Abstract

Islamic economics emerges as an alternative paradigm that offers a value-based philosophical foundation through the integration of epistemology, ontology, and axiology within the framework of Islamic economic philosophy. This study aims to conceptually examine the epistemological, ontological, and axiological dimensions of Islamic economics and their integration as the foundation for the development of Islamic economic thought. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach with a library research method, the data were derived from the Qur’an, Hadith, and contemporary academic literature relevant to Islamic economics and the philosophy of science. The findings indicate that the epistemology of Islamic economics is integrative, positioning revelation as the primary source of knowledge that guides reason and empirical inquiry; its ontology views economic reality as a holistic system grounded in the principle of tawhid, in which humans function as both servants (‘abd) and vicegerents (khalifah); while its axiology is oriented toward the realization of falah through the values of justice, balance, trust, and public welfare. The integration of these three dimensions within Islamic economic philosophy affirms that Islamic economics is not merely a technical or pragmatic alternative to conventional economics, but a value-driven and ethical discipline aimed at achieving holistic and sustainable human well-being.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the fiqh transformation of Musyarakah Mutanaqisah as a Sharia-based financing model in Indonesia by assessing the alignment between fiqh theory, the DSN–MUI fatwa, and banking practices. Although Musyarakah Mutanaqisah is conceptually grounded in partnership, gradual ownership, and risk sharing, its implementation across Islamic banks demonstrates a persistent tendency to resemble conventional credit structures, particularly through fixed rental margins, limited transparency, and weak risk-sharing mechanisms. This research employs a library-based qualitative approach using a normative–maqasidi framework combined with critical–empirical analysis. The findings indicate that the reconstruction of Musyarakah Mutanaqisah must be oriented towards the substantive realisation of Maqasid al-Shariah, particularly justice, public interest, and the protection of wealth. Reformulation is required in contractual structures, accounting systems, Sharia supervision, and the integration of sustainability values. Accordingly, Musyarakah Mutanaqisah holds the potential to evolve into a more equitable, transparent, and welfare-oriented Sharia financing instrument.

Abstract

This article examines the Islamization of science as an epistemological response to the crisis of modern science characterized by the secularization of knowledge, fragmentation of disciplines, and the separation between facts, values, and transcendental meaning. The analysis focuses on the thought of Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas and Seyyed Hossein Nasr as two leading Muslim intellectuals who offer fundamental critiques of the modern scientific paradigm from the perspective of Islamic epistemology. Rather than merely comparing their ideas, this study aims to formulate a conceptual synthesis that advances the theoretical discourse on the Islamization of science. Employing a qualitative approach with an epistemological–comparative analysis of the primary works of al-Attas and Nasr, the study is complemented by literature from the philosophy of science and contemporary debates on the crisis of knowledge. The findings reveal that al-Attas emphasizes the purification of the concept of knowledge and the formation of an Islamic worldview grounded in adab, while Nasr underscores the necessity of resacralizing science through metaphysical and cosmological awareness. Based on these analyses, the article proposes a tauhidic–integrative epistemology as its main theoretical contribution, positioning tawḥīd as the unifying principle of revelation, reason, and empirical experience in the development of knowledge. This study argues that the Islamization of science should be understood as a constructive epistemological project with continued relevance for global discussions on science, ethics, and civilizational sustainability.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has brought significant changes to Islamic education, requiring methodological and epistemological adaptations to maintain its relevance. The process of digitalizationmarked by the emergence of artificial intelligence, big data, and virtual learning environments has shifted the educational paradigm from traditional systems toward technology-based learning models. This study aims to reconstruct Islamic education studies through interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches within the context of digitalization. The method employed is library research, involving the collection and analysis of literature from reputable journals, academic books, scientific articles, and relevant documents. The analysis was conducted descriptively and analytically using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method, which was chosen for its ability to provide structured, transparent, and replicable scientific evidence from various empirical research sources, thereby enabling learning to become more holistic and contextual. The databases selected were chosen for their reputation as high-quality sources encompassing numerous peer-reviewed scholarly journals. Meanwhile, the multidisciplinary approach strengthens cross-disciplinary collaboration in developing curricula and fostering innovation in digital-based learning. Furthermore, digitalization demands an epistemological reconstruction to ensure that Islamic values can continue to be internalized through modern technology.

