Abstract

Abstract

Writing skills are seen as a difficult skill, this is based on the fact that the writing process requires the involvement of many skills at once, including reading, writing, thinking and reasoning about the object that will be the topic of the writing, based on this, this article will discuss and present the results of a literature study regarding the impact of the physical environment of schools on the descriptive text writing skills of elementary school students. The findings obtained from this review of research results indicate that the physical environment of schools presents great potential for pedagogical applications, especially as a resource to facilitate the teaching of descriptive texts in elementary education. The real school environment, including architectural structures, infrastructure provisions, botanical elements, and various phenomena that can be observed near students, plays an important role in providing a contextual, empirically verifiable, and meaningful learning environment. This direct experience engagement fosters a strong stimulus for students, encouraging sharp observation, sensory perception, and concrete information processing, thus empowering them to articulate their conceptualizations into clear and detailed descriptive text formats. Thus, the use of the school's physical environment as a learning resource in descriptive text learning is in line with the demands of the 2025 National Curriculum which emphasizes contextual learning, strengthening literacy, and developing students' productive language skills.

Abstract

Students’ ability to write procedural texts at the elementary school level remains relatively low, particularly in organizing steps systematically, understanding text structure, and applying appropriate language features. This condition indicates the need for contextual and meaningful instructional innovation. This study aims to analyze the use of packaging media as an alternative instructional medium to improve elementary students’ procedural text writing skills. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach using a library research design. Data were collected through a systematic review of relevant scholarly journals, books, and academic sources published within the last ten years. Data analysis was conducted using content analysis and comprehensive synthesis of previous research findings. The results indicate that packaging media possess authentic, contextual, and multimodal characteristics aligned with the structure of procedural texts, including objectives, materials, and sequential steps. Previous studies also demonstrate that the use of concrete and visual media enhances students’ understanding of text structure, ability to organize steps logically and systematically, as well as learning motivation and participation. Therefore, packaging media have strong potential as an innovative and effective instructional medium for improving elementary students’ procedural writing skills

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of descriptive writing skills among elementary school students, particularly in terms of idea development, paragraph organization, and spelling accuracy, as identified through a preliminary study in the fourth grade at SDN Pasirjaya. The learning environment, which is still oriented toward final results without focusing on the writing process, has resulted in students being unable to write systematically and elaboratively. This study aims to analyze the need to develop the RANI (Readiness, Analyze, Name, Interpret) Learning Model as the basis for designing a process-based writing learning model. The research used a qualitative approach with a preliminary study design (needs analysis). Data sources included 28 fourth-grade students and 12 teachers at SDN Pasirjaya, with data collection techniques in the form of diagnostic tests, learning observations, interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed descriptively through reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that 43% of students were in the category of adequate writing ability, 29% were poor, and only 28% were good, with an average score of 68. These findings indicate the need for a structured, explicit, and process-based learning model as the basis for developing the RANI Model in the next stage of research.
