Abstract

Cancer is a complex disease associated with a wide range of symptoms, declining quality of life, and financial toxicity (FT).To examine the quality of life and symptoms management in Cancer patients experiencing financial toxicity based on a review of published literature.A systematic review was conducted using five databases: Sage Journals, Science Direct, ProQuest, Clinical Key, and Oxford Academic from 2015-2025 years with keywords Quality of Life, Symptom Management and Cancer Patients. The quality of studies was assessed depending on the study design of the 1,050 articles found, only 11 were reviewed. Findings from 11 studies indicated that the quality of life in cancer patients is influenced by multiple factors. Financial toxicity showed a negative correlation with quality of life (r =0.23, p = 0.0057), indicating that higher levels of financial toxicity are associated with lower quality of life. Psychological symptoms such US anxiety and depression were positively associated with FT (r = 0.27, p = 0.0151; r = 0.18, p = 0.0336). High symptom burden, both physical and psychological, significantly reduced quality of life, while social support played a positive role in enhancing well-being (r = -0.17, p = 0.0412). Integrative therapies improved quality of life by 82%, and cost related health literacy was found to reduce financial toxicity (OR = 0.823, p= 0.039). Holistic interventions and attention to the financial challenges faced by cancer patients are essential for improving quality of life, particularly for those affected by financial toxicity. Effective symptom management involves the use of various tools (ESAS, HADS, FACT-G, SESI, EORTC QLQ-C30) and approaches such as palliative care, integrative therapies, symptom cluster management, acupuncture, financial support, social support, enhanced cost-related health literacy, improved psychological resilience, and identification of financial toxicity risks. The quality of life in Cancer patients is influenced by a complex interaction of factors, including financial condition, symptom management, social support, and multidisciplinary care. Enhancing health literacy—especially regarding financial aspects—with comprehensive, evidence-based, and accessible information such as insurance, medication coverage, and financial resources, is critically important.

Abstract

Pediatric cancer patients are particularly vulnerable to oral health complications, primarily due to the adverse effects of chemotherapy. This treatment significantly influences both oral health and nutritional status, especially in children diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Chemotherapy can trigger a range of oral issues, including mucositis, dry mouth (xerostomia), and oral infections, which in turn can hinder proper nutritional intake and compromise overall health. This paper aims to investigate the impact of chemotherapy on oral health and nutrition in pediatric cancer patients, focusing on those with ALL. Through a literature review, the study examines the prevalence and types of oral complications and their effects on well-being. Relevant literature published between 2014 and 2024 was sourced from databases such as EBSCO, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, ProQuest, and Scopus. Using the PICO (Population, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcomes) framework, articles were selected and critically appraised by two independent reviewers. A descriptive method was employed to analyze the data. Out of 2,465 initially identified articles, eight were selected for in-depth analysis. The findings show that pediatric cancer patients face both immediate and long-term oral health issues, including dental abnormalities and jaw development problems. These complications can cause pain, eating difficulties, and social stigma, negatively affecting the child's quality of life. The study emphasizes the need for early oral health intervention, better training for healthcare providers, and the development of standardized oral care protocols. Future research should aim to assess the effectiveness of targeted oral health interventions in improving nutrition and overall quality of life in pediatric oncology patients.

Abstract

Prolonged second stage of labor is an emergency condition that requires immediate treatment by nurses so that there are no complications for the mother and fetus. The physical and psychological problems experienced by mothers with prolonged second stage of labor include infection, exhaustion, dehydration and even death in the mother. Nursing actions for mothers experiencing prolonged second stage of labor include fluid management, pain management, fetal resuscitation, infection control, anxiety reduction, environmental modification, coping strategies and Early Breastfeeding Initiation. The method used is a case study with a focus on the application of Wiedenbach's need for help theory and Kolcaba's comfort in nursing care for mothers who experience a prolonged second stage of labor. The cases managed in this study were five mothers who experienced a prolonged second stage of labor at two different hospitals in the Greater Jakarta area. Nurses can apply the theory of Wiedenbach's need for help and Kolcaba's comfort in providing nursing care to mothers with prolonged second stage of labor.

