Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of local culture-based learning media, specifically grounded in Toraja culture, within multilingual English classrooms at Universitas Kristen Indonesia Toraja. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through classroom observations, document analysis, and in-depth interviews with English lecturers who actively integrate Torajan cultural elements—such as traditional narratives, rituals, and symbolism—into English language instruction. The findings reveal that such integration fosters culturally responsive instructional strategies, enhances student engagement, supports linguistic and intercultural competence, and affirms learners’ cultural identities. Lesson materials and teaching practices proved a successful bridging of content knowledge and cultural relevance, making English learning more accessible and meaningful. While the approach yielded clear pedagogical benefits, it also highlighted challenges including limited access to culturally adapted materials and the need for institutional support. The study concludes that with proper structural backing, the integration of local cultural media has transformative potential for inclusive, identity-affirming language education in multilingual contexts.

Abstract

The use of code-mixing in the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction has become a common strategy employed by lecturers to bridge linguistic gaps between educators and students. In the Indonesian context, where English is not the primary language, this strategy is considered essential in helping students grasp complex learning materials. This study aims to identify the types of code-mixing used by EFL lecturers and analyze their impact on students’ learning behavior, cognitive abilities, and emotional responses in the classroom. The research employed a qualitative approach using a case study method. Purposive sampling was used to select lecturer participants, while snowball sampling was applied to recruit student participants. The study was conducted at Campus 1 of the Christian University of Indonesia Toraja. Data were collected through classroom observations and in-depth interviews with both lecturers and students. The findings reveal that four types of code-mixing were employed by lecturers: insertion, alternation, congruent lexicalization, and shifts in pronunciation. Overall, the use of code-mixing had positive effects, such as enhancing students’ comprehension of the material, increasing their learning motivation, and creating a more inclusive and comfortable classroom atmosphere. However, the study also identified a potential drawback, students’ growing dependence on lecturers for understanding English, which may hinder their ability to learn independently. These findings highlight the importance of implementing a balanced teaching strategy to ensure that code-mixing serves as an effective instructional aid without diminishing students’ opportunities to develop their language skills autonomously. This research is expected to contribute to the development of more reflective and contextually relevant English teaching practices in higher education.

Abstract

Kada Tominaa (Ethics Advice) is a distinctive form of Toraja oral literature expressed in ritual contexts, especially in Rambu Solo’ (funeral) and Rambu Tuka' (thanksgiving). It serves as both ritual poetry and a cultural medium that conveys ethical teachings, cosmological beliefs, and communal values across generations. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach to analyse the literary expressions of Kada Tominaa. Data were collected from ritual speeches delivered by traditional speakers (Tominaa) and supported by interpretations from community elders. The analysis focused on specialised vocabulary, metaphorical meanings, and sociocultural functions embedded in ritual discourse. The study reveals that Kada Tominaa employs specialised vocabulary rarely used in daily Toraja conversation, including Ombo’ (born), Kombong Mentolino (becoming human), Tangkean Suru’ (family prayers), and Tibaen Passoeanna (let him go there). These terms carry layered metaphorical meanings, symbolising the interconnectedness of life and death, human responsibility, communal solidarity, gratitude, leadership, and spiritual continuity. The vocabulary serves as a cultural repository, preserving ancestral wisdom while reinforcing Torajan identity and social cohesion. The findings highlight that Kada Tominaa is more than ceremonial speech; it is a vital medium of cultural continuity that integrates language, metaphor, and ritual performance. By embodying ethical principles and cosmological perspectives, Kada Tominaa sustains the Toraja worldview and ensures the transmission of traditions across generations.
