Abstract

Hyperglycemia can lead to increased free radicals formation that can potentially cause oxidative stress as a trigger for male reproductive organ damage, damaging the histological structure of seminiferous tubules as a place for sperm cell formation. Flavonoids in breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) are known to be able to counteract free radicals caused by diabetes. The research was conducted to observe the effect of breadfruit leaf extract on the histological features of seminiferous tubules in diabetic Wistar rats. This true-experimental research with post-test-only control group design and purposive sampling technique to obtain 30 Wistar white male rats 8-12 weeks old weighing 150-200 g were grouped into 5 groups. The negative control group was fed standard food; the positive control was induced with STZ, and treatments 1, 2, and 3 were given the extract at doses of 200 mg/kgBW, 400 mg/kgBW, and 800 mg/kgBW consecutively for 30 days. Assessment of spermatogenesis in the histology of seminiferous tubule using Johnsen score criteria. Data were analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis and the Mann-Whitney U posthoc test, which revealed significance with a p-value of <0.001 (<0.05). This study showed that breadfruit leaf extract can improve the histology of seminiferous tubules. Despite not being as good as the histology of seminiferous tubules under normal conditions, it has a therapeutic effect.

Abstract

Highlights: Visceral adipose tissue demonstrated a positive and significant correlation with the LDL-C to HDL-C ratio, with the majority of participants exhibiting elevated VAT levels also showing high LDL-C to HDL-C ratios. An increase in BMI tended to correspond with a rise in the lipid ratio.   Abstract Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) continue to be a leading cause of death worldwide. In Indonesia, factors contributing to CVDs, including obesity and abnormal lipid profiles, have been increasingly prevalent among adults. The low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C)-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio is a well-established indicator used to assess the risk of CVD. This study examined how nutritional factors, particularly body mass index (BMI) and visceral adipose tissue (VAT), influence the LDL-C-to-HDL-C ratio in adults. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study comprising laboratory medical check-up results from employees of Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jakarta, Jakarta, Indonesia. The bivariate analysis was conducted using logistic regression (significant at p<0.05). The data were analyzed statistically using the International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 27.0. Results: Among 56 participants (n=56), BMI was categorized as obese (48.2%), overweight (5.4%), and normal weight (46.4%), while VAT was categorized as high (69.6%), increased (21.4%), and normal level (8.9%). The analysis showed a positive but not significant association between BMI and the LDL-C-to-HDL-C ratio (Odds Ratio/OR=1.230; 95% Confidence Interval/CI=1.706-2.143; p=0.464). In contrast, there was a positive and significant relationship between VAT and the LDL-C-to-HDL-C ratio (OR=3.918; 95% CI=1.143-13.430; p=0.030). Conclusion: This study revealed a significant relationship between VAT and the LDL-C-to-HDL-C ratio, whereas no notable link was observed between BMI and the LDL-C-to-HDL-C ratio among the employees.

Abstract

Cognitive development and intelligence of children are shaped by multifactorial influences, including genetic predisposition, environmental conditions, nutritional status, cognitive stimulation, educational exposure, and overall health status. The average Intelligence Quotient (IQ) of the Indonesian population is 89.96, which is categorized within the average range at the global level. A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted involving 80 school-aged children selected through simple random sampling. IQ was measured using the CFIT administered by child psychologists, while nutritional status was assessed using the WHO BMI-for-age reference. Logistic regression modeling was used to identify significant determinants, followed by ROC curve analysis, Youden Index calculation, and risk score estimation, which was derived from the ratio of each significant predictor to the smallest significant coefficient. Significant associations were observed for screen time (PR = 5.23; 95% CI: 1.49–18.29), history of pneumonia (PR = 3.92; 95% CI: 1.13–13.68), and poor nutritional status (PR = 4.03; 95% CI: 1.34–12.11). The predictive model showed an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.794, with a youden index-derived cut-off of  ≥ 2 (95% CI: 0.630–0.882), indicating a threshold for increased risk of low cognitive function among children. Screen time, a history of pneumonia, and poor nutritional status were identified as key predictors of lower cognitive function, with a risk score of ≥ 2 as the threshold. Parental control over digital exposure and the reinforcement of preventive health behaviors are essential components in improving children’s cognitive outcomes.
