Abstract

Advanced age or elderly refers to individuals who have reached the age of 60 and above. According to data from the National Socioeconomic Survey in March 2020, there is a total of 10.48%, consisting of 51.81% elderly women and 48.19% elderly men. The elderly population undergoes the aging process, making them at a higher risk of degenerative diseases. According to Basic Health Research in 2013, the most common diseases among the elderly are hypertension (57.6%), arthritis (51.9%), stroke (46.1%), dental and oral problems (19.1%), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (8.6%), and diabetes mellitus (4.8%). Hypertension can lead to other disorders, such as cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular diseases have a high mortality rate and can be caused by various factors, such as diabetes mellitus and obesity resulting from an unhealthy lifestyle. Therefore, through education on cardiovascular diseases and the formation of elderly cadres and health corners, efforts to prevent cardiovascular diseases in the elderly are expected to be optimally implemented. The main target of this program is the congregation of the Indonesian Christian Church (GKI) in Sepanjang Sidoarjo, Taman District, Sidoarjo Regency. Activities include pre-tests and post-tests related to cardiovascular diseases in the elderly, health seminars, and the establishment of health corners. The results of this activity show that the respondents' knowledge level, assessed through questionnaires, had an average pre-test score of 12.52 and a post-test score of 14.71, indicating a significant change with a p-value < 0.001 meeting the significant level of 95%.

Abstract

Biology is a dynamic and constantly developing science. The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia reported nine cases of childhood polio in East Java in January 2024. In addition, the Ministry of Health launched a pilot project to implement Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes as an innovation to control dengue fever in five big cities in Indonesia. This health problem is studied in biology lessons on viruses in senior high school. This paper aims to analyze the knowledge of the concepts of polioviruses and Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes in the biology teacher community in Sidoarjo. The respondents were 43 biology teachers in Sidoarjo. Respondents' prior knowledge was measured by pretest. After the respondent takes the pretest, the respondent gets the concept of the virus. After the material, respondents do a post-test. 11 pretest questions and 11 post-test questions are packaged in Google form. The results showed that all participants participated in the activity from start to finish, taking the pretest, listening to the material, and doing the post-test. The pretest mean score was 40.18, and the post-test mean score was 91.36. The highest pretest score was 81.81. The highest pretest score was 100. A total of 15 teachers (34.88%) were unsure that Wolbachia-infected mosquito was the best solution to reduce disease. Twenty-one respondents (48.83%) agreed mainly with society's concern that the Wolbachia-infected mosquito is dangerous for humans. Respondents' knowledge increased after receiving the concept of the virus

Abstract

Dengue fever (DF) is a viral disease transmitted by the Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) mosquito, which has the fastest spreading cases. Drug and vaccines are still unavailable, so the Government is focusing on mosquito control. One method of biological control is to use betta fish (Betta splendens) as predators of Ae. aegypti larvae. Betta fish have various varieties, which may have different abilities in preying on Ae. aegypti larvae. The study aimed to analyze the potential for controlling Ae. aegypti larvae using three varieties of B. splendens fish (multi-colored plakat koi, xanthic morph plakat, and halfmoon varieties) during the day and evening. The test was carried out by inserting 25 Ae. aegypti larvaes into an aquarium containing B. splendens fish. Testing starts at 12.00 and 15.00 WIB and replicated five times. Observations started from the fish started preying on larvae until the fish ate all larvae. The predation ability of each variety of B. splendens fish based on predation time was analyzed using the one-way ANOVA test and the unpaired data t-test. The analysis showed that the multi-colored koi plakat variety preyed Ae. aegypti larvae faster than the xanthic morph plaque variety (P < 0.05) and not significantly different from the halfmoon variety (P > 0.05). There was no difference in the ability of B. splendens fish to prey larvae during the day and evening (P > 0.05). B. splendens fish, the multi-colored koi plaque variety, and the halfmoon variety can be biological predators of Ae. aegypti larvae.
