Abstract

This mixed methods study investigates the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in incorporating local legends into English language instruction in West Kalimantan. Using an explanatory sequential design, the research examined how AI-enhanced culturally relevant materials affect English proficiency and student engagement during a one-month intervention. The study involved 30 students from a high school in Singkawang, divided into experimental and control groups. Quantitative data collection included pre- and post-tests measuring language proficiency and engagement surveys, while qualitative data came from semi-structured interviews and classroom observations. Statistical analysis revealed significant improvement in the experimental group's language proficiency (p < .001, d = 0.85). Thematic analysis identified enhanced cultural connection, improved engagement, and positive technological integration as key factors in student success. The findings suggest that AI-driven integration of local legends enhances language acquisition and cultural awareness while fostering deeper student engagement with learning materials. This research contributes to understanding technology-enhanced culturally responsive pedagogy in language education, with implications for curriculum development and teaching practices in culturally diverse contexts. Future research opportunities include examining longer-term implementation effects and applications across different cultural settings.

Abstract

This study explores the role of AI-powered pronunciation tools in supporting English learners in multilingual classrooms, focusing on 7th-grade students at Pelita Cemerlang School in Pontianak who express a dislike for learning English. The study aims to explore learners’ experiences and perceptions of these tools, particularly how they influence motivation and engagement in pronunciation practice. A qualitative descriptive design was employed, with interviews conducted with a sample of 20 participants to gather in-depth insights. The findings suggest that AI-powered pronunciation tools provide personalized feedback that helps students identify and correct pronunciation errors, making the learning process more interactive and engaging. For instance, students reported noticeable improvements in their ability to produce challenging sounds and patterns. However, the tools were found to be most effective when complemented by traditional teacher-led instruction. The study concludes that AI-driven technologies can play a valuable role in pronunciation practice for students with low motivation, though their integration into the classroom should consider diverse learner needs and preferences.

Abstract

Based on the initial observation, many Senior High School students are lack of motivation in reading English texts. One of the reasons is because the students do not understand the vocabulary use in the text, parcularly when the text a bit long. This study aims to improve students' reading comprehension skills through the Look and Say method. This study uses the Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach consisting of four stages: planning, implementing, observation, and reflection. Participants in this study were grade XII students of SMA N 5 Purworejo. The subjects of this study were twelfth-grade students which consisted of 35 students, 10 of them are male and 15 students are female. Data were collected through observation and tests, then analyzed using descriptive analysis techniques. The results showed a significant increase in students' reading skills after the application of the Look and Say method. The increase was seen from the pre-cycle stage to cycle 1, and from cycle 1 to cycle 2. The average score increased from 63.52 in the pre-cycle, to 68.28 in cycle 1, and 71.42 in cycle 2. This indicates that the Look and Say method is effective in improving students' reading skills.

Abstract

This study aimed to get a clear description of how positive interdependence and promotive interaction as two of five key elements in cooperative learning account for the success of students’ achievement in essay writing. A mixed method design was employed to describe if the characteristics of both positive interdependence and promotive interaction were found in the activities performed by the groups and whether these two elements had the potential to support students’ achievement in essay writing. Using Google Classroom as the learning management system to mediate the learning process, there were 52 undergraduate students participated in this study who were divided into 10 small groups consisting of 5-6 students. Data required for this study was collected from both written records of students’ activities in online discussions and the scores achieved by the groups on each task. The findings showed an interesting fact that the characteristics of both of the elements were easily found in all parts of the activities performed by all groups in the online discussions. However, the average scores of their works indicated that there was not any meaningful improvement from the first to the last activities. The result implied that although cooperative learning is possible to be applied in an online classroom setting, it needs proper preparation and well-designed writing tasks to make it possible to support students’ writing achievement.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the students' writing ability by analyzing the student's analytical exposition text through qualitative research. The research subjects in this study consist of 30 eleventh-grade students from SMAN 1 Sungai Raya. The researchers employ 6-traits of writing rubrics to examine the students’ works. The findings mainly focus on two pivotal aspects, which are the development of students' ideas and organization and their proficiency in students' written conventions. The analysis shows that the majority of the students are able to write a simple and clear main idea. The researcher found that most of the students use multiple details or reasons to support the main idea. They are capable of constructing the analytical exposition text, which elaborates ideas, supports, and details the language features and generic structure of the text, and the writing convention. Based on the analysis of conventions in students’ writing, the students demonstrate varied levels of competence in writing conventions, showing strengths in some areas like punctuation and grammar but facing challenges, particularly in spelling and specific aspects of capitalization. In conclusion, they have good basic writing skills but need practice and exposure to writing English.

Abstract

This research analyzes the effectiveness of the group inquiry learning model based on religious character values in enhancing narrative writing skills, specifically in the form of diaries. The objective is to evaluate how this model integrates Islamic religious education with literacy culture while fostering religious character values in the learning process. Employing a quasi-experimental method with a matching-only pretest-posttest control group design, the study was conducted with 76 eighth-grade students from Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri in Magelang City, Central Java, Indonesia. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and tests assessing narrative writing that incorporated religious character values such as siddiq, amanah, tabligh, and fathanah. The results revealed that the experimental group, which used the group inquiry model, showed significant improvements in writing skills (t-count = 3.081, sig. = 0.018). The N-Gain for the experimental group was 22.33, compared to 0.52 for the control group, demonstrating the model’s effectiveness. This research underscores the importance of integrating group inquiry learning with religious character values, as it significantly improves narrative writing skills, enhances student engagement, and instills core Islamic values, thereby contributing to the development of both literacy and character education in Islamic schools.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the politeness strategies used by students when communicating with a lecturer via WhatsApp messages. The researcher conducted this study using discourse analysis, with data obtained from 22 final-year students of the English Education Study Program at Universitas Tanjungpura Pontianak, in the form of screenshot messages. The messages were analyzed using referential analysis to examine each utterance. Based on the findings, the students mostly used a combination of positive politeness strategies and negative politeness strategies when messaging a lecturer. Each strategy served its own function; for example, positive politeness strategies were mostly found at the beginning of the message as a form of greeting, while negative politeness strategies were used to indirectly convey intentions and to soften requests. The results of the analysis showed that most students applied politeness strategies appropriately based on the context when communicating with the lecturer, but some still inappropriately used certain words and terms in their messages. Therefore, it is necessary for students to be more aware of appropriate language use, especially in written communication, in order to maintain effective communication and foster a good relationship with the lecturer.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the implementation of family-based principles in the traditional market management in Yogyakarta. This research is qualitative research employing a case study approach. Data collection methods were interviews and questionnaires. The research subjects consisted of Traditional Market Traders, Market Heads, and five Indonesian Association of Market Traders including Beringharjo, Sleman, Piyungan, Wates, and Wonosari Market.  The results of this research show that the family-based principles are applied in the management of these traditional markets. Based on the interview results and questionnaires, traditional market traders, market heads, and traders’ associations have a strong relationship both structurally and formally as well as culturally and informally. Communication between the three research subjects was established effectively by performing deliberations in policy making. Informal relationships include recitals, joint gymnastics, and cooperation. This study reveals that the value of deliberations is high which reaches 72%; a sense of family is 85.5%; Gotong-royong activity reaches 82%; family value reaches 83%; cultural value is 86%; and confidence level is 81%. This impacts the existence of Yogyakarta's traditional markets which still survive and even become tourist landmarks. This research has limitation on its depth and method usage, so future research needs to be deepened with other methods.