Abstract

This article is a conceptual paper based on historical-genealogical literature review that aims to build an intellectual genealogy model of Islamic economics. Previous studies have tended to address figures, institutions, or research trends separately (see e.g. single-figure studies, bibliometric studies, or historical studies of educational institutions), so there is no framework that brings these three elements together in a single analytical model. Based on a critical synthesis of 15 selected sources through the PRISMA protocol, this study offers a major contribution in the form of a triadic layered genealogy model that connects (1) the scholarly sanad of three influential classical scholars  Al-Ghazali, Ibn Khaldun, and Ibn Taymiyah  as a network that complements each other despite different emphasis (individual ethics, social dynamics, and state regulation); (2) Islamic educational institutions, from halaqah and madrassas to modern Islamic universities, as the node of transmission that most determines the sustainability of ideas across generations; and (3) adaptive transformation mechanisms through instruments such as waqf and shariah governance, which on the other hand are vulnerable to being distorted by neoliberal financialisation and epistemic hegemony, including halal-washing practices. Given that the scope of the study is limited to 15 selected literature, these findings are intended as an initial conceptual model, rather than a comprehensive generalization across eras and regions. This model is expected to be a foothold for the development of a curriculum based on intellectual genealogy and the strengthening of epistemological criticism of the commercialization of contemporary Islamic economics.

Abstract

IntroductionMandailing Coffee is internationally recognized, yet the sustainability of its local micro, small, and medium enterprise ecosystem remains constrained by limited access to finance, weak managerial and technological capabilities, fragmented market relationships, and uneven institutional support. This study examines lopo, a traditional Mandailing communal institution, as a culturally embedded source of social capital within this business ecosystem.ObjectivesThis study analyzes how lopo culture generates social capital, how Islamic economic values reinforce that social capital, and how their interaction supports collaboration, resource mobilization, and the resilience of the Mandailing Coffee micro, small, and medium enterprise ecosystem.MethodThe study employed a qualitative case study design in Panyabungan District, Mandailing Natal Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Data were collected from 25 participants, including coffee farmers, business owners, traditional and religious leaders, Islamic microfinance representatives, local government officials, and academics or business facilitators. Data collection used semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and document analysis. The data were analyzed through data condensation, thematic organization, and conclusion drawing and verification.ResultsThe findings show that lopo functions as an informal socio-economic institution for market information exchange, deliberation, trust formation, reciprocal assistance, and business networking. Repeated interactions support verbal agreements, labor and equipment sharing, informal financing, collective marketing, and access to institutional support. Islamic economic values—amanah, ta'awun, ukhuwah, shura, and al-'adl—reinforce these relationships by promoting trustworthiness, mutual assistance, solidarity, participatory decision-making, and fairness. Together, these mechanisms strengthen stakeholder connectivity, collective problem-solving, and adaptive capacity within the Mandailing Coffee business ecosystem.ImplicationsThe findings suggest that micro, small, and medium enterprise development should strengthen locally legitimate institutions and connect them with financial institutions, government programs, markets, and knowledge networks without undermining their informal trust-based character.Originality/NoveltyThis study develops an integrated explanation linking lopo culture, social capital, Islamic economic values, and business ecosystem strengthening. It extends conventional social capital perspectives by showing how culturally embedded institutions and Islamic ethical values jointly shape collaborative economic practices in a rural Muslim coffee economy.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to analyze the dynamics of the conversion of Nagari Bank into Sharia Nagari Bank, focusing on the forms and causes of potential failure. Method – This research employs a qualitative approach based on in-depth interviews with 19 informants who were directly and indirectly involved in the conversion policy, including regional stakeholders and decision-makers. The primary data are complemented by document analysis to capture regulatory, institutional, and socio-political contexts. The data are analyzed using a political economy framework to identify patterns of resistance, interests, and underlying motivations shaping the conversion process. Findings – The findings reveal that resistance to the conversion is significantly influenced by pragmatic political and economic concerns rather than normative or philosophical objections. Politically, several shareholders—particularly regional leaders—express concern that the conversion could enhance the electability and public image of political rivals in the 2024 elections. Economically, apprehensions center on the potential decline in dividends post-conversion. However, these concerns are not supported by robust quantitative evidence or empirical financial projections. Furthermore, the study finds a weakening role of traditional Minangkabau values as a guiding framework, indicating a shift from value-based decision-making toward interest-based calculation. Practical implications – The study highlights the need for transparent financial analysis and stronger integration of Islamic and customary values to enhance policy legitimacy and reduce resistance. Originality/value – This research offers a novel contribution by linking political economy with Islamic and customary frameworks, revealing the shift from value-based to interest-based decision-making in regional policy.
