Abstract

Elementary schools in Jakarta face gaps in science learning resources, resulting in uneven and often theoretical practical experiences for students. Virtual laboratories offer a pathway toward equity, yet poorly structured designs can trigger cognitive overload and undermine learning. This study examines how a virtual lab optimized with cognitive load theory—the Cognitive Load–Optimized Virtual Lab (CLOVL)—influences fifth graders’ conceptual understanding of heat transfer in six elementary schools (three central and three suburban) in Jakarta. Using an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, we involved 120 students and 12 science teachers. The experimental group used CLOVL, which incorporated five-minute segments, pre-training of key vocabulary, narrative–visual modalities, and personalization through culturally Indonesian avatars. The control group used a conventional virtual lab. Quantitative data consisted of pre- and post-tests, an adapted cognitive load scale, and eye-tracking for a sub-sample (n = 40). Qualitative data were gathered from teacher interviews, classroom observations, and student focus groups. Results indicated higher conceptual understanding in the CLOVL group (normalized gain ⟨g⟩ = 0.52) compared to the control group (⟨g⟩ = 0.23), with a large standardized effect size (Hedges’ g ≈ 1.20), particularly in suburban schools, where gains were approximately 45% greater than in central schools. Integrative analyses showed shorter fixation durations and a higher proportion of gaze directed toward relevant areas. These findings support the application of cognitive load principles and underscore the role of cultural relevance in virtual lab design for urban Indonesian settings, while highlighting the theoretical, practical, and policy implications for further research.

Abstract

Untung Jawa Island in the Thousand Islands has excellent potential for developing family-based marine tourism, including beaches, mangrove ecotourism, and fishing activities that are attractive to both local and international tourists. However, the low digital literacy of the community is a significant obstacle to optimizing tourism promotion and boosting the local economy. This condition leads to the community's dependence on external agents and limits the competitiveness of Untung Jawa Island as a tourist destination compared to other tourist islands in the Thousand Islands. Therefore, this Community Service activity aims to enhance the digital literacy capacity of tourism managers, fishermen, and local artisans through training on creating promotional content, utilizing social media, and managing sustainable family tourism packages. The implementation method uses a participatory approach, including coordination, training, mentoring, and evaluation stages. The activity intervention also includes the installation of eight fish aggregating devices (FADs) as family-friendly fishing spots and a means of restoring fish habitats degraded due to coral reef damage. The results of the activity show an improvement in participants' skills in creating digital content (photos, videos, and promotional narratives), the formation of a local creative group called Digital Ranger, and increased community involvement in online tourism promotion. In conclusion, the synergy between physical innovation through the development of marine tourism facilities and the strengthening of digital literacy can empower communities in managing tourism destinations. The novelty of this activity lies in the integration between the installation of artificial reefs as an ecotourism innovation and community-based digital literacy training, making Untung Jawa Island a model for developing competitive and sustainable coastal digital tourism villages.

Abstract

The Industrial Revolution 4.0 has brought great changes in the world of education, including in the Islamic boarding school environment which has been relying on classical learning methods based on the yellow book. The gap in the use of information and communication technology (ICT) has caused pesantren to face challenges in preparing students to be able to compete in the digital era. The STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) approach is a solution that can be applied to improve the quality of learning in Islamic boarding schools without eliminating traditional values. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach at the Tri Bhakti Attaqwa Rama Puja Raman North Islamic Boarding School, East Lampung to explore the application of STEAM in the classical system. Data collection techniques were carried out through direct observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies, which were then analyzed by thematic analysis methods. The results show that the integration of STEAM in Islamic boarding school learning can improve 21st century skills, including critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving. However, there are challenges in its implementation, such as the limitations of digital infrastructure, low technological literacy among students and teaching staff, and the need for special training for teachers in implementing STEAM. Therefore, an adaptation strategy is needed that maintains classical methods but still accommodates the use of technology in learning. This study provides recommendations for Islamic boarding schools to develop learning models that are more innovative and adaptive to the times

