Abstract

Low self-acceptance can cause students to be less optimum in developing their potential and adaptation. This research aimed at examining the effectiveness of reality group counseling with confrontation and storytelling techniques to increase the self-acceptance of students at SMK Negeri 11 Semarang. It used a pretest-posttest control group design and involved 24 tenth grade students selected using a purposive sampling technique. Those students were grouped into 3 and given a confrontation technique for 5 sessions, storytelling for 5 sessions, and no treatment for the control group. Findings indicated that both confrontation and storytelling techniques were effective to increase self-acceptance. In detail, the group counseling with a confrontation technique gave better results. Finally, implications and suggestions are provided to support the implementation of reality group counseling.

Abstract

Study attitudes and study habits are important in education because they determine the success of learning. These became the problems in this research because low study attitudes and study habits will cause the decline in students’ academic achievement, so a solution is needed. In dealing with this issue, the present research examined the effectiveness of behavioristic individual counseling with an operant conditioning technique to improve the study attitudes and study habits of the ninth graders at SMP Negeri 13 Semarang. It was experimental research which used a randomized pretest posttest comparison group design. In addition, a manova analysis was done to both experimental and control groups. In detail, the treatment used in this study could improve students’ study attitudes and study habits. Finally, school counselors are recommended to provide a reinforcement program to support the implementation of the behavioristic individual counseling with an operant conditioning technique.

Abstract

Interpersonal skills are heavily needed by individuals to make social adjustments and resolve interpersonal conflicts. This study attempted to examine the relationship between self-efficacy and students' interpersonal skills. It used a correlational research design with a sample size of 300 students. In collecting the students’ data, a self-efficacy scale and an interpersonal ability scale which have been previously tested for validity and reliability were used. The findings indicated that there was a significant positive relationship between self-efficacy and interpersonal skills. Further implications for guidance and counseling practice are discussed as well.

Abstract

Any guidance and counseling services at school will affect students’ development. Thus, all counseling programs at school must be in line with the school vision and missions to emerge innovations in problem-solving so that finally the counseling programs can result changes in students’ behavior and obtain public trust for the school. Regarding this background, the present study attempted to describe the implementation of guidance and counseling services at a senior high school level. It was a qualitative study which involved 9 subjects, namely one school counselor, a school principal, two subject teachers, two guardians, and three students selected using snowball and purposive sampling techniques. Their data were collected using interviews and analyzed using an interactive qualitative model, covering data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results were 1) the guidance and counseling model implemented at the Islamic senior high school was focused on Islamic counseling which emphasized religious aspects in its services, 2) both school counselors and subject teachers collaborated and provided services which were based on religious teachings, and 3) the collaboration increased public trust to school and resulted better counsellor performance. In conclusion, the guidance and counseling services at the school run well due to the collaboration between counsellors and stakeholders, not to mention the strategic counseling.

Abstract

Vocational high school students are vulnerable to getting addicted to smartphones at a high rate. Therefore, the present study examined the effect of parental styles and self-regulation on smartphone addiction through anxiety. It was correlational research which used an expo facto design with the samples of 329 students. In collecting the data, the instruments of Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS), EMBU (Swedish acronym for Egna Minnen Beträffande Uppfostran [My memories of upbringing], and the Short Self-Regulation Questionnaire (SSRQ) were used following the results of validity and reliability tests. Once the students’ data was collected, the multiple regression analysis with two sub-structural models was carried out. It showed that parenting styles and self-regulation had a partial effect on anxiety, and anxiety influenced smartphone addiction. In addition, anxiety mediated the effect of parenting styles on smartphone addiction and the effect of self-regulation on smartphone addiction.

Abstract

Multicultural Counseling is a counseling concept which accommodates cultural differences so that the counseling process can be accepted by counselees. This study attempted to describe the noble values in the Riau Tunjuk Ajar Melayu and their implications for multicultural counseling services. It used a qualitative method with the design of narrative ethnography, while the fordata collection, documentations and interviews were conducted. In addition, the ethnographic phenomena were further revealed using a content analysis, including: description, analysis, and interpretation. Findings showed that the noble values of Riau Tunjuk Ajar Melayu reflected the attitudes of openness and pluralism acceptance practiced by the Melayu society in Riau. Meanwhile, the values also portrayed the practice of multicultural values in the way they present a mentally healthy human figure who is humble, trustworthy, self-aware, confident, and having a sense of shame. Again, the values are universal and can be applied not only by counselors in multicultural counseling services, but also counselees to become good individuals according to the culture of the Riau Malay society.

Abstract

Guidance and counseling service activities in schools can now be assisted by technological advances, one of which is online based. The successful performance of counselors as part of the education system is influenced by many factors such as the ability to master the use of technology and the implementation of management. Objective: The aim of this research is to test whether the SIMAKAN Application Model (Android Based Counselor Management System) is effective in improving MGBK Guidance and Counseling Management Planning throughout the City of Semarang. Methods: this research is quantitative research with a quasi-experiment research design with a true experiment approach with the research population, namely guidance and counseling teachers, members of the Semarang City Vocational School MGBK. This research uses a pretest-posttest control group design. Findings: The research results showed that there was an increase after being given training with a range of 5.32 with a significance value > 0.05. Conclusion: The research results show that the SIMAKAN application training has proven to be effective in increasing the competency of Guidance and Guidance Teachers in Semarang City Vocational Schools.

Abstract

Academic resilience is an individual’s ability to survive and recover in difficult conditions. Many studies conclude that academic resilience assists students in dealing with learning difficulties, improving achievement, reducing anxiety at school, school fatigue and the habit of skipping school. Regarding these issues, the present study aimed at testing the effectiveness of the Android-assisted information service model to enhance students’ understanding of academic resilience. It was a quasi-experimental study which used a non-equivalent control group design to determine the level of effectiveness of treatment in the control and experimental groups. The treatment was in the form of media and guides have been validated by experts with excellent and feasible results. Following the data collection, the analysis was carried out using a paired sample t-test. Subjects in the experimental group (59 students) and the control group (51 students) had relatively similar initial academic resilience scores. Based on the findings, the Android-assisted information service model has been effective in enhancing the understanding of academic resilience in students at SMP Negeri 19 Semarang. Further researchers are recommended to add game and data management features to the Android products being developed.

Abstract

Truancy is a situation in which students violate the rules and regulations at school. Based on this background, the present study investigated 3 vocational schools in Rembang Regency. It aimed at determining differences in truancy in terms of gender, determining truancy in terms of age, and determining school, personal and family factors underlying this violation. To do so, the cross-sectional design was employed. The cluster technique divided the population into sub groups, where the sub groups consisting of the same elements in 248 samples. Following the grouping, the samples data were collected using a truancy scale. Then, the Microsoft excel software was used to generate the respondents’ characteristics. Based on the chi square test, there were differences in truancy between gender and age.

Abstract

This research aims to find out 1) how students' time management was before the classical guidance service. 2) how students' time management is after the implementation of classical guidance service. 3) whether the implementation of classical guidance services can improve students' time management. The research method used Guidance and Counseling Action Research. This research was conducted at SMA Negeri 9 Semarang, the research subjects amounted to 36 students with the criteria of having moderate time management skills. The research data collection technique was obtained from a time management questionnaire. The data obtained were analyzed using a quantitative description. The results showed an increase in students' time management skills from the initial condition before being given action, namely an average of 63.4 to 70, 8 in cycle I and in cycle II to 84.4. Based on these results, it can be stated that there is a significant increase in the time management skills of students in class XI-4 at SMA Negeri 9 Semarang between the pre-cycle of action with cycle I or cycle II.
