Abstract

Background: Herpes Zoster (HZ) is a reactivation of the Varicella Zoster Virus (VVZ), which is characterized by an acute unilateral vesicular eruption grouped with radicular pain around the dermatome. The incidence of HZ increases with age and is rare in children. The prevalence of HZ in children can occur if they have a history of primary intrauterine infection, are immunocompromised, and are infected with varicella in the first year of life. Methods: The research design used a case study on one of the patients at the PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital Surakarta Polyclinic. The instruments include informed consent and demographic data questionnaires. Results: Ms B, 15 years old, came to the Skin and Venereology Clinic, PKU Muhammadiyah Surakarta Hospital on December 28, 2022 with complaints of itching and heat, a lesion in the form of multiple clustered vesicles, round in shape, with a size of 0.3- 0.5 cm above the skin, erythematous, unilateral, not crossing the midline, the age of the cysts in one group is the same. Still, with other groups, it is not the same; the skin between groups is normal. Treatment was given acyclovir 4x800 mg per day taken orally for five days, triamcinolone 4 mg/day, compressed NaCl 15 minutes 2x daily, calamine lotion 2x daily on intact lesions and mupirocin calcium on open wounds. Conclusion: Maintaining the body's immune system and managing stress, as well as getting the varicella vaccine/measles vaccine, can prevent the occurrence of shingles

Abstract

Abstract

Drug reactions with eosinophilia and systemic symptom syndrome (DRESS) are rare and potentially life-threatening severe skin adverse reactions (SCAR) The mean age at diagnosis is approximately 50-55 years and less than 10% of patients are under 20 years men : women 0.7-0.8. All drugs used by the patient during DRESS should be stopped immediately. Complications of DRESS are myocarditis, Pneumocystis jiroveciipneumonia, sepsis, liver failure, and gastro-intestinal bleeding. Systemic corticosteroids (prednisolone 1 mg/kg/day) are the gold standard of treatment in the acute phase of patients with severe organ involvement. Therefore, the importance of appropriate therapy to reduce the occurrence of complications from DRESS disease.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyse factors affecting medical students’ readiness for interprofessional education (IPE) implementation. This is an observational cross-sectional study conducted at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta, Indonesia. We performed a total sampling approach targeting all medical students, inviting voluntary participation through online messages. Data collection utilised validated questionnaires: the Indonesian version of the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) and The Interdisciplinary Education Perception Scale (IEPS). All statistical analyses were performed using STATA-BE 18 software. Responses were obtained from 654 medical students, the majority (83.49%) being preclinical students. The mean RIPLS score was 67.28 ± 6.70, and the mean IEPS score was 63.09 ± 5.73. No statistically significant differences in RIPLS scores were found based on age, gender, or educational level. However, there was a significant difference in RIPLS scores between students who had experienced IPE education and those who had not (p-value=0.028). Exposure to IPE education significantly influences medical students' readiness for IPE implementation, regardless of demographic characteristics or educational level.

Abstract

Background: Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) remain a significant global health concern. Education plays a crucial role in prevention, but its effectiveness may vary among different groups. Purpose: The purpose of this research was to determine how well both medical and non-medical staff at Dharma Wanita Orthopaedic Hospital Soeharso Surakarta understood sexually transmitted diseases, as measured by the STD-KQ questionnaire. Methods: This research employed a cross-sectional analytic observational design, involving 46 participants. Data were gathered through a sequence of pre-intervention assessment, educational program, and post-intervention evaluation. Statistical analysis was performed using paired t-tests and independent t-tests. Results: Prior to the intervention, healthcare workers possessed a significantly greater understanding of the subject matter (p=0.022). Both groups exhibited substantial improvements in their knowledge after participating in the educational program (p<0.05). The average scores for healthcare workers improved from 8.19 (± 4.80) to 16.15 (± 4.70), a statistically significant increase (p=0.001). Similarly, non-healthcare workers' scores rose from 13.40 (± 5.92) to 18.10 (± 4.24) (p=0.013). After the intervention, the initial difference in knowledge between the two groups was no longer statistically significant (p=0.154), indicating a closing of the knowledge gap. Conclusion: The educational intervention effectively improved STD knowledge in both groups and reduced the knowledge disparity between HCWs and NHCWs. The research points out the need for thorough and accessible sexual health instruction to improve STD understanding within diverse populations.

Abstract

Introduction: Leprosy or Hansen’s disease, is a chronic granulomatous infection caused by Mycobacterium leprae, which affects the skin and peripheral nerves. The disease occurs more frequently in males and remains a significant public health issue in endemic countries such as Indonesia. Case: A 23-year-old male presented with swelling of both hands, feet, and ears, accompanied by numbness and radiating pain. Dermatological examination revealed multiple erythematous papules and nodules that were anesthetic and symmetrically distributed, accompanied by onychodystrophy. Enlargement of the auricularis magnus and posterior tibial nerves was observed, as well as sensory disturbance in the ulnar nerve area. Slit-skin smear examination of the left ear showed acid-fast bacilli (2+ bacilli per field of view). Discussion: The patient was diagnosed with multibacillary-type leprosy with a type 2 reaction (erythema nodosum leprosum). This reaction represents a complex immune response that can lead to permanent nerve damage if not promptly managed. Conclusion: Comprehensive management involving a combination of anti-leprosy drugs, corticosteroids, analgesics, vitamin B complex, and medical rehabilitation is essential to prevent disability progression and improve functional outcomes. Patient education and regular follow-up are crucial for treatment success. The main challenge in this case is to prevent disability progression and maximize remaining function through comprehensive rehabilitation.
