Abstract

This review article is written to provide information to readers regarding the potential of quail as a genetic resource of poultry for poultry-based food production. Quail was first domesticated in Japan and has strong potential for development as both a meat and egg producer. This species is known for its high feed efficiency in meat production, characterized by a high carcass yield, dominant meat deposition in the breast and thigh, and a superior meat-to-bone ratio compared to native chickens and broilers. In addition, quail demonstrates egg production capabilities that are nearly comparable to those of commercial laying hens, although with slightly lower feed efficiency. Based on these characteristics, quail is worthy of consideration as a genetic resource of poultry that is efficient and economical in providing animal protein.

Abstract

The rising demand for sustainable and welfare-conscious poultry production has driven renewed interest in forage-based feeding systems. This systematic review explores the nutritional and functional roles of various forage types such as legumes, grasses, and aquatic plants in poultry diets. The review synthesizes evidence from recent Scopus-indexed publications, focusing on nutrient composition, bioactive properties, performance outcomes, and potential limitations. Forages provide protein, essential fatty acids, antioxidants, and phytochemicals that can enhance feed efficiency, immunity, gut health, and product quality in poultry. Their integration also aligns with circular agriculture principles and improves animal welfare through behavioral enrichment. However, the practical adoption of forage in poultry systems is constrained by variability in nutritional value, the presence of anti-nutritional factors (ANFs), low digestibility, and seasonal availability. Strategies such as fermentation, enzyme supplementation, and preservation techniques offer promising solutions to these challenges. This review identifies key research gaps, including the need for standardization of forage nutritional profiles, optimal inclusion rates, and long-term health impacts. Future directions highlight the potential of integrating precision nutrition technologies and policy support to enhance forage-based systems. Overall, forage represents a valuable component of sustainable poultry feeding strategies that balance performance, welfare, and environmental stewardship.

Abstract

Edible film is a thin, edible film used as a food coating. The advantages of edible film include its biodegradability and its ability to maintain the quality and shelf life of the food product it covers. The objective of this study was to ascertain the impact of varying concentrations of sorbitol on the thickness, water vapor transmission rate, and microstructure of whey-chia seed edible film. The present study employed a Completely Randomized Design, comprising three distinct treatments, each with three replicates. The data obtained were analysed using Analysis of Variance, and if there were significant differences between treatments, these were followed by Duncan Multiple Range Test. The treatments incorporated the following: P1 (10% sorbitol), P2 (20% sorbitol), and P3 (30% sorbitol). The variables measured in this study were thickness, water vapor transmission rate and edible film microstructure. The findings demonstrated that the incorporation of sorbitol at varying concentrations elicited a highly significant effect (P<0.01) on the thickness of the edible film. However, the water vapor transmission rate test did not yield a significant difference (P>0.05). The mean thickness of the samples ranged from 0.0296 to 0.0303 mm, and the water vapor transmission rate ranged from 4.60 to 5.68 g/mm²/day. Microstructure analysis revealed that the incorporation of sorbitol enhanced the flexibility and uniformity of the distribution of the films at concentrations of 10% and 20%. However, at a concentration of 30%, the films exhibited increased rigidity and reduced flexibility. The utilization of a 20% sorbitol concentration was identified as the optimal treatment.

Abstract

The availability of quality feed is a crucial factor in supporting the productivity of Peranakan Ettawa (PE) goats, which have high potential for both milk and meat production. The main challenges faced by farmers, particularly those in the Kerta Bangkit Livestock Group, Gangga Village, North Lombok, are the limited availability of forage during the dry season and the high cost of commercial feed. To address these challenges, a community service program was implemented, focusing on the utilization of organic waste as an alternative feed source. The program was conducted on June 25, 2025, involving 21 farmers as active participants. The activities included a preliminary survey, participatory socialization, training on semi-moist feed fermentation techniques using organic waste, and field mentoring. The training results showed an improvement in farmers’ knowledge and skills in processing organic waste into nutritionally valuable feed. Field evaluations recorded an average body weight gain of 62–85 g/head/day in PE goats after receiving fermented feed. In addition to reducing production costs, the program also contributed to environmentally friendly waste management. Overall, this community service program successfully enhanced farmers’ independence, supported the sustainability of smallholder livestock farming, and provided positive impacts on both community welfare and the environment.
