Abstract

Project-based learning, which has been widely claimed to be helping students build skills needed in the 21st century, has been implemented in various teaching and learning contexts, including in higher education settings. This research was intended to explore how Project-based Learning (PBL) was implemented in a university setting from both students' and lecturers' perspectives in an Indonesian University. This qualitative research involved 17 students who participated in various projects while taking university courses and two lecturers who taught using PBL. The data were gathered from students' written reflections and lecturers' interviews. Teachers' semester plans were analyzed to triangulate the data. The obtained data were analyzed thematically based on emerging themes. The findings show that both students and lecturers consider PBL to be beneficial in strengthening the development of 21st century skills. In particular, the students consider PBL to offer them some benefits, such as improving their critical thinking skills, promoting creativity, fostering collaboration, and expanding their knowledge. Despite its usefulness, PBL has some constraints that are time-consuming and provoke tensions among group members as they have different ideas to work on the project. In contrast to the students' perspectives, the lecturers have slightly different views on PBL. The lecturers consider PBL as a good teaching approach, yet monitoring students' progress and assessing the product were two challenges, especially during the pandemic time.

Abstract

EFL Pre-Service Teachers’ Experiences in Implementing Differentiated Instruction during Teaching Practice Program.  This study explores the experiences of pre-service English teachers (PETs) in implementing Differentiated Instruction (DI) during their teaching practice in Indonesian junior and senior high schools. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected from 17 PETs who had completed their teaching practice, focusing on how they differentiated content, process, product, and the learning environment to meet diverse student needs. The findings reveal that PETs employed strategies such as scaffolding, flexible grouping, and offering multiple forms of assessment to address the range of linguistic competencies and learning styles among students. However, they also faced challenges, including time management, balancing diverse needs, student resistance to flexible grouping, assessing different products, limited resources, and maintaining student engagement. Despite these obstacles, PETs viewed DI as a valuable approach that enhanced their teaching effectiveness, though they recognized the need for more training and resources to implement it successfully. This study provides insights into the challenges and benefits of DI in pre-service teacher education, particularly within Indonesia’s Merdeka Curriculum. The implications suggest that teacher education programs should integrate more extensive DI training to better equip future teachers for diverse classroom dynamics. Limitations include the small sample size and focus on a specific context, which may limit generalizability. Future research should explore DI across different regions and school settings with larger samples. Keywords: differentiated instruction, pre-service teachers, ELT, teaching practice.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v14.i2.202490

Abstract

AbstractGay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) in Indonesia from the perspective of human rights, Islam, and Pancasila. Research is qualitative using the method of literature study (library research). LGBT based on a religious point of view, especially Islam and Pancasila are declared forbidden and contrary culture. But, the state is in ambiguity in determining policy. The State of Indonesia faces a dilemma between Pancasila and Islam with the consistency and spirit of human rights enforcement in Indonesia since the Reformation Era. This manifestation of ambiguity appears to be the lack of clear regulation of LGBT. This gives rise to discriminatory attitudes towards LGBT people both psychologically, physically socially, culturally, and economically. This study recommends that the state should take a bold stance in determining the point of view of LGBT. LGBT citizens should still be treated equally. The absence of regulation against LGBT is a manifestation of discrimination by the state. The state should give its perspective on LGBT in Indonesia.
