Abstract

Oil contamination presents a major challenge to wastewater treatment systems due to its detrimental effects. This research explores the effectiveness of activated carbon derived from tamarind fruit shells as an adsorbent for removing oil from wastewater. The activated carbon was prepared using three different chemical agents: phosphoric acid, zinc chloride, and sodium hydroxide. Characterization of the resulting carbon materials was performed using XRD, FTIR, SEM, and BET analysis. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to evaluate the influence of initial oil concentration, adsorbent dosage, contact time, temperature, and pH. The BET specific surface area, pore size and total pore volume for the optimum adsorption capacity of activated carbon using H3PO4 are obtained at 617.59 m2.g-1, 37.14 cm3.g-1 and 0.812 g.g-1, respectively. Optimal adsorption occurred at an oil concentration of 5000 mg.L-1, a dosage of 1 g.L-1, a contact time of 60 minutes, a temperature of 60°C, and neutral pH (7). Across all activating agents, the Langmuir isotherm best described the adsorption equilibrium, while adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model. Among the samples, activated carbon treated with H3PO4 demonstrated the highest adsorption capacity (1070 mg.g-1), followed by ZnCl2 (879 mg.g-1), and NaOH (643 mg.g-1). These results indicate that tamarind shell-derived activated carbon is a cost-effective and efficient solution for oil removal in wastewater treatment applications.

Abstract

Indonesia is the global leader in palm oil production, but it deals with significant challenges in managing palm oil mill waste, particularly palm kernel shells (PKS). This study investigated palm kernel shell (PKS) as a precursor for synthesizing magnetic activated carbon (MAC) to enhance its performance as an adsorbent for liquid waste treatment.  The precursor was delignified using alkali liquor and magnetized by incorporating Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺ ions, followed by chemical activation (ZnCl₂) through an intermediate pyrolysis process. The performances of delignified and non-delignified MAC (DMAC and NDMAC) were evaluated through methylene blue adsorption tests (25–45 mg/L), focusing on adsorption capacity, dye removal efficiency, as well as isotherm and kinetic analysis. DMAC demonstrated a larger surface area, leading to enhanced adsorption performance. Morphological analysis revealed that delignification had a positive influence on the pore structure and size, resulting in a more uniform distribution. DMAC exhibited an adsorption capacity 16.3% higher (35.3 mg/g) in the equilibrium phase and 16.6% higher at maximum adsorption capacity (50.25 mg/g) according to the Langmuir isotherm. Furthermore, the inclusion of iron ions (Fe2+/Fe3+) promoted pore expansion and formation in the precursor material. The study found the Langmuir isotherm model (R² = 0.999) to be the best fit for methylene blue adsorption, while the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R² = 0.9958) demonstrated an excellent fit for adsorption kinetics. The findings confirm that DMAC and NDMAC derived from PKS are effective for methylene blue dye adsorption, technically.

Abstract

Increasing agricultural productivity is a key focus in supporting food security and the welfare of farmers.  One of the challenges in managing agricultural land in Bendung Village is the unpredictable availability of water and the reliance on traditional irrigation methods.  This often hampers the optimization of agricultural yields. This community service aims to apply an appropriate technology in the form of a sprinkler irrigation system as an innovative solution to improve the efficiency of irrigating agricultural land in Bendung Village. The sprinkler system used is supported by a renewable energy source in the form of a Solar Power Plant (PLTS), so that it is more environmentally friendly and sustainable. The methods used included socialization and training of farmers regarding the use and maintenance of sprinkler systems, as well as monitoring the impact of the application of this technology on crop productivity. The evaluation results showed a significant improvement in water usage and time efficiency. The irrigation process using the old system took about 2-3 hours of watering labor on a 600 m2 field, while using sprinklers, farmers only need about 30 minutes. The implementation of the sprinkler system not only reduces operational costs but also makes water use more efficient and lowers total costs significantly. With a total water saving of about 41.6%, this technology provides long-term financial benefits to farmers in Bendung Village. Additionally, the system's relatively easy maintenance also adds value to the farm's sustainability and efficiency. This renewable energy-based sprinkler system can be a model for effective and sustainable irrigation solutions for other agricultural areas

Abstract

In Indonesia, the Independent Curriculum (Kurikulum Merdeka) was introduced as a response to challenges, but its successful implementation depends heavily on its integration with a deep learning approach. This study aims to analyze the relationship between epistemology, pedagogy, and deep learning in the Independent Curriculum through a philosophically based literature review. The analysis shows that epistemology serves as a conceptual foundation that determines perspectives on the nature of knowledge, pedagogy serves as an implementation bridge that translates philosophical foundations into learning strategies, while deep learning is the ultimate goal of conceptual understanding, critical reflection, interconceptual relationships, and the application of knowledge in real contexts. Thus, deep learning is an epistemological and pedagogical transformation that contributes to the formation of reflective, critical, and character-based students in facing the dynamics of 21st-century life.

Abstract

Operating room scheduling is a complex process that involves various resources and takes the interests of many parties into consideration. The genetic algorithm is the frequently used metaheuristic algorithm to solve a large-size operating room scheduling problem. Many techniques have been developed to improve the genetic algorithms' performance in dealing with the operating room scheduling complexity. In this paper, we survey available literature to identify improvement techniques used at each stage of the genetic algorithm and capture the underlying problems. This review provides a mapping of improvement techniques in genetic algorithms correlating with the considered problems. The results can be employed by other researchers as a guide for future research in integrating a genetic algorithm or other population-based metaheuristic algorithm with a recent heuristic algorithm following the future directions of operating room scheduling research.
