Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the trend and scope of strengthening literacy in biology learning over four decades that will make a valuable contribution to the biology learning in all educational levels. This study employed a systematic literature review (SLR) method adapted from the PRISMA model. This SLR obtained several interesting findings. It was found that the theme of biology and literacy reached its peak in 2023. We found two main countries to focus on, namely the United States and Indonesia. Biology and its learning are synonymous with scientific/science literacy. Other types of literacy that are widely promoted by researchers are information literacy, quantitative literacy, health literacy, visual literacy, computer literacy, three-dimensional literacy, reading literacy, media literacy, assessment literacy, epigenetic literacy, digital literacy, and environmental literacy. In the Indonesian context, we suggest that biology learning needs to be oriented towards strengthening the literacy aspects-science literacy, information literacy, quantitative literacy, health literacy, visual literacy, computer literacy, three-dimensional literacy, reading literacy, media literacy, assessment literacy, epigenetic literacy, digital literacy, and environmental literacy-found in SLR because each of them has an urgency.

Abstract

Comprehensive exams are administered to assess the abilities and knowledge of students in their respective scientific disciplines. However, the material's scope is quite extensive, particularly in light of the absence of a question bank or grid-based guide. However, advancements in the twenty-first century necessitate that educators possess not only knowledge of subject matter and the learning process but also proficiency in technology. TPACK (Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge) refers to the amalgamation of stated components. The objective of this research is to develop a valid and practical question bank for biology education comprehensive exam, utilizing the TPACK framework. Research and development (R&D) was employed in accordance with the ADDIE development model. The instruments were validation sheets to determine the validity of the developed question bank and response questionnaires to assess its practicality. The validation sheet was intended for experts in learning evaluation and TPACK, whereas the response questionnaire was intended for students and examining lecturers who delivered comprehensive exams. The research findings indicated that the TPACK-based comprehensive exam question bank that was created exhibited a very high level of validity, as confirmed by 87.92% of learning evaluation experts and 88.69% of TPACK experts. The practicality test yielded a 91.68% passing rate among the examining lecturers and a 96.04% passing rate among the students. This value falls under the category of being extremely practical. Hence, it can be inferred that the developed question bank possesses validity and utility. This question bank aims to assist in preparing comprehensive exams for both students and lecturers, while also serving as a guide for developing TPACK, specifically designed for graduating students in the biology education program

Abstract

Integrating the 21st-century skills into Indonesia’s education system is crucial for equipping students to face future challenges. This study investigates the knowledge of pre-service biology teachers in Indonesia regarding the 21st -century skills and their understanding of instructional models that support skill development. Conducted from March to September 2024, the research employed a cross-sectional survey design with a total sampling technique, involving 78 students from a Biology Education program at a public Islamic university in North Sumatra, all of whom had completed a course on biology learning strategies. Data were gathered using questionnaires and analyzed quantitatively to determine key trends. The findings indicate that although most students recognize the significance of the 21st-century skills in biology education, their understanding is limited. Only a small number could identify all essential skills, with creative thinking being the most recognized. Students were well-acquainted with project-based learning as a model for developing these skills but had limited knowledge of the structure and application of other instructional models, such as discovery and inquiry learning. These findings emphasize the need for curriculum improvement to deepen students’ comprehension of various instructional models and the integration of diverse information sources, enabling more effective integration of the 21st -century skills into biology education.

Abstract

Lowlands such as peat swamps have specific, limited conditions that play a role in storing the world's main carbon, one of the plants that adapts is Nepenthes. This is important considering that peatlands in Indonesia face the threat of deforestation, while Nepenthes is a protected plant. So it is important to know the type and characteristics of Nepenthes in that location. Kampar Regency is an undulating area with lowland swamps. The research was conducted in August 2023, using a purposive sampling exploration method at locations considered to have potential. The samples found were recorded for habitat characteristics (altitude, temperature and coordinates) and photographed and collected (herbarium) for observation of their morphological characteristics. The results of the study found 3 types, namely N. gracilis, N. ampullaria, N. mirabilis, classified as lowland Nepenthes. The Nepenthes found were at 94-131 meters above sea level with a temperature range of 27-33 C. The morphological characteristics of Nepenthes are generally the same as similar characters in other areas. There are concerns about ecological disruption to the remaining lowland Nepenthes habitat in Koto Kampar. Therefore, this research is expected to be complementary data on biodiversity information in Riau, especially in the lowlands of Koto Kampar District.
