Screening for worms is carried out by examining fecal preparations. This activity also aims to check visual acuity in elementary students and make references for sharp vision correction to learn well. Visual acuity checks were carried out using a Snellen card. The results of the examination showed that 3/143 students had worms and 3/273 students had visual disturbances. Students with worms are recommended to go to the Puskesmas to be given deworming medicine, and students with visual impairments are facilitated for examination by an ophthalmologist and given glasses if needed.

Abstract

Various pesticides are widely used in households to control animals and pests. Pesticides consist of chemicals known to be harmful to health, so their use must be regulated in a certain way to avoid acute and chronic toxicity to humans. The purpose of this activity is to conduct a survey regarding the knowledge and behavior of a community in Nagari Panasahan, Painan, regarding the use of pesticides and their impact on health and to conduct education on how to properly use pesticides. Assessment of participant knowledge and behavior regarding pesticide use was carried out using a questionnaire with 28 questions. A total of 35 participants took part in the educational program. The questionnaire response analysis showed that most of the participants were housewives, had a primary-secondary education, had limited income, used more than one type of pesticide to control nuisance animals, and had limited knowledge about the chronic toxicity pesticides and about how to protect health. Environmental health experts provide educational materials on pesticides, their effects on health and prevention efforts, followed by interactive discussions. Further evaluation is needed to determine whether the program is successful in modifying pesticide use in this community.

Abstract

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a case that spread to many countries, including Indonesia, due to of SARS-CoV-2 transmission. West Sumatra, especially Padang city, is one of the highest spread of COVID-19 cases in Indonesia. This study aimed to examine the relation between Ct value and absolute lymphocyte count with the severity of COVID-19. The type of this research was analytic observational with the cross sectional study. We collected 106 patients data in Dr. M. Djamil Padang hospital from moderate to critical severity from June-August 2021. The data were collected and processed using convenient sampling which was then tested using Spearman correlation, One Way ANOVA, and Kruskal-Wallis tests. The results showed that most patients with confirmed COVID-19 were at the age of 56 to 65 years (30.2%), were women (51.9%), and had hypertension comorbidity (27.6%). We found that the median (IQR) of the Ct value is 23.5(10) and the mean ± SD of absolute lymphocyte count is 1213±56. There was a relation between Ct value and severity of COVID-19 (p=0.019), absolute lymphocyte count and severity of COVID-19 (p<0.01), and weak negative correlation of Ct value and absolute lymphocyte count (p=0.040, r=-0.200). Increasing viral load may elicit higher immune response clinically in moderate to critical COVID-19 patients.
