Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of personal deixis in the documentary film Dirty Vote and its implementation in Indonesian language learning for Grade XI high school students through a teaching module on short story writing. This research employed a qualitative method. The data were collected using observation techniques, including tapping, non-participatory observation, and note-taking. The data were derived from the utterances of Bivitri Susanti, Zainal Arifin Mochtar, and Feri Amsari in the documentary Dirty Vote directed by Dandhy Dwi Laksono. A total of 134 instances of personal deixis were identified, consisting of: (1) 29 first-person singular; (2) 71 first-person plural; (3) 8 second-person singular; (4) 12 third-person singular; and (5) 14 third-person plural deixis. Among these, the first-person plural deixis we appeared most frequently. Its use indicates inclusivity, in which the speaker involves the second person (the audience) in the conversation. In this study, the use of we serves as a rhetorical strategy by Bivitri, Zainal, and Feri to make the audience feel involved and become part of the film.

Abstract

Abstract

Banten people in Indonesia speak two different local languages: Banten Javanese and Banten Sundanese. In reality, it demonstrates that both languages share similarities in phonological and morphological patterns. The purpose of this study is to investigate the language kinship and dialect variations that occur within these local languages. This research employed a case study that involved eight native speakers of Banten Javanese from Serang, as well as eight native speakers of Banten Sundanese from Pandeglang and Lebak. In this study, non-participant observation was used to investigate the dialect variation used among the respondents. Then, semi-structured interviews and documentation were used to analyze the language kinship and separation time between Banten Javanese and Sundanese. The data were analyzed using Miles et al.s model in combination with Swadeshs lexicostatistical technique. The results revealed that (1) 51 pairs of identical words share both morphemic and phonemic similarities; (2) glottochronological estimates suggest that the separation of these local languages from the proto-language occurred between 1171 and 311 BC; and (3) regional dialects are the primary influence on the dialectal variation of these languages. Since these local languages are widely spoken in Banten, the findings reveal important linguistic relationships among local languages, emphasize the role of regional factors, and determine the value of glottochronology in tracing language development and variation.

Abstract

This study discusses the use of politeness in the 2024 Banten Regional Election campaign materials found on billboards and pamphlets, with the aim of describing the realisation of politeness maxims based on Geoffrey Leech's (1983) theory and implementing them in advertising language learning at the junior high school level. The research method used was qualitative descriptive with data collection techniques through documentation, coding, and discourse analysis. The research data consisted of 36 campaign texts analysed based on six maxims of politeness. The results showed that there were 36 data points for all maxims of politeness, namely 10 maxims of sympathy, 6 of praise/appreciation, 11 of agreement, 2 of generosity, 4 of humility, and 3 of wisdom/prudence, identified in the campaign texts. Each maxim serves to reinforce the candidate's positive image while influencing public opinion in a polite manner. The findings of this study can be used as teaching material for advertising language in junior high schools because they provide concrete examples of the application of polite and contextually appropriate persuasive language. This study contributes to enriching pragmatic studies and supports the development of students' advertising text analysis and production skills.
