Abstract

Plastic waste has become a national and international issue. Plastic waste will degrade into smaller sizes, such as microplastics. Microplastic contamination can occur in coastal and marine areas which can have a negative impact on the environment, disrupting the balance of the ecosystem and aquatic biota. Sungai Jebung located in the coastal area of Desa Sungai Nibung, has the potential to microplastic pollution. This research aims to identify the type, density and type of polymer of microplastics in Sungai Jebung, Desa Sungai Nibung, West Kalimantan. Water sampling was carried out at three stations with two repetitions. Identification of microplastic types was carried out using a binocular microscope and polymer analysis was done using FTIR. The types of microplastics found in the water samples consisted of films, fibers, fragments and pellets. Film and fiber have a higher percentage compared to other types. The average total density of microplastics was 3,188.94 particles/L. The types of polymers found include polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), and polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE).

Abstract

Abstract

The research aims to enhance marine literacy and raise awareness among high school students in Mempawah Regency about vital role of mangrove ecosystems in maintaining coastal environmental balance. Limited student understanding has contributed to low participation in conservation efforts. A participatory educational approach was implemented through material presentation, interactive discussion, and marine equipment demonstrations. Questionnaire results indicated that over 90% of participants reported an increased understanding, with most expressing motivation to engage in mangrove conservation activities. These findings highlight the effectiveness of participatory methods in fostering marine literacy and environmental awareness. The program’s success is expected to serve as a sustainable model for environmental education in schools and can be expanded to promote ecological consciousness at the community level.

Abstract

Desa Sungai Nibung is a Coastal Waters and Small Islands Conservation Area (KKPP3K) in Kabupatem Kubu Raya. This village has abundant natural resources with high diversity, including crab, fish, shrimp, squid, octopus, and finless dolphins. This natural biota is supported by fertility and good water quality. Water fertility reflects high nutrient content and reports phytoplankton as primary producers. Nutrients in water are available in the form of nitrates and phosphates. These nutrients are needed by phytoplankton and aquatic organisms for their survival. The fertility of waters can also be determined by the chlorophyll-a content, which is the dominant pigment of phytoplankton. This pigment plays a role in photosynthesis. The fertility of the waters of Desa Sungai Nibung in the sea (Station I and II), estuary (Station III), and river (Station IV and V) has been determined. The nitrate and phosphate content in air samples is described in accordance with SNI 06-2480-1991 and SNI 06-6989.31.2005, respectively. The chlorophyll-a was analyzed using the trichromatic method using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer at 664, 647, and 630 nm wavelengths. The nitrate and phosphate content of the waters of Sungai Nibung Village are 0.9-1.5 mg/L and 2.06-2.19 mg/L respectively. Chlorophyll-a in the waters of Sungai Nibung Village is 2-5 μg/L, which is included in the mesotrophic category.
