Abstract

Mass media play a crucial role in shaping public opinion and framing social reality through discourse construction. In online news reporting, the choice of words, text structure, and journalistic perspective significantly influence how events are perceived by the public. This study aims to analyze the critical discourse in the Tribun Medan news article titled “Viral Pesta Pernikahan Batak Batal Akibat Pengantin Wanita Kabur Pihak Sihombing Tuntut Ganti Rugi” using Teun A. Van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) model. This research employs a qualitative method with data collected through documentation of the news text published on July 11, 2023, supported by relevant literature. The data were analyzed using the three dimensions of Van Dijk’s CDA: text structure (macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure), social cognition, and social context. The results reveal that the news is not neutral but is constructed through linguistic choices, textual organization, and rhetorical strategies that emphasize the financial and social pressures experienced by the groom’s family. The analysis of social cognition shows that the journalist’s ideology, values, and personal experiences influence the framing of the event. Meanwhile, the social context analysis highlights power dynamics within Batak customary traditions, particularly regarding the rights and position of the male party in customary marriages, as represented by the highlighted demand for compensation in the news. This study contributes to CDA scholarship on local cultural reporting and offers a critical perspective on how media construct social realities..

Abstract

Efficacy is teachers’ ability to strengthen their self-motivation to help solve learning problems faced by their students. In the learning process, psychopragmatic mastery is expected to strengthen the psychological condition of teachers and students through informative, manipulative, and persuasive sentences so that each student can optimize learning tools to help them achieve learning goals. During the pandemic, it is important to examine teachers’ self-efficacy and psychopragmatics mastery to support students in addressing their online learning difficulties. A qualitative study to investigate these issues was therefore conducted. Participants of this study were teachers from all over Indonesia, consisting of 350 middle and high school teachers. Data were collected through (1) a survey of teacher efficacy during online learning, (2) observations of the forms of efficacy built by the teachers during learning activities and outside the classroom, (3) interviews with the teachers to identify forms of efficacy used to shape students' learning fundamentals. It was found that the teachers tended to increase their efficacy through strong lesson planning. In addition, they often modified learning tools so that the multimedia used could foster enthusiasm and learning motivation for both themselves and the students. The teacher's efficacy in teaching is the key to analysis in psychopragmatic studies because data in the form of snippets of teacher speech can influence student motivation. Psychopragmatics in the teaching and learning process is not only considered the psychology of language that is practiced in learning the Indonesian language, but teachers also have internalized psychological reinforcement in the learning activity that has been planned, implemented, and assessed.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze students’ perceptions of scientific writing learning within an advanced and innovative learning framework. The research employed a descriptive quantitative approach using a Likert-scale questionnaire completed by 202 students. The data were analyzed descriptively to obtain the mean, standard deviation, and percentage distribution across five main aspects: participation and interaction, clarity of materials and use of examples, feedback and collaborative guidance, development of academic skills, and time management and variation in innovative learning methods. The results indicate that all aspects achieved mean scores above 3.00 (on a 1–4 scale), which are categorized as high. The highest scores were obtained for teaching method variation (3.14) and material implementation support (3.14), while the lowest score was found in learning time allocation (3.06). Although the majority of students selected the “Agree” category, the proportion of “Strongly Agree” responses remained relatively low (13–17%), suggesting the need for improvement in time allocation, feedback quality, and diversity of examples provided. This study underscores the importance of interactive learning design, consistent use of formative feedback, and the implementation of innovative learning methods to enhance the quality of students’ learning experiences. These findings can serve as a reference for teachers and schools in designing more effective and sustainable scientific writing instruction strategies.

Abstract

The Lauje language, spoken by communities in Parigi Moutong Regency, Central Sulawesi, reflects a rich cultural and social identity, yet faces the threat of extinction due to the dominance of Indonesian and the impact of globalization. This study aims to explore the forms, functions, and strategies of directive speech acts in the Lauje language, which remain largely undocumented in linguistic research. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed to achieve this goal. Data was collected through field observation, audio recording of natural conversations, and interviews with native speakers in Moubang Village, a culturally representative Lauje-speaking area. Data collection techniques included eavesdropping, recording, and note-taking, while the analysis involved data reduction, categorization, interpretation, and validation using source and theoretical triangulation. The findings reveal six distinct forms of directive speech acts —commanding, ordering, requesting, asking, suggesting, and advising —each with specific social functions and realized through both direct and indirect strategies. These patterns reflect the speaker's sensitivity to social context, hierarchy, and politeness norms. The study concludes that directive speech acts in Lauje serve not only communicative purposes but also preserve the community's cultural values and relational dynamics. The research contributes to pragmatic studies of regional languages and supports efforts to document and revitalize endangered linguistic heritage in Indonesia.
