Abstract

Indigenous advice are one of the sources of local wisdom somewhere.  Local wisdom becomes an important issue in sustainable environmental control. This research aims to analyze and explain the local wisdom of Kalaodi Village, Tidore Islands City which is influenced by Bobeto indigenous advice.  The research method used is descriptive with the variables of village place, customary rules, collective memory and spatial system. The research procedure includes the stages: describing the topic of information related to advice and object selection; questioning matters related to advice through informants' memories; the decomposition of the information obtained becomes the focus of the problem; data collection and recording field data through observation and interviews; data analysis and writing the results. The results showed Bobeto indigenous advice to be the main factor influencing the local wisdom of Kalaodi Village, Tidore Islands City

Abstract

Kasepuhan Sinar Resmi are part of the Banten Kidul Indigenous Community with a cultural base of rice in their lives. The settlements are formed from natural, geographic, socio-economic-cultural activities that have spatial characteristics. The spatial peculiarities of the settlement are interesting things to be studied and reveal their physical and philosophical manifestations. With a qualitative descriptive analysis approach, this study aims to identify and describe the characteristics of the Kasepuhan Sinar Resmi housing based on non-physical and physical aspects. The variables studied were: 1) socio-cultural and economic, 2) public activity, 3) natural and geographic conditions, 4) spatial-forming elements of settlements, 5) physical spatial layout, and 6) building typology. The results showed that the character of the settlement was formed based on non-physical aspects in the form of consistency in carrying out the tatali paranti karuhun, as well as respect and obedience to the leaders as regulator of life in kasepuhan. This is the main factor that greatly influences the spatial layout of the Kasepuhan Sinar Resmi’s settlement physically apart from the natural and geographical conditions of the area. The implementation of respect for karuhun is the continuity of the rice culture that has been preserved until now, which is sustainable in all farming activities, and the socio-culture of the kasepuhan community.

Abstract

Local wisdom of Klepek village involves a sacred space called punden. The implementation of the tradition with punden as a sacred space is an embodiment of the inner responsibility and gratitude of the community to the ancestors who built the village. Traditional activities involving punden consist of the nyadranan tradition, barikan, preparation for celebrations and thanksgiving after harvest. The focus of this research is on the nyadranan tradition. This study uses a qualitative method. Data from the object of observation was studied descriptively. The belief of the people of Klepek Village who believe punden as a sacred place results in the use of space. With the use of space for sacred activities, it can also be seen the factors that form it, namely: activity, purpose, time and actors involved. The interaction of these factors with the space used shows the meaning of space.

Abstract

Bioclimatic architecture is composed of climate-responsive knowledge in vernacular buildings as an effort to create comfortable conditions. This study aims to evaluate the suitability of the application of bioclimatic design to the performance of the thermal environment in one type of Bugis house. The method used is visual assessment and measurement of temperature and humidity in the case studies of Jida and Lammada houses, South Sulawesi. The results of visual observations show the accuracy of the bioclimatic design on the volume and slope elements of the roof; wall type and material; floor height and shade tree layout. The performance of the thermal environment in the living room and bedroom of Lammada house is better than similar rooms at Jida house. The bioclimatic elements that affect the performance of the thermal environment are the volume of the roof, the type and material of the walls and the height of the floor.

Abstract

Roma Tabing Tongkok, a vernacular house of the Madurese Pendalungan community in Situbondo, reflects local adaptation to the region’s hot-dry climate. This study aimed to examine its climate-responsive features and thermal comfort performance using a mixed-method approach combining visual analysis with temperature and humidity measurements conducted over two months (October–November 2023). Results shows that the house’s linear form, natural materials, and cross-ventilation openings support climate adaptation, yet their effectiveness remains limited due to suboptimal building orientation, lack of shading, and variations in roof height that affect heat release. These findings highlight the need to integrate additional passive strategies, such as low-conductivity ceilings, vegetation as a shading, and improved opening orientation to enhance thermal comfort. Strengthening these design adaptations can help sustain vernacular architecture while offering a model for energy-efficient, climate-responsive housing in dry tropical regions.

Abstract

Urban public spaces are essential for meeting the community's needs for comfort and social interaction. Urban density contributes to the lack of public space, so the remaining public space must be used optimally. In Kayutangan Heritage, Malang, Indonesia, public spaces are used for domestic activities with private characteristics and for tourist activities with public characteristics. Optimizing the use of public space, especially the alley in the Kampung Heritage Kayutangan alley, requires planning and control to prevent conflicts and ensure available spaces support both functions in a balanced manner. This study identifies the behavior patterns of public space users in Kampung Kayutangan using behavior mapping. Through direct observation, the researcher collected data on the use of alleys as public spaces, including activity types, gathering points, territories, and timing. The data is compiled in a place-centered mapping format. The results of the study show the spots in public space that are the centers of activity, the variety of activities, their intensity, and the territories they occupy. The results of this study contribute to the optimal and context-based planning and development of public spaces in tourism kampung (based on community needs), especially in Kayutangan Heritage Kampung.

