Abstract

This study analyzes the effect of board characteristics as a corporate governance mechanism on corporate performance with ownership concentration as a moderating variable. We conduct this study because there are still rarely studies that examine the effect of board characteristics on corporate performance by adding ownership concentration as a moderating variable. This study uses a sample of manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) for the 2013-2017 period with 350 observations. In this study, the characteristics of the board are proxied by the proportion of independent commissioners and the board commissioners’ size. Corporate performance is proxied by return on assets (ROA). By using multiple linear regression analysis, we found that the proportion of independent commissioners and the board commissioners’ size have a significant positive effect on ROA. Other results of this study indicate that the concentration of ownership significantly weakens the positive effect of the proportion of independent commissioners and the board commissioners’ size on corporate performance. Panel data analysis uses the company's annual financial statements which were tested using logistic regression. The results of the study found the fact that profitability, cash reserves, operating cash flow and firm size had a positive and significant effect on the probability of a company paying dividends. Abstract

Company's investment activities in Indonesia experienced significant fluctuations. Companies make the investments in order to enhance shareholder value. In connection with investment decision-making, company should consider the internal conditions, such as the condition of the company's bank debt or leverage conditions. Moreover, before making an investment decision, the company should consider the investment opportunities (growth opportunity). This study aims to identify the effect of leverage on investment and whether a company that has low growth opportunity has lower investment. This is seen by adding moderating variable-growth opportunity in leverage effect on investment, which is proxied by Tobin's Q and sales growth. The samples used were non-financial companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in 2009 through 2013. The regression results showed significant negative effect of leverage on investment. This means that the leverage gives a negative impact on investment, the higher the leverage makes the investment lower. This happens because the bank debt raises investment restrictions on companies, thus higher bank debt will strengthen the restrictions on the investments made by the bank. Moderation model, of growth opportunity proxied by Tobin's Q and Sales Growth, weakens the negative effect of leverage on investments in companies with low growth opportunity. This means, companies with low growth opportunities has weaker negative influence of leverage on the investment. This is because, companies that have low growth opportunity, have a lower profitable investment projects, so restrictions on investments made by the bank or keditor are looser.

Abstract

Many previous studies have shown that the number of CEOs holds MBA is still low and less dominating. We analyze the effect of CEOs with MBA degree on funding decision, investment decision and firm performance. Using 38 manufacturing companies that listed on Indonesia stock exchange during 2010-2017 analyzed with multiple linear regression. We find that CEOs with MBA degree significantly have lower interest-bearing debt, higher capital expenditure and higher return on asset than companies with non-MBA CEOs. These research results provide information to shareholders and management of manufacturing companies to consider and provide equal opportunities to hire MM-MBA CEOs.

Abstract

This research examined the effect of stock liquidity on the propensity to pay dividend for 254 Indonesian public listed firms during the period of l 2011 and 2015. Stock liquidity implies transparency level and serves as market monitor for management performance in using the cash flow. Furthermore, this research examines the impact of stock liquidity on dividend payment in the presence of agency conflicts using agency proxies, wedge and government ownership. This paper employed multivariate probit regression. The baseline model has controlled for time in-variant and industry sectors. Robustness checks are employed to present consistent result for other stock liquidity measures. The results confirm the predicted dividend model outcome and prove the contradiction in dividend signaling theory.

Abstract

Banking market concentration is an interesting banking topic to study because the banking market structure plays an important role in a country's banking system. This study aims to determine the relationship between banking market concentration and bank risk taking, and bank capital as a moderating variable on the relationship between bank capital and bank risk taking. The test was conducted using multiple linear regression on 104 conventional commercial banks in Indonesia from 2007 to 2016. The results of this study indicate that banking market concentration has a positive effect on bank risk-taking, and bank capital weakens the positive effect of bank market concentration on bank risk-taking.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of institutional ownership on dividend initiation with newly appointed CEO holding a role as a moderating variable in non-financial companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange. This research used a logistic regression model and Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA). The data were obtained from the public company's Financial Report and Annual Report published in the 2012-2017 period. Dividend initiation is the dependent variable measured using dummy variable, and institutional ownership is the independent variable proxied by the percentage of shares held by institutional investors. Newly appointed CEO is the moderating variable. The result shows that institutional ownership has a significant positive effect on dividend initiation and the newly appointed CEO strengthens the positive effect of institutional ownership on dividend initiation. It is advisable that the companies should improve their corporate governance’s quality by increasing the degree on institutional ownership.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of research and development expenditure on the company's financial performance and prove the influence of corporate age moderation. The research population consisting of 140 manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange was selected using the purposive sampling method. The final sample size is 113 companies that provide annual financial statements from 2012-2017. The unbalanced panel data analysis uses variables in the company's annual reports that are tested using OLS regression. The results found that companies investing in R&D experienced a 3% increase in sales compared to companies that did not spend in R&D. Further testing also found that the age of the company moderated the relationship between R&D expenditure and financial performance, where older companies that invest in R&D produced 0.1% more sales and 0.6% higher profits than younger companies in the manufacturing industry. The conclusion of this study is that the effect of R&D expenditure on sales and net profit cannot be directly felt in the current year. R&D spending like other types of investment requires time to be able to contribute to the company's sales and net profit. The findings of this study provide support that R&D spending is a driving force for innovation in endogenous growth theories.
