Abstract

The study on the reformulation of the concept of nafaqah (financial support) in Islamic family law has become increasingly relevant amid the social and economic transformations brought about by the digital era and the expanding dual roles of women in both domestic and public spheres. This research aims to reanalyze the conceptual understanding of nafaqah based on the values of the Qur’an, taking into account the context of the digital economy and the transformation of modern family structures. The research employs a qualitative approach through library research, combining an analysis of classical texts in uṣūl al-fiqh and family fiqh with contemporary literature discussing maqāṣid al-sharīʿah and gender justice. The findings reveal that the concept of nafaqah in Islamic law encompasses interconnected moral, social, and economic dimensions. Normatively, nafaqah is the responsibility of the husband; however, within the context of the digital economy, this principle requires reinterpretation to align with the Qur’anic values of justice, reciprocity, and partnership. The integration of the principles of ḥifẓ al-māl (protection of wealth) and ḥifẓ al-nasl (protection of lineage) emphasizes that the reformulation of the concept of nafaqah is not merely a legal innovation but also part of a broader effort to preserve the welfare and sustainability of Muslim families in the modern era.

Abstract

This study discusses the rational interpretation of Q.S. al-Baqarah verse 164 concerning the signs of Allah’s power in Tafsir al-Manār by Muhammad ‘Abduh and Rasyid Rida. This study is motivated by the need to understand the relationship between revelation and scientific reality within the framework of modern Qur’anic exegesis. Muhammad ‘Abduh and Rasyid Rida employed a rational (‘aqli) approach in interpreting verses related to natural phenomena, emphasizing the role of reason and scientific observation in recognizing the greatness of Allah. This study adopts a library research method, using Tafsir al-Manār as the primary source, supported by relevant books, journals, and academic articles as secondary references. The analysis is conducted descriptively and analytically to identify the interpretive principles (qawā‘id al-tafsīr) applied by the exegetes, including al-Tafsīr bi al-Qur’ān, al-Tafsīr bi al-‘Aql, al-Tafsīr bi al-Wāqi‘, and al-Tawḥīd wa al-Tajdid. The results show that Tafsir al-Manār interprets natural phenomena such as the heavens, the earth, rain, and wind not merely as physical realities but as āyāt kauniyyah (cosmic signs) that guide human beings to think and strengthen their faith. Revelation and science are viewed as complementary, not contradictory, in affirming Allah’s oneness and wisdom.

Abstract

The Qur’an serves as a comprehensive guide for life, directing spiritual aspects and regulating the social dimensions of human existence. To grasp its universal messages comprehensively, an asbāb al-nuzūl approach is essential, as it traces the historical context of the revelation. This study examines the application of the asbāb al-nuzūl concept in Tafsir al-Jalālain by Jalāl al-Dīn al-Maḥallī and Jalāl al-Dīn al-Suyūṭī and its relevance to the formation of social interpretation, particularly concerning QS. An-Nisā’ [4]:58 and QS. al-Ḥujurāt [49]:9. Employing a qualitative-descriptive approach through library research, this study explores the exegetes’ interpretive patterns. The findings indicate that Tafsir al-Jalālain employs asbāb al-nuzūl not only to explain the causes of revelation but also to affirm broader moral and social meanings. QS. An-Nisā’ [4]:58 emphasizes the values of trustworthiness and justice in public leadership, while QS. al-Ḥujurāt [49]:9 highlights the importance of reconciliation in mitigating social conflicts. The application of the principle al-‘ibrah bi ‘umūm al-lafẓ lā bi khuṣūṣ as-sabab universalizes the message of the verses, making them relevant across the ages. Thus, Tafsir al-Jalālain is not only a concise exegesis (tafsīr ijmālī) but also contributes significantly to shaping a contemporary paradigm of social interpretation that resonates with modern reality.

Abstract

The concepts of Sakīnah, Mawaddah, wa Raḥmah constitute a spiritual and emotional trilogy that the Qur'an proclaims as the fundamental goal of marriage (QS. Ar-Rum: 21). This study aims to analyze thematically (maudhū'ī) the integration of these three principles as the main foundation for the development and resilience of Muslim families in the contemporary era. Through a qualitative approach with literature study and thematic interpretation, it was found that Sakīnah (inner peace) functions as a spiritual foundation; Mawaddah (active, passionate love) as the driving force of the relationship; and Raḥmah (loving kindness that is ready to sacrifice) as a safety net and sustainability. The integration of these three elements provides an ideal model for contemporary Muslim families to face challenges such as digital disruption, changing gender roles, and economic pressures. The results of the study confirm that family resilience does not only depend on material aspects, but primarily on the quality of transcendental relationships based on Qur'anic values.