Abstract

Iklim tropis lembap dengan suhu dan kelembapan yang tinggi menuntut bangunan untuk mampu beradaptasi melalui penerapan desain pasif. Rumah Gadang sebagai arsitektur vernakular Minangkabau memiliki berbagai elemen desain pasif yang berkembang sesuai kondisi lingkungan setempat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pengaruh topografi terhadap kinerja desain pasif pada Rumah Gadang Sawah Laman dan Rumah Gadang Sumpur. Metode yang digunakan adalah pendekatan deskriptif-komparatif melalui analisis kualitatif elemen desain pasif dan analisis kuantitatif berdasarkan pengukuran suhu serta kelembapan udara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kedua Rumah Gadang mampu menciptakan kondisi higrotermal yang relatif nyaman melalui penerapan rumah panggung, ventilasi alami, atap gonjong, dan material kayu. Rumah Gadang Sawah Laman yang berada pada kawasan persawahan menunjukkan kestabilan suhu dan kemampuan pengendalian kelembapan yang lebih baik, sedangkan Rumah Gadang Sumpur yang berada pada kawasan perbukitan memiliki kemampuan menunda perpindahan panas yang lebih tinggi dengan nilai time lag mencapai 3 jam. Secara keseluruhan, topografi berpengaruh terhadap kinerja desain pasif bangunan, sementara elemen desain pasif Rumah Gadang terbukti efektif dalam mendukung kenyamanan higrotermal pada iklim tropis lembap.   Kata kunci: Desain Pasif, Rumah Gadang, Kenyamanan Higrotermal, Iklim Tropis Lembap

Abstract

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is a pressing issue in densely populated and poorly ventilated spaces, where pollutants such as PM2.5, PM10, and excessive humidity contribute to health risks including Sick Building Syndrome (SBS). This study proposes a passive and sustainable solution through Coconut Waste Interior Panels (CWIP), made from a 50:50 mixture of activated coconut charcoal (CCAC) and coconut fiber, packaged in perforated wooden boxes. Experiments were conducted in a 27 m³ enclosed room with four scenarios: with/without CWIP and with/without fan circulation, using mosquito coil smoke as the pollutant source. The results showed a significant improvement in indoor air quality (IAQ), with CWIP reducing PM2.5 from 65.67 µg/m³ to 40.27 µg/m³ and PM10 from 82.73 µg/m³ to 49.93 µg/m³ (p < 0.001) without fan circulation. A moderate decrease was also observed with fan assistance. Humidity decreased significantly under static conditions. These findings highlight CWIP as an effective, electricity-free, and environmentally friendly alternative, supporting waste utilization and sustainable indoor air quality improvement in resource-limited and environmentally conscious settings.

Abstract

Community Sustainability Assessment (CSA) was developed to help communities evaluate their achievements and chart a course towards increasing sustainability. In CSA, each of which is as important as the others, are the Environmental, Social and Economic aspects of society. The CSA is a comprehensive checklist that anyone can complete to get a basic idea of how sustainable a community is with a score that is effective for promoting understanding and measuring sustainability in society, and applies to any community. Although it requires a good knowledge of the lifestyle, practices and characteristics of the community, it does not require detailed research, calculations and quantification. One village that is interesting to know about its level of sustainability is Serang Village, Blitar. Serang Tourism Village, Panggungrejo District, Blitar Regency, is included as one of 50 tourist villages where, according to the measurement results, Serang Village has the highest score in terms of the Spiritual Aspect of its community.

Abstract

Vernacular houses in Indonesia embody indigenous wisdom for climate adaptation, making the performance of their passive design a relevant topic in sustainable architecture. Modernization and increasingly uniform building forms have eroded climate-responsive principles, raising concerns about thermal comfort amid climate change. This study investigates how a Joglo house in Ngrogung, Ponorogo, Indonesia, maintains indoor comfort through passive strategies. Field observations and continuous monitoring over three months measured air temperature and relative humidity in four interior zones (Omah Ngarep, Omah Mburi, Omah Tengah, Kamar). Performance was evaluated using six criteria covering twelve passive-design parameters. The mean indoor temperature stabilized at 25.77 °C (October 26.18 °C; November 25.92 °C; December 25.20 °C), while relative humidity averaged 75.45%, indicating generally comfortable conditions. Comfort gains were chiefly associated with building form and envelope porosity: favorable orientation limiting solar load, insulated roof enclosure, light-colored breathable walls, and jalusi/louvered windows that sustain airflow with supportive site layout. Conversely, underperforming parameters included limited roof volume (29.75% of total), short eaves (60 cm), dark roofing, small operable window area (2.06% of floor area), and low floor elevation (65 cm). Overall, synergistic interactions among orientation, material porosity, and natural ventilation underpin resilient thermal behavior.