Abstract

Introduction: Neutropenic fever is commonly found in children with leukemia after chemotherapy. Fever occurs when children's immunity decreases after chemotherapy, and they are prone to infection. This study aims to describe the cultural care behaviors of multidisciplinary health workers in preventing neutropenic fever among hospitalized children with leukemia after chemotherapy. Methods: An ethnonursing study was conducted at a cancer referral hospital in Central Java, Indonesia. Data were collected through observation in two Pediatric ward and chemotherapy unit for three months and FGDs and in-depth interviews with health workers who provided care services to leukemia patients post-chemotherapy. Data were collected from 14 informants: six nurses, four doctors, two clinical pharmacists, and two nutritionists. This study employed four phases of Leininger analysis for qualitative data to develop its thematic structures. Results: The analysis of the entire data has revealed five themes: (1) performing antiseptic and aseptic techniques consistently, (2) nurse and dietician collaboration in handling eating difficulties post-chemotherapy, (3) collaborative interactions interdisciplinary in handling medication, (4) patient placement in an isolation room adjusted to patients' conditions, and (5) nurse's challenge to educate patients and their families. Conclusions: Health workers from multiple disciplines play essential roles in preventing neutropenic fever by involving patients, parents, and other family members. It is necessary for the nurses to collaborate with other healthcare professionals and educate patients, and families to participate in the care interventions for these patients in minimizing the occurrence of infection among leukemia patients.

Abstract

Diastasis rectus abdominis (DRA) in postpartum mothers has a high prevalence, with 85% experiencing this condition, leading to various complaints. However, clinical management remains limited due to the lack of consensus on symptom boundaries and clinical impacts. This study aims to analyze the concept of discomfort due to DRA in postpartum mothers using Walker and Avant’s approach. A descriptive method with concept analysis was applied. Literature search using international electronic databases with a global scope including Scopus, ScienceDirect, MEDLINE, EBSCO, ProQuest, and SAGE, using keywords such as "diastasis rectus abdominis," "interrectus abdominis," "postpartum," and "impact." Inclusion criteria were open-access, including literature review, and full-text articles published from 2018 to 2024. Articles that did not address antecedents, attributes, or consequences of discomfort were excluded. A total of 28 out of 88 identified articles were analyzed, covering various fields such as obstetrics, gynecology, surgery, physiotherapy, radiology, nursing, and public health. The study concludes that discomfort due to DRA consists of primary and secondary symptoms. Primary symptoms include a distended abdomen, abdominal pain, kinesiophobia, impaired self-concept, disturbed social interaction, and reduced quality of life. Secondary discomfort includes hunched posture, back and pelvic pain, spinal and pelvic instability, pelvic floor disorders, and gastrointestinal issues. This categorization of discomfort is expected to establish clearer symptom boundaries. Defining these symptoms can help develop standardized clinical practice guidelines, ensuring more effective diagnosis and treatment for postpartum mothers with DRA.

Abstract

Cancer prevention and early detection efforts in Indonesia remain suboptimal, primarily due to limited public awareness. Therefore, this study evaluated the effectiveness of a card game–based educational intervention in improving women’s knowledge of early cancer detection and healthy lifestyle practices. The researchers employed a quasi-experimental design involving 70 women in Depok and Jakarta, with 40 assigned to the intervention group and 30 to the control group. Eligible participants completed a validated questionnaire before and after the intervention. The intervention group received an interactive education session using card games, while the control group received a standard informational brochure. The ANCOVA analysis revealed a significant increase in post-test knowledge scores in both the intervention and control groups (mean square = 190.301, p < 0.05). However, a significant difference in knowledge score improvement was observed in the intervention group (mean square = 23.618, p < 0.05). These findings suggest that card game–based educational interventions have the potential to improve public understanding of cancer prevention and early detection. It is recommended that larger randomized controlled trials integrate this card game into community health activities (such as school-based programs) to ensure broader engagement and the sustainability of cancer awareness initiatives.
