Abstract

The aims of this study were to describe the kinds of  Conversational Implicarture, to explain the ways of performing implicature  and to describe the contex of implicature by Arsy And Arsya in Youtube channel. This research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive design. The data were the utterences of  Arsy and Arsya in Youtube Channel. The data analyzes by using theory of conversational implicature.the result of this study were 1) the kinds of conversational implicatures used by Arsy and Arsya  found in the text, they are Qualitative Maxim, Quantitative Maxim, Relevant Maxim, and Mannner Maxim. The analysis has found that Quantitative appeares in Arsy and Arsya YouTube Channel. (2)The process of conversational implicatures used by Arsy and Arsya in Wonderland YouTube Channel is realized through politeness strategies. (3) The reasons of the realization of conversational implicatures used by Arsy and Arsya in Wonderland YouTube Channel is realized through the system of tenor formed as [unequal/informal/positive/frequent]. It is found that there are are four. They are involved Bald on Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, and Off the Record. Off the record is the higher result found. Since she give codes to the hearer to get what her intentions, and it sometimes coded by gesture. . While in Arsya’s utterances, the types of politeness implicatures found are three. They are involved Bald on Record,Positive Politeness, and Off the Record. Off the record is the higher result found. Abstract

This study deals with the realizations of violation maxims of main characters in Keluarga Beti comedy series. The objectives of the study were to describe realization of violation maxims used by main characters in Keluarga Beti comedy series. This research was conducted by qualitative design. The data were sentences of main characters which were violated. The data source of this research was taken from Keluarga Beti comedy series that was obtained from the video on YouTube. The finding of the data showed eleven realizations of violation maxim of main characters in Keluarga Beti comedy series as understating, overstating, using tautologies, contradiction, using irony, give hints, give association clues, be ambiguous, overgeneralize, and overstating and be ambiguous. The most dominant realization of violation maxim was being ambiguous. The less dominant realized of main characters in Keluarga Beti comedy series were understating and give association clues. The absence of the realizations of main characters in Keluarga Beti comedy series were metaphor, presuppose, and be vague. The researcher also found other realizations were unrelated statement and combination of overstating and be ambiguous. Keywords:Violation Maxims, Main Characters, Comedy, Keluarga Beti Comedy Series.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to find out the kinds of figures of speech in surah Ar-Rahman, and to investigate realization of figures of speech in surah Ar-Rahman. The research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive design. The data of this study were 78 verses of surah Ar –Rahman. Besides, Miles, Huberman’s, and Saldana’s analysis applied in this study. In addition, Keraf theory (2004) was used in this study to find out kinds of figures of speech in surah Ar-Rahman, and Arp and Perrine theory (1963) was applied to investigate realization of figures of speech in surah Ar-rahman. The results of this study were (1) There were 10 kinds figures of speech in surah Ar-Rahman namely 3 Simile 2 Personifications 1 Apophasis 31 Repetition 2 Paralellism 1 Apostrophe  2 Pleonasm 1 Prolepsis 1 Antonomasia 1 Tautology (2) In realization figures of speech in surah Ar-rahman . ways in figures of speech in surah Ar-Rahman namely explicitly, comparing things, noun, repetition, synonym, denial, redundancy, substitution, and future. Abstract

The research deals with idioms translation strategies. The aims of this study were: (1) to investigate the strategies of translating idioms in Pasung Jiwa novel, (2) to analyze the  process of translation strategies applied in Pasung Jiwa novel, and (3) to describe how the context of idiom translation strategies applied in translating Pasung Jiwa novel. The research was conducted by using qualitative design. The data of this study were words, phrases and clause. The data were collected through documentary technique and the instrument was the documentary sheet. The data were analyzed by using Miles and Huberman’s Interactive Model. The result of this study revealed that: (1) The kinds of idioms translation strategies in Pasung Jiwa Novel found by the researcher namely (a) idiom of similar meaning aand form, (b) idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form, (c) translating idiom by paraphrase, (d) translating idiom by omission and (e) description strategy. (2) There are four process of idiom translation strategies based on sequences, namely (single process, double process, triple process  and quadruple process) in this study, the most dominant type was single process. triple and quadruple process was not found in this research. (3) From four types of context in translation proposed by Nida (2001), in this study the dominant context was social cultural context. Meanwhile, paralinguistic context and style context were not found. Therefore, in translating idiom, the translators need to know SL/TL culture and its relations to all aspects of cultural background and literature heritage of both languages in translation. The translator wanted the English translated version of Pasung Jiwa Novel easy to understand by the global reader. Abstract

The objective of this study is to explain the reason of flouting maxim used by governor candidates of North Sumatera in election debate 2018.  The research methodology used in the research is qualitative research design.The data were analyzed by using interactive model of qualitative data management and analysis namely data collection, data condensation, data display and verification and conlusion. The findings of this study revealed that the reasons reason for flouting maxim because the candidates gave implicitly response to hearer in their response. Each candidate gave the implied meaning in their response because candidates knew that they were as a rival in this debate in order to get a chance as a Governor in North Sumatera.Keywords: Debate, Governor Candidates, Flouting Maxim.

