Abstract

The Class II Bengkulu Juvenile Correctional Facility is the only rehabilitation center in Bengkulu Province that provides guidance and development for children and adolescents who have committed criminal offenses. The institution focuses on character building and equipping its residents with skills that can be utilized after their release. Therefore, this community service activity aims to develop English literacy among the children at this facility. As an international language, English literacy is considered essential for these children, as it provides them with the opportunity to acquire foreign language skills—specifically English—which they may have missed or been unable to complete during their formal education. Consequently, the children are expected to gain foreign language competence and the ability to communicate in English. Moreover, English proficiency can open up future job opportunities once they have completed their rehabilitation period. The implementation of this community service activity involved several strategies, including structured classes, interactive learning, and the introduction of digital literacy. The program was attended by 20 resident children. The learning materials provided were still at a very basic level, such as the English alphabet, self-introduction, and identification of everyday objects and daily activities. Overall, this community service activity showed significant results, as indicated by improvements in participants’ English competence based on post-test scores. Thus, it can be concluded that the activity has made a positive contribution and provided tangible benefits for the children at the Class II Bengkulu Juvenile Correctional Facility.

This paper analyzed psychological conflict reflected by Margaret as the main character on Big Eyes movie and Margaret‘s personality in facing her psychological conflict. The theoritical framework of analysis was Psychoanalytic approach by Sigmud Freud. Based on the result of data analysis, it was found that there were two kinds of psychological conflicts faced by the main character, Margaret, they are pressure and unconfident. Margaret got pressures from her husband because she knew everything about her husband’s popularity and his untruth. Margaret felt unconfident because she had not rational thinking. She trusted her husband’s saying too much, so her husband dominated her easily.

Abstract

Film is a kind of social communication that can be made base on the social reality that exists in and around the setting in which it is set. This study aims to examine the moral values in the movie Ayla: The Daughter of War. The content analysis method was employed in this study. Primary and secondary data are the two categories of data used in this study. The key information gleaned straight from the movie Ayla the Daughter of War is known as primary data. secondary data included documents, journals, and other sources of information that could help with the study. This study employs two methods to collect data: documentation procedures and observation approaches. This study used Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis to gain a more precise understanding of the symbols and significance of the ethical lesson conveyed in the movie Ayla: The Daughter of War. The finding showed that there are eight moral values—humanity, helping each other, tolerance, brave, responsible, love and affection, human connections to God, and keeping promises—were identified by researchers in this movie. It can be concluded that there are numerous moral lessons and prerequisites for the meaning of the film. This movie shows that despite differences in racial, cultural, and religious backgrounds, empathy, love, and compassion can still exist. Aside from that, this movie also teaches that love and affection can arise from an honest heart regardless of a person's biological link to another person.

Abstract

This study used to analyze semiotics based on Roland Barthes' theory in Samantha King's poem titled "Perfect". The poem "Perfect" was selected for analysis because to its profound and intricate meanings, as well as its utilization of symbols to convey concealed significance and messages. The study used qualitative method  to find out semiotic analysis in the poem. Therefore the research aimed to find out the denotation, connotation and myth meaning based on Roland Barthes theory. The result showed  that the semiotic analysis of "Perfect" reveals how the poem critiques societal myths of perfection and identity. The denotative meaning revealed emotional struggles and self-imperfection, while the connotative meanings focused on the search for acceptance and healing. Barthes’ theory of myth showed how cultural norms of success and failure shape identity, leading to feelings of inadequacy and isolation. The poem is not only encouraged self-acceptance but also it is emphasizing that embracing imperfection is key to healing and self-discovery.

Abstract

Abstract The key work in the issue of women's rights, individuality, and sisterly love in the 19th century, Louisa May Alcott's Little Women (1868–1869), follows three sisters' following their dreams while facing societal norms during the Civil War: Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy. The novel critiques strict gender roles via Jo March, who challenges norms by becoming a writer, highlighting Alcott's feminist view. This paper examines Little Women’s relevance today through adaptations, particularly Greta Gerwig's 2019 film, reflecting current cultural values. Thematic shifts in the approaches to feminism, family, and social norms are discussed in the paper. Each adaptation represents its sociohistorical context, from conservatism in the 1933 film to the feminist critique so bodily expressed by Gerwig. The conclusion confirms the status of Little Women as an active cultural reference of continuous debates on women's independence, equity, and identity. Alcott's story about how one sisterly family struggles through to success and self-determination really denotes an emerging feminist discourse. Little Women is such an important document in helping to shape emerging feminist discussions that it manages to be a part of both literature and culture.