Abstract

Abstract

The Qur’an, as a guide for all humankind in various aspects of life and as a text with profound breadth of meaning, demands great caution in its interpretation. For this reason, Qur’anic exegesis (tafsir) has developed as a distinct discipline that functions to bridge human understanding with the divine messages contained in the Qur’an itself. One of the important principles in the tradition of Qur’anic exegesis is “al-‘ibrah bi ‘umūm al-lafẓ lā bi khuṣūṣ al-sabab.” This principle holds a central position because it ensures that the meaning of Qur’anic verses is not restricted by their specific occasions of revelation (asbāb al-nuzūl) but remains universally applicable across space and time. One of the exegetes widely known for the strength of his interpretations of Islamic law is al-Qurṭubī, through his tafsir work al-Jāmi‘li Aḥkām al-Qur’ān. However, the extent to which al-Qurṭubī consistently applies this principle has been rarely examined. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the application of the principle al-‘ibrah bi ‘umūm al-lafẓ lā bi khuṣūṣ al-sabab in al-Qurṭubī’s tafsir, particularly in relation to legal verses. This study employed a qualitative descriptive design with a library research approach. The primary data source is the classical tafsir al-Jāmi‘ li Aḥkām al-Qur’ān by al-Qurṭubī, while the secondary data consist of supporting literature such as other tafsir works, books on ‘ulūm al-Qur’ān, uṣūl al-fiqh, asbāb al-nuzūl, and studies on tafsir methodology. The findings of this study indicate that al-Qrṭbī is consistent in implementing this principle, in that he does not treat the specificity of the occasion of revelation as a limitation of the legal ruling. In contrast, he takes the generality of the wording of the verse as the main basis for establishing shar‘ī rulings, so that the resulting laws are universal and transcend their historical context, as seen in the cases of polygamy, the penal code for theft, and ẓihār.

Abstract

The determination of the Hadd for theft in QS al-Ma’idah:38 has long been a point of contention between legal textualism and social reality. This verse is often understood literally, without considering the socio-historical context of the revelation. This article aims to reconstruct the normative meaning of the verse through an analysis of Asbabun Nuzul and the Maqasid al-Shariah approach to reaffirm substantive justice in Islamic law. This study employs a qualitative–descriptive method based on library research, using comparative analysis of classical exegesis (al-Ṭabarī, Ibn Kathīr, al-Qurṭubī) and reformist-modern exegesis (Ibn ‘Āshūr, Rashīd Riḍā, Jasser Auda). The findings show that the Hadd is not intended merely as a punitive instrument but as a moral symbol to safeguard social stability once distributive justice is established. This normative reinterpretation affirms that implementing the Hadd without fulfilling social justice contradicts the Maqasid of Islamic law. In conclusion, authentic Islamic law is not a system of punishment but a divine moral system aimed at honoring human beings and manifesting God’s mercy in social life.

Abstract

Violence, discrimination, and injustice against children and women in Muslim families remain a social problem of concern. One of the root problems is the low level of understanding of the values of the Qur'an, which actually contains the principles of protection, compassion, and justice for all family members. This study aims to examine the concept of Qur'anic literacy as an instrument for fostering awareness and practice of protecting the rights of children and women in Muslim families. Using a qualitative approach based on library research, this study traces relevant verses of the Qur'an, such as QS. An-Nisa', QS. Luqman, and QS. Al-Ahzab, as well as studying classical and contemporary scholars' interpretations of the values of justice ('adl), compassion (rahmah), and respect for human dignity (karamah insaniyyah). The study’s results show that Qur'anic literacy not only includes the ability to read and understand texts, but also includes the internalization of values and their application in family life. Strong Qur'anic literacy encourages the creation of balanced family relationships between rights and obligations, as well as a moral foundation for preventing violence and violations of the rights of children and women. Therefore, strengthening Qur'anic literacy needs to be integrated into family education, Islamic educational institutions, and socio-religious policies to realize a just, harmonious, and civilized Muslim family.

Abstract

This study aims to examine Qur'anic literacy as a conceptual and practical foundation for shaping sakinah (harmonious) and just families amid the challenges of modernity, value disruption, and global spiritual crises. Qur'anic literacy is understood not merely as the ability to read the sacred text, but as an internalization of divine values that cultivates moral, spiritual, and social awareness within Muslim family life. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach through library research, this study analyzes primary and secondary sources, including classical and contemporary tafsir, scholarly books, and scientific articles published in the past five years. Thematic analysis was used to explore Qur'anic principles relevant to the formation of harmonious and equitable family structures. The findings reveal that Qur'anic literacy serves as an epistemological foundation for developing ethical and egalitarian perspectives on spousal relationships and child-rearing. Families with a high level of Qur'anic literacy tend to maintain balanced roles, strengthen spiritual communication, and foster compassion-based dynamics within the household. Furthermore, integrating Qur'anic literacy with digital technology plays a significant role in reinforcing moral education and family resilience in the contemporary era. This study concludes that contextual and reflective Qur'anic literacy is crucial for building Muslim families that are not only harmonious and just but also serve as the cornerstone of Qur'anic civilization grounded in humanism, inclusivity, and social justice.

Abstract

Knowing the authenticity of hadith is indeed different from the Qur'an, because the recording of hadith was only done around the 3rd century Hijri. A span of 200 years, and this is enough to provide the possibility of diversity of hadith texts. Given this historical background, hadith research is still needed to fulfill the intellectual treasure of Muslims in understanding the foundation of a problem through an understanding of the As-Sunnah. One hadith that needs to be reviewed, especially in terms of its evidence is the hadith about the proposal (Khitbah). Proposals in a marriage are highly recommended, but regarding the proposal process itself, it is very diverse, each region has different proposal traditions, so the relevance of this hadith needs to be reviewed again to obtain a more comprehensive meaning of the proposal process. For this research, the author attempted to examine it by asking several problems including what is meant by khitbah, how is the quality of the sanad and matan of the hadith and how the khitbah process is in accordance with the sunnah or rules of the Prophet Muhammad. The author used the Madhu'i method. The object of this research is the method of proposing to a woman and the permissibility of looking at the woman being proposed to. The results of this study explain that the quality of the hadith about proposing to a woman is sahih and can be used as evidence (hujjah) and the quality of the hadith about the permissibility of looking at a woman.
