Abstract

Bougainvillea leaves are often used by the public as a treatment by drinking boiled water, but their use as a blood sugar-lowering agent is not supported by scientific data. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of reducing blood glucose levels and to determine the dose of extract that is effective in in white rats. The plant's herbal extract was prepared using the reflux method with 90% ethanol solvent. This study uses a laboratory experimental method to compare blood glucose levels in white rats before and after administration of herb extract at doses of 100, 200, and 300 mg/kg BW orally using high-fat feed induction and streptozotocin. Blood glucose levels were measured using a glucometer, and mice were declared positive for diabetes with fasting blood sugar levels above 126 mg/dL. The number of test animals used in this study was 30 mice, divided into 6 groups. A randomized block design was used as the research design. The study's findings revealed that administering Bougainville spectabilis willd herb extract at doses of 100, 200, and 300 mg/kg BW can reduce blood glucose in test animals with an effective dose of 200 mg/kg BW

Abstract

Banana tape is one of the innovations in processing bananas into new processed products that can be enjoyed by the community, which is almost the same as making tape in general. The purpose of this study was to determine the right variation of ragi concentration on the physical and chemical characteristics of kepok banana tape. This type of research is experimental with the Completely Randomized Design (RAL) method with variations in ragi concentration, namely 0.5 grams, 1 gram, 1.5 grams, 2 grams and 2.5 grams with a fermetation time of 3 days. The parameters of this study include physical analysis (taste, flavor, color and texture) and chemical analysis (glucose, alcohol and pH). The results showed that ragi concentration of 0.5 gram produced the best organoleptic test of taste 3.75, aroma 3.4, color 3.6 and texture 3.45. Chemical tests showed that a ragi concentration of 1.5 grams produced the best results in glucose levels of 7.9%, alcohol 1.24% and pH 4.41. This study has the potential to be used as a contextual chemistry learning medium, particularly in understanding fermentation processes, pH changes, and biochemical transformations in everyday food products.

Abstract

Durian seeds (Durio zibethinus murr) have gotten less attention in the past. Therefore, it is necessary to treated them into culinary items like flour. The durian used in flour production was a local durian from Tolitoli and Donggala Regencies. As a result, a study was conducted to determine the quantities of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn) in durian seeds flour. The composition of durian seeds flour from Tolitoli regency obtained was 59.2% for carbohydrate, 3.24% of lipids, 8.75% of proteins, 10.1 mg/kg of Mn, and 6.30 mg/kg of Zn. While durian seed flour from Donggala Regency obtained was 41.76% of carbohydrate, 3.24% of lipids, 10.93% of protein, 7.1 mg/kg of Mn, and 1.22 mg/kg of Zn. According to these results and the National Standardization Agency of Indonesia, durian seed flour can be used as an alternative local food ingredient to fulfil the body's demands for carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, manganese, and zinc. Furthermore, durian seed flour, when processed as a food ingredient, can be used as a replacement for wheat flour

Abstract

In higher education, scientific literacy is still a significant difficulty, especially when instruction focuses on procedural knowledge without including moral principles. The purpose of this study was to create and examine Bulletin-Integrated Character Education (BICE) as a teaching tool to improve and gauge students' scientific literacy. The requirement for educational materials that simultaneously promote character development and higher-order thinking makes this research urgent. In order to produce verified educational media, this study used a Research and Development (R&D) approach based on the Hannafin and Peck paradigm. According to expert validation, the BICE media was highly reliable (Cronbach's ? = 0.88–0.92) and valid (CVI = 0.92–0.95). Strong dependability was also shown by the scientific literacy test (? = 0.92). Students who were taught PBL–BICE fared better than those who were taught PBL alone, according to inferential analysis, with a significant effect size (d = 1.12). Conceptual literacy was a strong predictor of multidimensional literacy, according to correlation and regression analyses (r = 0.71; ? = 0.48). These results suggest that in order to foster advanced scientific literacy in higher education, character-based media should be incorporated into problem-based learning.

Abstract

Durian seeds have a high starch content, making it possible to be used as a raw material for making tempeh as an alternative to soybeans This research aims to make tempeh using durian seeds as raw material and determine the taste of durian seed tempeh using organoleptic tests. The method used to make tempeh from durian seeds is by fermentation, the durian seed samples are washed, cleaned, then boiled and the hard skin removed, then sliced and steamed until soft. The final stage of the two-day fermentation process continues with packaging. To determine suitability for consumption, an organoleptic/taste test (color, taste, texture and aroma) is carried out. The panelists who determined the taste consisted of several people from the Chemistry Study Program, FKIP UNTAD. The results of the study showed that durian seed tempeh was less white compared to soybean tempeh. The panelists' organoleptic tests for color liking levels stated that they liked 50% and disliked 50%, for taste 60% liked, liked 10% and disliked 30%, and texture panelists stated that they liked 60% and disliked 40% and 70% liked the aroma and 30% disliked it. The conclusion obtained in this research is that durian seeds can be used as an alternative for making tempeh and can reduce durian seed waste

Abstract

This study aims to develop an e-module on anthropogenic climate change to enhance students' creative thinking skills. This research is a Research and Development (R&D), using the ADDIE development model. The research was conducted at MAN Tolitoli, taking 28 students each from the experimental class and the control class as comparators in this study. The results of the Cohen's effect size analysis yielded 0.48, categorised as medium, and there was also a significant increase in creative thinking skills in the experimental class, which improved from the category of fairly skilled to skilled and even very skilled in each session. Additionally, there was an improvement in the posttest results of the students in the experimental class.