Abstract

This qualitative study investigated the rhetorical structure of discussion sections in undergraduate theses, addressing a notable gap in research concerning specific institutional contexts and the need to examine the source of guidance and references utilized. The objectives of this study were to identify the rhetorical moves and steps employed by students, to explore how these patterns evolved across academic years (2020-2024), and to analyze the sources of guidance and references used. A corpus of 35 undergraduate theses from IAIN Curup's English Tadris study program was subjected to manual text analysis using the Loan & Pramoolsook (2015) framework. Further insights were gathered through semi-structured interviews with seven students who have graduated, with data analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that fundamental rhetorical moves, such as Move 2 (Reporting Results), were consistently obligatory. However, significant absence and trend to be optional were observed in higher-order analytical and evaluative moves, with crucial steps within Move 4 (Commenting on Results) often being optional, and Move 5 (Summarizing the Study), Move 6 (Evaluating the Study), and Move 7 (Deductions from the Study) rarely incorporated. Furthermore, the study identified that students primarily relied on previous theses and supervisor feedback for guidance. Formal institutional resources, such as the guideline book and academic writing classes, were underutilized. This suggests a need for more targeted pedagogical interventions to encourage advanced rhetorical competence in undergraduate thesis writing among students in the English Tadris study program at IAIN Curup. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of compound words on the @PopBase X account in 2024. Using a qualitative approach and the theory of Delahunty and Garvey (2010), this study focuses on identifying three types of compound words: endocentric, exocentric, and copulative. Data were collected from @PopBase tweets throughout 2024, specifically those related to entertainment news and pop culture. The findings of the study revealed that endocentric compounds dominated the data, with terms such as soundtrack and fanbase being the most frequently used. Exocentric compounds, such as box office and blockbuster, and copulative compounds, such as singer-songwriter and action comedy, also appeared but were less frequent. The study also found that most of the compounds had transparent meanings and the compounds in the posts functioned as nouns. These findings suggest that the use of compound words on @PopBase helps facilitate concise and engaging communication, especially in the fast-paced digital environment of platform X. This study contributes to the understanding of word formation in X application and highlights the evolving role of morphology in online entertainment communication.

Abstract

English non-native speaker (NNS) hosts in television broadcasting often face communicative pressures where maintaining fluency, accuracy, and audience engagement is critical. These challenges require the use of compensatory strategies, that is, techniques to overcome gaps in linguistic proficiency and sustain interaction. This study investigates the linguistic and non-linguistic communication strategies employed by NNS hosts on SEA Today TV across two formats: talk shows (TS) and on-location interviews (OL). Using a mixed-methods content analysis, 20 purposively selected broadcast episodes (2021–2025) were examined to represent program variety and host diversity. Data were coded using an adapted version of Farrahi’s (2011) taxonomy, with 20% of the corpus double-coded; inter-rater reliability (Cohen’s κ TS = 1.000; Cohen’s κ OL = 0.875) confirmed coding consistency. The findings identified two main groups of strategies (linguistic and non-linguistic) comprising sixteen subcategories, of which fourteen were observed. Eight strategies, including approximation, elaboration, and body gestures, emerged as a shared “core repertoire.” Contextual contrasts were also evident: talk shows displayed higher reliance on appeal for help and circumlocution due to their collaborative studio setting. At the same time, on-location interviews emphasized elaboration and environmental gestures in response to real-time unpredictability. These results demonstrate that NNS hosts flexibly adapt a stable repertoire of strategies to context-specific demands. Pedagogically, the results suggest that broadcaster training and English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) instruction should explicitly incorporate communication strategy practice. For instance, training modules could simulate on-location unpredictability to help hosts practise elaboration and approximation strategies, while studio-based exercises could focus on appeals for help and interactional alignment with co-hosts and guests. Such targeted activities would strengthen broadcasters’ strategic competence, enabling them to manage linguistic limitations more effectively in diverse communicative settings.
