Abstract

Kata Kunci: caring, dukungan sosial, persalinan, presentasi bokong Application of Caring Theory and Social Support Concept in Mothers in Labor With Fetal Malpresentation: A Case Study ABSTRACT Objective: This study aims to identify the effectiveness of applying Kristen Swanson's Caring Theory and Marjorie A. Schaffer's concept of social support for mothers in labor with fetal malpresentation. A case study design was used. Primary Complaint: Five mothers in labor with fetal malpresentation were examined, including four mothers with singleton pregnancies where the fetus presented in a complete breech position, with the buttocks near the birth canal and both legs folded at the knees. One mother with a twin pregnancy had one fetus in an incomplete breech position, with the buttocks near the birth canal, one leg near the buttocks, and the other leg folded at the knee. Results: Following the application of Kristen Swanson's Caring Theory and Marjorie A. Schaffer's social support concept in intrapartum nursing care, each mother responded differently to the labor experience, acting in ways they found personally comforting. Mothers reported increased anxiety upon learning of the abnormal fetal position, with reactions ranging from crying to stress. Discussion: Nurses can identify mothers' preferences for reducing discomfort, such as providing massages or modifying the environment to enhance comfort. Support from both family and nursing staff is essential at this time. Conclusion: Caring theory and the social support concept can be comprehensively applied by nurses in intrapartum care for cases of fetal malpresentation. These findings are expected to inform future research and nursing intervention management for mothers with fetal malpresentation. Keywords: Caring, social support, childbirth, breech presentation.

Abstract

Most Indonesian gynecological cancer survivors experience chemotherapy side effects on their physical and mental health as they face unmet needs of supportive care, which increases the likelihood of discontinuing treatment. Interventions in telehealth assist survivors in resolving these issues. The aim of this pilot study was to determine the feasibility of fighting distress, self-efficacy, health effects, and sexual (FoRSHE-X) interventions and evaluate their potential impact on distress level, side effects knowledge and management, self-efficacy, and sexual quality of life. The study involved gynecological cancer survivors who underwent chemotherapy and participated in ten weeks of individual social media-based education, tele-coaching, and teleconsultations, from September 2023 to June 2024. The study feasibility and pilot outcomes were evaluated using descriptive statistics and qualitative thematic analysis. Of the twelve women recruited, six (50%) completed the study, filled out pre- and post-intervention questionnaires, and participated in interviews. Fifty-four virtual education, coaching, and consultation sessions were performed individually. The statistical results indicated that participants were highly satisfied with the telehealth program, which significantly increased their knowledge (p=0.02), health practices (p=0.04), and self-efficacy (p=0.01). The qualitative analysis highlighted participants' and coaches' perspectives on the study’s acceptance, barriers, and recommendations. In conclusion, this pilot study suggests that a definitive trial to assess the FoRSHE-X interventions is feasible, acceptable, and can be applied not only to gynecological cancer survivors but also to other types of cancer, thereby broadening the potential impact of the study.

Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: Cancer and its treatments negatively affect patient sexual health. However, this aspect is often neglected in cancer care. As holistic care providers, nurses have a pivotal role in addressing their patient’s sexual health problems. This study aims to summarize what is currently known about nurses’ knowledge, attitude, and practice when helping cancer patients with concerns regarding their sexual health and recent educational strategies to enhance the nurses’ competencies in relation to cancer patients’ sexual healthcare. Methods: The authors conducted a systematic review using PRISMA 2020 Guidelines. The articles were derived from five electronic databases (Scopus, Science Direct, ProQuest, MEDLINE, and PubMed), consisting of full text original research articles published between 2015 and 2024 using quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods. Review articles, books, and book chapters are excluded. Results: The initial search resulted in 1,126 articles. Thirteen articles that met the selection criteria were included due to having good methodological quality. The nurses’ knowledge, attitude, and practice toward sexual healthcare was found to be moderate. Nurses argued that they need specific knowledge and skills to confidently address sexuality problems among their patients. Educational interventions were effective at helping to improve the nurses’ knowledge, attitude, and skills on sexual health care provision. Conclusion: Institutional and educational support are important factors for mastering the nurses' ability to provide comprehensive sexual healthcare. A clear policy, sufficient facilities and comprehensive strategies are needed to mediate consistent cancer patient sexual healthcare provisions.

Abstract

Pediatric cancer patients are particularly vulnerable to oral health complications, primarily due to the adverse effects of chemotherapy. This treatment significantly influences both oral health and nutritional status, especially in children diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Chemotherapy can trigger a range of oral issues, including mucositis, dry mouth (xerostomia), and oral infections, which in turn can hinder proper nutritional intake and compromise overall health. This paper aims to investigate the impact of chemotherapy on oral health and nutrition in pediatric cancer patients, focusing on those with ALL. Through a literature review, the study examines the prevalence and types of oral complications and their effects on well-being. Relevant literature published between 2014 and 2024 was sourced from databases such as EBSCO, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, ProQuest, and Scopus. Using the PICO (Population, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcomes) framework, articles were selected and critically appraised by two independent reviewers. A descriptive method was employed to analyze the data. Out of 2,465 initially identified articles, eight were selected for in-depth analysis. The findings show that pediatric cancer patients face both immediate and long-term oral health issues, including dental abnormalities and jaw development problems. These complications can cause pain, eating difficulties, and social stigma, negatively affecting the child's quality of life. The study emphasizes the need for early oral health intervention, better training for healthcare providers, and the development of standardized oral care protocols. Future research should aim to assess the effectiveness of targeted oral health interventions in improving nutrition and overall quality of life in pediatric oncology patients.

Abstract

The diagnosis of cervical cancer triggers drastic changes in women, encompassing alterations in body image, physical issues, and biopsychospiritual impacts. Physiological challenges involve reduced appetite and stiffness, while psychological impacts include fear, feelings of disability, dependence, and role and financial stress. Spiritual disturbances can arise from the belief that this disease is a punishment from God, sometimes resulting in the loss of spiritual faith. Holistic support is necessary to help them navigate these changes. This research aims to explore the experiences of women diagnosed with cervical cancer. The study design is qualitative descriptive research, where qualitative data is obtained through in-depth interviews with 15 participants at Ulin Banjarmasin General Hospital using purposive sampling techniques. The research identifies six main themes: the initial response to the diagnosis of cervical cancer, the impact of cervical cancer on the physical aspects of daily life, the impact of the disease on psychological aspects of daily life, the impact of the disease on spiritual aspects of daily life, the adaptation of women with cervical cancer to the disease, and support from various sources. The findings conclude that women diagnosed with cervical cancer experience shock, sadness, and fear, highlighting the need for support from family, relatives, close friends, and healthcare professionals.
