Abstract

The mathematical critical thinking ability of junior high school students remains at a low to moderate level, particularly in geometry which requires high visualization skills. This study aims to determine whether the critical thinking ability of students using the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model assisted by dual modality learning video is better than students using PBL without video assistance. This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group design. The research subjects were eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 29 Kota Bekasi, consisting of 34 students of class VIII F as the experimental group and 34 students of class VIII G as the control group. The instrument used was a critical thinking ability test in essay form consisting of 6 items with a maximum score of 24. Data analysis was conducted using the Independent Sample T-Test after the data met normality and homogeneity assumptions. The results showed that the mean posttest score of the experimental class was 16.29, higher than the control class at 14.94. The Independent Sample T-Test produced a Sig. (1-tailed) value of 0.0115, less than 0.05, thus H0 was rejected. The critical thinking ability of students using PBL assisted by dual modality learning video was proven to be better than students using PBL without video assistance on flat geometry material in eighth grade.

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether the improvement in students' mathematical problem-solving ability through Baduy traditional house project-based learning is better than that of students receiving expository learning. This research employed a quasi-experimental method with a pre-test post-test non-equivalent control group design. The population in this study was eighth-grade students of SMPN 3 Kragilan in the 2025/2026 academic year. The sample was selected using a purposive sampling technique, consisting of class VIII D as the experimental group with 33 students and class VIII B as the control group with 32 students. The experimental group implemented Baduy traditional house project-based learning on the topic of flat-sided 3D shapes, whereas the control group utilized expository learning. The research instrument used was a written test consisting of 5 items (pre-test and post-test). Descriptive statistical analysis results showed that the average N-gain score of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group. Furthermore, inferential statistical analysis using the Mann-Whitney U Test was conducted because the N-gain data did not meet the assumptions of normality and homogeneity. Based on the results of the hypothesis testing, it can be concluded that the improvement in mathematical problem-solving ability among students who received Baduy traditional house project-based learning was significantly better than that of students who received expository learning.

Abstract

Critical thinking is one of the most essential competencies in 21st century education that needs to be developed systematically throughout the learning process, and mathematics is one of the most strategic subjects for facilitating its development. However, in practice, students at Vocational High Schools (SMK) still demonstrate relatively low critical thinking skills, which is largely attributed to the dominance of teacher-centered learning approaches that provide little room for active student involvement in problem-solving activities. This condition reinforces the urgency of implementing a learning model capable of promoting greater student participation, one of which is Case-Based Learning. Based on this issue, the present study was designed to examine the extent to which Case-Based Learning influences the improvement of critical thinking skills among SMK students. A quasi-experimental method was selected as the research approach, adopting a pretest–posttest control group design as the methodological framework. Two classes served as the research sample, namely the experimental class that received instruction using the Case-Based Learning model and the control class that continued with conventional learning, each consisting of 30 students. The research instrument consisted of critical thinking essay tests administered to both groups before and after the intervention. Data analysis was carried out using the t-test after the assumptions of normality and homogeneity were satisfied. The results revealed a statistically significant difference in critical thinking skills between the two classes, with the experimental class recording a higher posttest average compared to the control class. These findings confirm the effectiveness of Case-Based Learning in supporting the development of students’ critical thinking skills, leading to the conclusion that this model serves as an effective and viable alternative in mathematics instruction at the vocational high school level.

Abstract

Low levels of statistical literacy, as indicated by an average statistical literacy score of 40.6% among prospective teachers, are caused by a lack of connection between the theory taught in class and its application in real life. The integration of Case-Based Learning (CBL) with hypermedia can create an interactive and contextual learning environment, thereby enabling the development of statistical literacy. The objectives of this study include describing the development process, assessing the feasibility, and evaluating the effectiveness of hypermedia-assisted CBL e-modules in supporting statistical literacy. This study uses the Research and Development (R&D) method with reference to the Lee and Owens model. The research subjects consisted of three subject matter experts, three media experts, and 30 students from the Chemistry Education Study Program at a state university in Banten Province. Data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, and statistical literacy tests. Data analysis was performed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The development process went through the stages of needs analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The results showed that the hypermedia-assisted CBL-based e-module was feasible, practical, and effective in improving students' statistical literacy. This is evidenced by expert validation results showing a feasible category (78.5%), positive student responses (79%), and a significant increase in statistical literacy scores after using the e-module. These findings imply that the integration of CBL and hypermedia can be used as an alternative learning strategy that is more interactive and contextual to strengthen statistical literacy. This model is recommended for adoption in the development of digital learning media in statistics courses and similar fields that require data analysis skills.
