder formulation.

Abstract

Based on a Taylor Nelson Sofres (TNS) survey of 1,800 women aged 20–39 years in five Asian countries, it is known that the average signs of aging in Asian women begin to appear around the age of 25. Dry skin is one of the indicators of premature aging triggered by increased transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Guava leaves (Psidium guajavaL.) contain flavonoids and phenolic compounds which have potential as natural moisturizing active ingredients. This study aims to formulate guava leaf ethanol extract into a body lotion, determine the best formula for skin hydration activity, and evaluate its stability. Laboratory experimental research. The extract was obtained by maceration using 70% ethanol and formulated at a concentration of 6% with three propylene glycol:glycerin ratios, namely F1 (8:10), F2 (8:8), and F3 (10:8), compared with the base (F0) and positive control (K+). Evalua-tions included physical quality, hedonic test, irritation test, accelerated stability test (6-cycle cycling test), and skin hydration test on 30 respondents using a digital skin analyzer. Hydration data were analyzed using the Friedman and Wilcoxon tests. All formulas met the requirements for pH, viscosity, spreadability, and oil-in-water emulsion type, and did not cause irritation. F1 provided the highest moisture increase (19.14%), which was not significantly different from K+ (20.75%; p = 0.304), while F2 (15.27%) and F3 (13.82%) were lower. F2 and F3 were less homo-geneous during testing. Guava leaf ethanol extract has the potential to be used as a natural moisturizing active ingredient in body lotion, with F1 as the optimal formula.
