Abstract

In general, there are still many academics who do citations manually so that they do not show proper citation consistency. In training the use of reference managers at the UKI Toraja English Education Study Program, the application used was Mendeley. After implementing the training on using the Mendeley application reference manager, the authors can conclude that student participants are able to create a Mendeley account and install, install Plugins for Microsoft Office Word, install Plugins for Web Browsers, use Mendeley applications, add references from files, add manual references, add references from the Web Browser, change reference details, add citations to documents, add bibliography, add citation styles, and change citation styles. Thus, through this training, in addition to strengthening the use of the Mendeley application in writing scientific papers, it is also a hope in the future so that students can produce quality scientific works.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate how students self-regulated their learning in order to build their speaking abilities within the framework of a classroom setting. Since the majority of the study focuses on the relevance of speaking skills, this research is particularly relevant. This study examines how students may better themselves by self-regulating their learning to improve their speaking abilities in terms of smoothness or fluency in a classroom setting. In this particular study, the paradigm of quantitative research was used. The sample in this study was recruited from one of the junior high schools and totalled 33 students. The speaking test was the instrument used to gather the data. Based on the findings of the data, the students had a mean score of 71.66 on the pre-test assessment of their fluency (smoothness). While the post-test had a mean score that was higher than the pre-test, the post-test score for fluency was 81.06. Furthermore, the analysis of the data showed that the value of the t-test was more than the values in the t-test table (12.590 > 1.693). It indicated that there was a considerable disparity between them. Accordingly, it is possible to draw the conclusion that the implementation of Self-Regulated Learning was seen to be successful in improving the students' speaking abilities, particularly their fluency.

This study is qualitative by implementing a cross-sectional design to capture a snapshot of English language engagement among the Law Department Learners in Papua. A diverse sample of the Law Department Learners in Papua from multiple schools had been selected. The sample included learners from different grades, socio-economic backgrounds, and language proficiency levels in the Law Department Learners in Papua. Qualitative data from open-ended questions were subjected to thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns and themes related to intrinsic and extrinsic factors. This study confirms that conventional monotony in instructional materials and insufficient reading practice are the main factors that make the Law Department Learners in Papua lazy to learn English in the classroom. It is recommended to delve deeper into the identified factors of conventional monotony in instructional materials and insufficient reading practice as contributors to students' lack of motivation in learning English in the classroom.

Abstract

This study overviews the English as a foreign language (EFL) lecturers’ language power bases in the high-context culture of Toraja. The writer applied a qualitative study method with a case study design. The writer applied purposive sampling and the subjects of this study are three EFL lecturers. The writer got the data through video observation and interviews. The data analysis technique used is using transcription and coding. It is revealed that the characteristics of lecturers’ behaviors and communication strategies associated with the five bases of power-referent power, coercive power, reward power, legitimate power, and expert power-were observed in the high context culture of Toraja, a common cultural practice among the Toraja learners. Referent power was evident when the lecturer was able to establish a connection with the learners based on shared cultural norms. Coercive power was demonstrated when the lecturer used guilt to pressure learners who were unwilling to do a class presentation. Reward power was characterized by the lecturer providing incentives to learners who complied with requests. Legitimate power was observed when the lecturer maintained strict control over the classroom. Additionally, expert power was identified when the lecturer shared their knowledge and expertise in addressing gaps in the study area.
