Abstract

Skin aging can be divided into intrinsic and extrinsic aging. Even though it is inevitable, symptoms of skin aging are a common concern for patients. As a result, there is a surge in the making of anti-aging cosmeceuticals. However, there is a lack of evidence-based data to support the usage of topical preparations as anti-aging treatments. Therefore, further studies are needed to explore topical treatment options for skin aging. This literature review discusses the mechanism of commonly used topical anti-aging agents and their adverse reactions.

Abstract

Abstract

Lymphocytes are found in blood and lymph. Besides Natural killer (NK) cells, T cells and B cells are the different forms of lymphocytes. Each of these cells plays fundamental role in the body adaptive immune response. B lymphocytes are central players in the immune response; canonically, they have been recognized as precursors of antibody-producing cells: plasma cells. Recent findings have shown that the role of B lymphocytes goes far beyond the production of antibodies. There are different subtypes of B lymphocytes with different participations in innate and adaptive responses that include the recognition of the antigen, its processing, and its presentation to T lymphocytes, as well as the production of cytokines that impact and modulate the response toward the pathogen. Traditionally, it has been considered that B lymphocytes do not have phagocytic abilities that allow them to internalize, to process, or even to be infected by bacterial pathogens. The new information has shown that B lymphocytes can be readily infected by bacterial pathogens and respond to those infections. T lymphocytes play a role in cytotoxic immune responses. They belong to the adaptive immune system and perform a wide array of functions in immune regulation, inflammation and protective immune responses. In recent years, it has been shown that T cells are involved essentially across the entire spectrum of tissue physiology and pathology, not just in reactions or diseases considered to be bonafide immunological, but also, to cite just some examples, in metabolism, in tissue repair, in dysbiosis, and in pregnancy. Basic research on T cells has also sown the seeds that spawned the new era of immunotherapy that is engaging numerous researchers in finding a cure for cancer. The review of this article aims to further understand the latest findings regarding the formation and work mechanism of lymphocytes, especially on adaptive immunity. It summarizes the various forms of lymphocytes and their immunomodulatory roles in health and diseases.

Abstract

Leprosy, a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, causes health problems and endemic in several countries. The number of new cases of leprosy is constantly reported in endemic countries. Therapeutic efforts in leprosy patients are carried out with the aim of reducing the level of transmission and disability of leprosy patients. Leprosy therapy with the use of a multidrug regimen (MDT) has been shown to be able to reduce the number of leprosy cases but has not been able to suppress the rate of growth of new leprosy cases. The constant number of new cases of leprosy in endemic areas indicates community infection and the inability of MDT as a single strategy to complete treatment and stop the transmission of leprosy. The transmission of leprosy is known to be multifactorial involving: microbial factors, host factors, and environmental factors. These factors are thought to cause immune dysregulation and increase the risk of leprosy infection in people living in endemic areas. An understanding of immune dysregulation is needed to achieve succesful treatment and the eradication of leprosy.

Abstract

Geriatric have different skin characteristic compared with they who are in young age. There is a change in both intrinsic and extrinsic aging factors causing skin aging which is marked by skin wrinkles, loss of elasticity, and textural changes. The composition of collagen in geriatrics has decreased and there is an increase in matrix metalloproteinases resulted in skin aging. These conditions together with exposure to UVR, infection, and other risk factors cause various skin problems such as xerosis cutis, decubitus ulcers, dermatophytosis, and herpes zoster. Skin problems can be prevented by changing lifestyles, using some cosmetics, medications, and  having treatments. The prevention methods continues to grow and is still being researched to get optimal results and best suit skin conditions. Treatment of skin diseases in geriatrics should be carried out with caution considering the multimorbidity and immunosuppression that often occur in geriatrics. This article discusses skin differences in geriatrics, mechanisms of skin aging, common skin diseases, prevention, and safe treatment in geriatrics.

Abstract

Herpes Zoster (HZ) is a reactivation of the Varicella Zoster Virus (VVZ), which is characterized by an acute unilateral vesicular eruption grouped with radicular pain around the dermatome. The incidence of HZ increases with age and is rare in children. The prevalence of HZ in children can occur, if they have a history of primary intrauterine infection, are immunocompromised, and who are infected with varicella in the first year of life. One daughter, Ms. B, 15 years old, came to the Skin and Venereology Clinic, PKU Muhammadiyah Surakarta Hospital on December 28, 2022 with complaints of itching and heat, a lesion in the form of multiple clustered vesicles, round in shape, with a size of 0.3-0.5 cm above the skin, erythematous, unilateral, not crossing the midline, the age of the vesicles in one group is the same, but with other groups it is not the same, the skin between groups is normal. Treatment was given acyclovir 4x800 mg per day taken orally for 5 days, triamcinolone 4 mg/day, compressed NaCl 15 minutes 2x daily, caaladine lotion 2x daily on intact lesions and mupirocin calcium on open wounds

Abstract

Drug reactions with eosinophilia and systemic symptom syndrome (DRESS) are rare and potentially life-threatening severe skin adverse reactions (SCAR) The mean age at diagnosis is approximately 50-55 years and less than 10% of patients are under 20 years men : women 0.7-0.8. All drugs used by the patient during DRESS should be stopped immediately. Complications of DRESS are myocarditis, Pneumocystis jiroveciipneumonia, sepsis, liver failure, and gastro-intestinal bleeding. Systemic corticosteroids (prednisolone 1 mg/kg/day) are the gold standard of treatment in the acute phase of patients with severe organ involvement. Therefore, the importance of appropriate therapy to reduce the occurrence of complications from DRESS disease.

Abstract

Background: Epidermal parasitic skin diseases (EPSDs) are a group of neglected infectious diseases caused by parasites that infect the upper layer of the skin. A parasitic infection of the skin is caused by small insects or worms that burrow into the skin to live there or lay their eggs. EPSDs are a public health issue and can occur in children of all ages. Purpose: This study aims to describe the pattern and incidences of parasitic skin infections in children. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study utilizing medical records from the Dermatology and Venereology Clinic of Dr. Harjono Ponorogo General Public Hospital from 2016 to 2020. Result: Our study showed that, of the 1426 children brought to our clinic, parasitic infection was the second most common skin disease found in children with a prevalence of 27.1%. Parasitic infection in children was dominated by males with a proportion of 69.7%, and occurred mostly in the ≥13-year-old age group. Among all ages, scabies is the most frequent parasitic infection found, followed by cutaneous larva migrant (CLM) and pediculosis. Conclusion: The prevalence of EPSDs is increasing with age and is more common in males. This high prevalence is probably due to increased intensity of contact with other people, decreased parental care, and low socio-economic status.