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem caused by long-term malnutrition, resulting in growth disorders in children. This study aims to predict the mechanism of action of secondary metabolites of katuk leaves as an alternative treatment for growth disorders in children (stunting). This research used network pharmacology to predict compounds from katuk leaves (Sauropus androgynus) based on literature studies. Network pharmacology analysis of katuk leaf (Sauropus androgynus) compounds identified 19 proteins, with HSP90AA1 having the highest degree, 14. This study uses molecular docking to predict interactions between active compounds, such as butyrolactone, phenol, and 2,3,4-trimethylpyrrole, and NAD-dependent protein deacetylase sirtuin-1, Aldo-keto reductase family 1 member C3, Carbonic anhydrase 5A, mitochondrial, Cyclin-dependent-like kinase 5, and Glucocorticoid receptor. The molecular docking results show that the butyrolactone compound has the highest binding affinity for 3 proteins, including NAD-dependent protein deacetylase sirtuin-1, with a binding affinity of -4.7 kcal/mol. The phenol compound has 3 proteins with the highest binding affinity, including Aldo-keto reductase family 1 member C3 at -5.5 kcal/mol. And the compound 2,3,4-trimethylpyrrole has 3 proteins with the highest binding affinity values, including the Glucocorticoid receptor, with a value of -5.8 kJ/mol.

Abstract

Synthetic dyes such as remazol red are commonly used in the batik process, but their residual waste is a major contributor to water pollution. These effluents can degrade water quality, damage aquatic ecosystems, and pose health risks to humans. This research aims to reduce these problems by using an adsorption method that utilises kapok randu branch as an adsorbent for remazol red dye. Kapok randu branches were pyrolysed at temperatures of 400 °C, 450 °C, and 500 °C. This study aims to measure the ability of biochar from kapok randu branches to adsorb remazol red dye under varying weight, time, and pH conditions. The results showed the characteristics of kapok randu branches biochar include moisture content of 400 °C, 450 °C and 500 °C biochar of kapok randu branches of 5.56 %, 5.01 % and 4.80 %, respectively. The ash content of the 400 °C, 450 °C, and 500 °C kapok randu branch biochar was 5.68 %, 6.66 %, and 7.24 %, respectively. The maximum weight of kapok randu branch biochar in adsorbing remazol red dye is 25 mg with an adsorption capacity of 0.312 mg/g. The maximum contact time required was 60 minutes with an adsorption capacity of 1.004 mg/g. The maximum pH for the remazol red dye during the adsorption process was at pH 4, with an adsorption capacity of 5.816 mg/g.

Abstract

Papaya leaves (Carica papaya Linn.) are plants with many benefits due to their active compounds, which can inhibit the growth of malaria parasites. Malaria is an infectious disease caused by the Plasmodium sp. parasite. This study aims to determine the potential of active compounds from papaya leaves (Carica papaya Linn) as an alternative treatment for malaria caused by Plasmodium sp. parasites. This research employs network pharmacology to identify potential protein targets for antimalarial drug development. Also, it employs molecular docking methods to predict the interaction of active compounds such as Carpaine, α,α-Trehalose, Diacylglycerol, N-octanoyl-homoserine lactone, and N-lauroyl glycine with receptors such as Dihydrofolate Reductase-Thymidylate Synthase (DHFR-TS), Falcipain, Dipeptidyl Aminopeptidase, Glucose Transporter (PfHT), Peroxiredoxin (Prx), Dihydroorotate Dehydrogenase (DHODH), Plasmepsin, Rhomboid Protease, Phosphoethanolamine N-Methyltransferase (PfPMT), Enoyl-Acyl Carrier Protein Reductase (ENR), and Apical Membrane Antigen 1 (AMA1). Based on the network pharmacology results, 94 protein targets were identified. Molecular docking results for 8 compounds revealed that 5 compounds had potential as antimalarial agents. From these five compounds, five protein targets were selected for each compound based on their high binding affinity. Among the five compounds, Carpaine was identified as having the highest binding affinity with the Dihydrofolate Reductase-Thymidylate Synthase (DHFR-TS) protein, indicating significant potential for drug development, particularly for malaria prevention. This study also contributes as a scientific learning resource in the fields of chemistry, pharmacy, biotechnology, and health sciences. Therefore, a video-based learning medium was developed and validated in this study, yielding a score of 83.63%, indicating that the learning video is highly suitable as a learning resource.

Abstract

The generation of organic waste at SMA Negeri 1 Palu is substantial, and it is predominantly disposed of in landfills, leading to environmental concerns and the underutilization of potential resources. This study proposes converting organic waste into charcoal briquettes as a sustainable alternative for waste management and energy production. The objective of this research is to evaluate the composition and physicochemical properties of charcoal briquettes produced from organic waste generated at SMA Negeri 1 Palu. The briquettes were prepared from collected organic waste and characterized using standard fuel-quality parameters. The results showed that the produced briquettes exhibited a calorific value of 4385 cal.g-1, density ranging from 0.75 to 0.86 g.cm-3, and a combustion rate of 0.25 g.s-1. In addition, the moisture content, ash content, volatile matter, and fixed carbon were 7.5091%, 5.5894%, 16.1316%, and 78.279%, respectively. These findings indicate that organic waste-derived briquettes possess acceptable fuel characteristics and demonstrate potential as an alternative renewable energy source. This study highlights a practical approach to reducing organic waste while simultaneously generating value-added energy products, particularly in educational institutions.
