Abstract

According to Grice's cooperative principle (1975), speakers must obey cooperative principles maxims to provide the required information. However, speakers also flout maxims for several reasons, such as incapability of speaking briefly, honestly, clearly, and relevantly. This research aims to find out the kinds of cooperative principle maxims obeyed and flouted by the main character in The Heat movie. The researcher uses a descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research are Mullins’ dialogue as the main character. The data source is The Heat movie. The results of this research show that 49 out of 89 data obey cooperative principle maxims, including the maxim of quality (32), the maxim of relation (9), the maxim of manner (4), and the maxim of quantity (4). Besides that, 40 out of 89 data flout cooperative principles maxims, including flouting the maxim of relation (16), the maxim of quantity (12), the maxim of manner (9), and the maxim of quality (3). The conclusion is that the main character in The Heat movie tends to obey the maxim of quantity and flout the maxim of relation.

Abstract

According to Leech (in Cruse, 2000) politeness maxim is needed to maintain of harmonious and smooth social relations in the face of the necessity to convey convoluted messages. The aim of this research is to find out the most dominant types of politeness maxim used by the main character in The Help film. The researchers use a descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research are the utterances and the dialogues between Aibileen as a main character with other characters. The data source is The Help film. The result of this research shows that there are 43 data of politeness maxims in The Help film. The maxims include agreement maxim (12), praise maxim (9), consideration maxim (8), generosity maxim (6), modesty maxim (3), tact maxim (3), and sympathy maxim (2). Thus, the most dominant maxim that is used by the main character of The Help film is agreement maxim (12), which is minimize disagreement with the hearer and maximize agreement with the hearer. It is concluded that the main character reduce disagreement frequently.

Abstract

This research discusses subtitling strategies for expressive utterances of a movie entitled ‘The Father’ from English into Indonesian. The objectives of this research are to identify types of expressive utterances and to investigate subtitle strategies used in translating the expressive utterances of the main character in ‘The Father’ movie. The researcher uses the qualitative method. The sources of the data are English and Indonesian original subtitles of ‘The Father’ movie. The data of this research ar e expressive utterances produced by the main character in ‘The Father’ movie. The results show that there are six types of expressive utterances in ‘The Father’ movie, including boasting (22), deploring (20), lamenting (15), thanking (6), apologizing (5), and forgiving (1). Besides that, there are eight subtitling strategies are used, including transfer (40), paraphrase (25), condensation (4), expansion (3), deletion (2), imitation (2), decimation (1), and transcription (1). Based on the results of the analysis, the most dominant type of expressive utterances used in the movie is Boasting (32%) and the subtitling strategy frequently used is Transfer (51%).