Abstract

This study presents a research conducted of Experiential Function in Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s speech at the Asia Pacific Regional Conference of Open Government Partnership (OGP) which were hold in Nusa Dua Bali. The main objective to find the dominant pattens of representation of experience formed by transitivity (process, participant and circumtance) and to describe of situational contexts (arena, participant’s characteristics and semantic domain). It presented a qualitative design dealing with quantifiable (numeric) mode. The source of the data was taken from the opening speech of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on May 6, 2014. The data were collected by applying documentary technique. The data analysis found out the findings that there were five types of process from six types of process based on systemic functional linguistics which was found in the speech. The patterns of each processes were different from others, namely material patterns, mental, relational; identification, attribution, possession, verbal and exsistential. The context of situation of the speech affected by field and dominated by arena or social activity refers to the location where social activities were performed, especially [+institutionalized]. Abstract

This article aims to investigate the linguistics characteristics of male and female students with different cultures in using language in boarding house. The method of the study is descriptive qualitative research. Qualitative research focuses on understanding social phenomena and providing rich verbal descriptions of setting, situations, and participants. It means the data are in the form of words and sentences. The data is taken from 4 males and 4 females students who live in boarding house. The sample of this research will be taken through random sampling technique. This research has indeed revealed a unique gender differences between Bataknese and Karonese students. The results of this study find out that there are no consistent characteristics of male and female students with different cultures in using the language in boarding house. Male use the female’s linguistic characteristics, such as: declaration with interrogative intonation, tag question, emotional reference and high of politeness, vice versa, female uses the male’s linguistic characteristics, such as: direct, judgement adjectives, less of politeness and brief sentences. Indeed, this study find out that Bataknese female students are more dominant use male’s linguistic characteristics.Keywords:gender, linguistic characteristics, language use , culture, utterances

Abstract

It is very common to acknowledge that in order to achieve a good communication, discourse markers are needed as one of a tool to perform in linking the ideas to ideas, especially in spoken language, it’s really helpful in guiding the speakers and listeners to comprehend what is being discussed or talked. There are several studies has been discussed about what discourse markers are especially in spoken language, but in this research, the realization of discourse markers is the aim of the study. The data source of this research were students in Harford Institute Sekip Branch, there were 16 students taken from 4 different levels and they were taken by using purposive sampling. The data were the words from their utterances which contains of discourse markers which were collected by using audio recorder. And the research was done by applying descriptive qualitative method. The result revealed that there are 3 realizations based on the position found in Discourse Markers, they are at the boundary (Initial), after the first word (Middle) and later (Final), where initial discourse markers appeared as the most dominant one. It is proved that the discourse marker realized in the Initial position to signal upcoming information, since discourse markers has the essential function to connect or link ideas to the ideas or even as a pause in the speech. Keywords: Discourse Markers, Students Interactions, NonformalEducation

Abstract

The objectives of this qualitative research were (1) to identify the factors that affect the Minangkabau language (ML) maintenance in Medan, (2) to discover the parents’ efforts in maintaining ML in Medan and (3) to find out the reason why the speakers have to maintain ML. The souree of data is the nembers of the Association of Sei Jaring Community (Ikatan Warga Sei Jaring: IWS) in Medan. The sample was 10 families including 10 parents and their children. The instruments of this study are a questionnaire and an interview. The questionnaire was used to answer the factors affected the maintenance of ML and how factors affected the maintenance of ML. The interview was used to discover the influence why Minangkabau’s people have to maintain ML. There are four factors in ML maintenance, the parents’ role, the role of family, the intramarriage and homeland visits. After distributing questionnaire and did some interviews it is found that IWS especially for the third generation (children) has the danger level in ML when they communicate to each other. Meanwhile, the data analysis also shows that both fathers and mothers communicate to each other with ML. This condition occurred because of the influence of the environment. Parents have to keep communication and teaching Minangkabau language continuously to their children. so, the young generation can keep the existence of ML for their future. Abstract

The objectives of the study was To find out to what extent does the design of story book in English match the preschoolers’ language development, to find out how story book in English designed to cope with the Pre-schoolers, to find out the reason why  story book in English designed as it was for pre-Schoolers. The study was research and development. The existing story book was Moo’s Smelly Jumper from David Brown. There were several uncommon words, and the book was not intended in indicators K-13 Curricullum.  The researcher wanted to develop a new story book in English for Preschoolers in Medan based on the position of EFL in Indonesia and the preschoolers’ language development in English. The story book was about my pets and me. The researcher develop 6 of pets, cat, rabbit, fish, bird, dog, and rooster. The researcher create the uncommon words to be common word to the preschoolers by presenting the explanation of picture of the object, and the function of the object. the story book was intended to the indicator in K-13 Curricullum. The findings of the study showed that (1)  The findings of the existing story book the total score in general were ”2” (the criteria was partially met). And then, preschoolers’ language development, namely 80% matched with Slobin’s theory in Semantic, 76% in Grammatic and 72% preschoolers in Phonology. (2). Based on the validation of the book by the experts, the book got some the revision in the content and in the layout. Finally the book would be : The content : Included the learning outcome, the text was intended to achieve the indicator of K-13 curricullum, namely preschoolers are able to love the pets such as rabbit, cat, dog, birds, and roooster. The layout : the size of page number was not too big, the background was colorfull to attrack The preschoolers’ attention. The series book of “Gunggung is my Dog, Brave Rooster, Miaw the Cheerfull cat, Bird’s sad whistle, and Missing Fish  ” had been design to achieved the standard competence which was written in syllabus kemendikbud no 37, “the preschoolers can love the God’s living things” where the theme was “Pets” in the first semester.  Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the book was appropriate for Preschoolers in Medan. some suggestion were directed to To teacher of Preschool in Medan supposed giving more attention to the preschoolers’ language development in Medan in doing story telling by using a story book in English, to other researcher, it was suggested that this reseach could be further expanded, elaborated, and explored in other field in ordet to contribute the development, especially in story book, and to all the readers, it was suggested to use this research as the reference for other research in educational research and Development.Keywords : develop, story book, PreSchoolers,