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of Work–Life Integration (WLI) and work initiative on the performance of elementary school teachers, with job satisfaction serving as a mediating variable. Employing an explanatory quantitative approach, the study used a survey method involving 240 elementary school teachers in West Kalimantan. Data were collected using a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed through Structural Equation Modeling using PLS-SEM (version 4). The results indicate that WLI has a positive and significant effect on job satisfaction but does not have a significant direct effect on teachers’ performance. In contrast, work initiative exerts a positive and significant effect on both job satisfaction and teachers’ performance. Furthermore, job satisfaction is found to have a positive and significant effect on teachers’ performance, fully mediating the relationship between WLI and performance and partially mediating the relationship between work initiative and performance. These findings strengthen Boundary Theory, Proactive Behavior Theory, Herzberg’s Motivation Theory, and Human Capital Theory. From a practical perspective, the study highlights that improving teachers’ performance requires supportive school policies that foster healthy work–life integration and promote a sustainable culture of work initiative.

Abstract

Social skills are a key component of a child’s development both personally and academically, as they enable them to communicate, cooperate, and resolve conflicts. The advancement of these skills through education has differing approaches, but participation in sports is widely accepted to promote social relations and collaboration. Nevertheless, there is little scientific research on the degree to which organised sports activities facilitate social skills development in children. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of sports participation on the social skills of elementary students by measuring their communication, teamwork, conflict resolution, and leadership skills. A quasi-experimental approach was implemented with 70 elementary school students, half of whom participated in structured sports activities while the other half did not. Group 1 was the experimental class that actively participated in the organised sports while group 2 served as the control class. Information was gathered through self-report questionnaires, observational checklists, and peer interaction evaluation. To identify significant differences between two sets of measurements made before and after interventions, a paired t-test was performed. The results showed that learners in the experimental group had greater improvements in communication (+1.2 points, p = 0.003), teamwork (+1.5 points, p = 0.002), and conflict resolution (+1.1 points, p = 0.004) than the control group which had no improvements (p > 0.05). The observational data also revealed that the sports participants showed higher involvement, leadership, and teamwork. These results imply that organised sports can be used as an important tool to enhance social skills among elementary school students.

Abstract

This study seeks to evaluate how gamification affects student motivation, engagement, and learning in an online Physical Education course at Universitas Terbuka. A sample of 40 out of 240 students enrolled in the 4th semester of the program was drawn using purposive sampling. The participants responded to a 12-item acknowledgment scale measuring four aspects of gamification: motivational aspects of games, participation and engagement, skills, and overall learning experiences. Based on the analysis of the data collected, findings point out that gamification positively affects student motivation and participation. A significant number of students (92.5%) agreed that new activities based on games made learning processes more enjoyable, and 90% of students said that gamification lessened the boredom encountered in online learning. Although underperforming students were able to increase their understanding of theoretical concepts taught in class, there was a lack of improvement in the performance of some students who were active in independent physical skill practice with only 75% agreeing that the tasks fostered the development of independent physical skills. Most of the students supported the continuation of gamification in the Physical Education course and 95% wanted the inclusion of more game-oriented learning in future lessons. The results indicate that although gamification increases motivation and participation, other strategies are needed to develop practical skills in the context of online Physical Education classes.

Abstract

Humans are social beings where social behavior must be instilled early on or at elementary school level, when children enter elementary school their social behavior with others will be seen, this is because before entering elementary school children are in a community environment that influences children's social behavior in a negative direction so that it is carried over to their school environment. Such as fighting with friends, isolating friends, saying dirty words, inciting friends in a bad direction. One way to instill social behavior in children is through traditional sports games, because in traditional sports games it requires communication, and cooperation between individuals which may have an impact on children's social behavior. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with teachers and students as research subjects, this study was conducted in 4 Elementary Schools in Mataram Baru Village, Mataram Baru District, East Lampung Regency. Because these schools are based on learning that forms their students to have good behavior, the subjects in this study were the principal, student representatives, class teachers, physical education teachers or instructors and students. The data collection techniques used were observation, interviews and documentation. While data analysis through three techniques, namely data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. And checking the validity of the data is done by triangulation and source triangulation
