Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease whose prevalence continues to increase every year. According to predictions from the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of diabetes sufferers in Indonesia will increase from 8.4 million in 2000 to around 21.3 million in 2030 (Widiastuti et al., 2022). Uncontrolled diabetes can cause various serious complications, such as heart disease, kidney damage, blindness, and amputation. Therefore, effective management of diabetes mellitus is very important to prevent worse health impacts. One alternative approach that is increasingly popular is the use of herbal plants, which have been shown to have the potential to lower blood glucose levels and help manage diabetes. This study aims to summarize herbal plants that have been scientifically proven to have an effect on controlling blood glucose levels in people with diabetes mellitus. The results of this literature review are expected to provide new insights for researchers and medical practitioners in developing more natural and affordable diabetes treatments.

Abstract

Mental health issues such as anxiety and depression are increasingly prevalent among adolescents. The gut–brain axis has been highlighted as a key pathway through which the gut microbiota may influence mood, behavior, and emotional regulation. To systematically review current scientific literature on the relationship between gut microbiota and adolescent mental health, as well as the potential of dietary interventions. A systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar with keywords including “gut–brain axis,” “microbiota,” “mental health,” “adolescent,” and “nutrition.” Eligible studies were original articles or systematic reviews published in the past ten years, in English, and focused on individuals aged 10–24. A total of 28 articles met the inclusion criteria. Most studies found significant links between gut microbiota composition and psychiatric symptoms such as anxiety and depression. Interventions using probiotics, prebiotics, and traditional fermented foods showed potential in reducing stress and improving emotional well-being. Gut microbiota plays a crucial role in regulating adolescent mental health. Dietary interventions using locally available fermented foods such as tempeh and dadiah may serve as effective preventive strategies.

Abstract

Antihistamines are widely used as first-line therapy for allergic skin disorders such as urticaria, dermatitis, and pruritus. Understanding their pharmacological mechanisms, classification, and safety profiles is essential for effective clinical application, particularly for long-term use and during pregnancy. This article is a narrative review based on scientific literature from national and international databases (PubMed, Scopus, SINTA), focusing on pharmacology, classification, clinical indications, contraindications, adverse effects, and safety of antihistamines in pregnancy. Antihistamines act as inverse agonists at histamine receptors, primarily H1 and H2. First-generation agents are lipophilic, crossing the blood–brain barrier and causing sedation, while second-generation antihistamines act selectively on peripheral receptors with fewer central nervous system side effects. During pregnancy, cetirizine and loratadine are recommended due to favorable safety profiles compared to first-generation drugs. In dermatology, antihistamines are effective in managing urticaria, angioedema, lichen simplex chronicus, mastocytosis, and various allergic skin conditions. The selection of antihistamines should be guided by pharmacokinetics, side effect profile, patient-specific conditions, and pregnancy safety. Second-generation antihistamines are generally preferred for long-term management owing to their efficacy and reduced central nervous system risk.

Abstract

Hypertension is a major risk factor for global cardiovascular disease, and non-pharmacological interventions are increasingly considered in its management. Young coconut water (Cocos nucifera)—a natural beverage rich in potassium and other minerals—is often used by the public as an alternative therapy due to its affordability and safety. This narrative review aims to evaluate the latest literature evidence (2019–2024) on the effect of regular consumption of young coconut water on lowering blood pressure in hypertensive patients. A literature search was conducted in PubMed and Google Scholar databases using the keywords “hypertension” and “young coconut water” (including publications published between 2019–2024). The selected articles were reviewed qualitatively. Several experimental/quasi-experimental studies reported significant reductions in systolic (SBP) and/or diastolic (DDBP) blood pressure after consuming 150–300 ml of young coconut water per day for 1–6 weeks. The mean BP decreased from 145.8 to 135.3 mmHg (p=0.0002) and DBP from 93.7 to 86.9 mmHg (p<0.00001) in the intervention group compared to the control group. The mechanism of this decrease is associated with the high potassium content and diuretic effect of young coconut water, which increases sodium excretion and suppresses the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS). Regular consumption of young coconut water is effective in helping lower blood pressure in hypertensive patients, with the advantages of low cost and a good safety profile. These findings support the potential of young coconut water as a non-pharmacological adjunct therapy in the management of hypertension.

Abstract

University students face various psychological challenges, one of which is anxiety. Anxiety can interfere with their academic performance and daily activities. Non-pharmacological therapies, such as aromatherapy, have been explored as potential treatments for reducing anxiety. This study employs a literature review approach to examine the impact of aromatherapy on anxiety reduction among university students. Articles were collected using Google Scholar, following the PICO-S framework. The review included studies published in the last five years in Indonesian, focusing on the effects of aromatherapy on anxiety in students. A total of six studies were selected, and all indicated that aromatherapy had a significant effect in reducing anxiety levels in university students. Essential oils such as lavender and peppermint were commonly used and showed positive outcomes. Aromatherapy is an effective non-pharmacological intervention for anxiety, providing an alternative to pharmacological treatments. The results suggest that essential oils can help alleviate the stress and anxiety caused by academic pressures, with lavender and peppermint being particularly effective. Further research is recommended to explore the long-term effects and other essential oils in this context. Aromatherapy has been proven to be an effective therapy for reducing anxiety in university students, offering a natural, side-effect-free alternative to medication.

Abstract

The Family Planning (FP) program aims to control population growth and improve family welfare. Despite the government's subsidized FP services, participation from low-income households in Padang City remains limited. The demand for FP services among low-income households is hindered by various factors, with economic conditions being the primary obstacle. This article employs a literature review approach to analyze the factors influencing the demand for the FP program among low-income households in Padang City. Data were collected from various sources, including journal articles, government reports, and previous research relevant to this topic. The analysis was conducted by organizing the findings into key themes: economic, social, cultural factors, and government policies. Economic factors were identified as the primary barrier to access for low-income households to FP services. Indirect costs such as transportation and limited healthcare facilities were significant obstacles. Additionally, social and cultural factors, including community norms that place value on having many children, further hindered the adoption of the FP program. Although government policies have provided subsidies, they have not been fully effective due to a lack of understanding regarding the variety of contraceptive methods available. The findings suggest that, although various policies have been implemented, the challenges faced by low-income households in Padang City are more complex and require a more holistic approach. To increase participation, more inclusive policies are needed that consider social and cultural factors, along with improving the accessibility of FP services in remote areas.
