Abstract

Burns are a serious injury that requires effective therapy to accelerate the healing process. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of 25% ethanol extract of areca nut (Areca catechu L.) on healing second-degree burns in male white rats (Rattus norvegicus). The extract was obtained through a maceration method and characterized for its secondary metabolite content. A total of 25 rats were divided into five groups: a negative control (Vaseline flavum), a positive control (Bioplacenton®), and three treatment groups with extract concentrations of 2%, 4%, and 6%. The topical preparation was applied daily for 21 days, then clinical observations were carried out in the form of wound diameter measurements and histopathological analysis (re-epithelialization, collagenization, angiogenesis, and the number of fibroblasts). Phytochemical results showed that the extract contained flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, phenols, and steroids. Clinically, the treatment group with a concentration of 6% showed the greatest reduction in wound diameter (56.6%) compared to the low concentration extract group and the negative control, although not exceeding the positive control. Histological analysis showed more even re-epithelialization, increased fibroblasts, and a more organized collagen fiber arrangement in the 6% group. These findings indicate that a 25% ethanol extract of areca nut has the potential to accelerate burn wound healing through antioxidant, antimicrobial, astringent, and anti-inflammatory mechanisms, although its effectiveness is still below standard therapy. Further research is needed to optimize the dosage and formulation for its development as an affordable, natural-based alternative phytotherapy.

Abstract

Background: Wound care can involve both chemical and natural substances to accelerate the healing process. Aloe vera is known for its wound-healing properties due to the presence of saponins. Similarly, sambung nyawa leaves aid in wound healing because they contain flavonoids. Combining extracts from aloe vera and sambung nyawa is expected to enhance the healing process. Gel formulations are advantageous as they allow for prolonged drug contact with the wound and protect it from external contamination. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effect of varying concentrations of Carbopol 940 as a gelling agent on the physical properties and stability of the gel, as well as to assess the effectiveness of the gel in promoting the healing of excision wounds.Methodology: The method used in this study is experimental. The gel formulations consist of four formulas with varying concentrations of sambung nyawa leaf extract and Carbopol. Evaluation of the gel's physical properties includes organoleptic tests, homogeneity, spreadability, adhesiveness, pH, viscosity, and stability tests. The excision wound healing test was conducted on mice using six treatment groups. The observed parameter was the percentage of wound healing. Data analysis was performed descriptively and statistically using One-Way ANOVA.Results: The evaluation results of the formulation showed that the developed formula met the standards for physical properties and stability. The best wound-healing effectiveness was observed in treatment group 4, which contained 4% ethanol extract of aloe vera, 5% sambung nyawa leaves, and 2% Carbopol 940.Conclusion: The variation in Carbopol 940 concentration affects the physical properties and stability of the gel formulation. The effectiveness of excision wound healing indicates that higher concentrations of sambung nyawa leaf extract result in better wound-healing efficacy.

Abstract

Rhaphidophora pinnata leaves are one of the herbal plants that have pharmacological effects. Previous research has shown that ekor naga leaves contain secondary metabolites with tonic pharmacological effects, including the ability to heal cut wounds, as well as antihyperglycemic and antidiabetic properties. This research aims to demonstrate the potential of ekor naga leaf extract as a gastroprotective agent. The extract was evaluated using standard methods, including determination of water content, ash content, phytochemical screening, and compound identification by LC-MS. Gastroprotective testing was carried out by dividing the treatment group into six groups, including the Group 1: normal group, Group 2: negative control (Sodium CMC 0.5%), Group 3: positive control (Sucralfate), Group 4: 125mg/KgBW extract, Group 5: 250 mg/KgBW extract, and Group 6: 500mg/KgBW extract. The results of the observations were in the form of gastric ulcer severity scores and histological images of the gastric organs. Gastroprotective testing revealed significant differences between the treatment groups and the negative control group (p<0.05). The 500 mg/kgBW extract exhibited the most effective gastroprotective effect, with a 42.5% inhibition rate and minimal inflammation observed both macroscopically and microscopically. These results suggest that ethanol extract from ekor naga leaves may serve as an alternative or complementary therapy for gastritis.
