Abstract

The focus of this research is a sociolinguistic examination of the impact of gender on language use. The primary goal of this research is to analyze the implications of men's and women's roles on their language usage. This research aims to highlight the variables that contribute to disparities in how gender impacts language use. This study's inquiry method is a questionnaire and audio-recoding. This study has shown differences in how men and women use language in our society and others like it. They use only some of the same forms; instead, they use different quantities or frequencies of the same form. In a society where gender plays a significant role, language is essential in contributing to that role. Gender roles, men's and women's identities, the hierarchical nature of gender relations, and men's dominance are all factors that contribute to differences in language use. Gender differentiation does not exist in a vacuum; it interacts with other types of social differentiation in a complex way. Language and gender, on the other hand, are formed through participation in everyday social activities. In conclusion, gender and language are inextricably linked.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine students' perceptions on the implementation of the learning process during the Covid 19 pandemic at the graduate program of English Education of the University of Bengkulu. This research was a descriptive research involving students in academic year of 2019/2020 from two classes consisting of 34 students. The data were taken using a questionnaire in the form of Google form consisting of 40 questions with 5 answer options: strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree, and strongly disagree and semi- structured written interview given through the Google Classroom application. The data obtained were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results of this research indicate that the students have a positive perception of the implementation of the learning process during the Covid19 pandemic the graduate program of English Education the University of Bengkulu with the average obtained score of 1211.25 which is in the good category. Moreover, the data obtained from the written interview showed that most students gave positive responses to online learning conducted at the graduate program of English education of the University of Bengkulu. These findings are expected to be taken into consideration to improve and prepare for the better future online and offline learning process at the University of Bengkulu, especially at the Graduate Program of English Education of the University of Bengkulu.

Abstract

Online learning is a new paradigm in the world of education. Not only theory in class but online learning is also carried out practical in classes. One example is in the Electronics Practicum course. However, effective online learning in practicum courses during the Covid-19 Pandemic has never been known, especially in the Electrical Engineering Study Program at the University of Bengkulu. This study aims to find the effectiveness of online learning in electronics practicum courses. The research method used is a quantitative descriptive method with a research design model using the concept of A/B design. Data was collected through a questionnaire and analyzed using the theory of effective value range. The results show that online learning in practicum courses has been effective. The results of questionnaires from students with positive scores ≥ 61 – 100. Thus, it can conclude that online learning for practicum courses is effective.

Abstract

Background: Writing anxiety became a tenacious factor hindering EFL students’ proficiency, specifically at the higher education level. In the Indonesian context, undergraduate and graduate students face a high demand to complete their studies. Writing a thesis is one of the requirements for graduation at the undergraduate level. Meanwhile, the graduate students must write a research article for publication as another requirement. Those things become a contributing factor to students feeling anxious in writing. A bulk of studies investigated the writing anxiety around the world. However, a few studies examine how gender and academic level differentiate the English language education study program students’ writing anxiety in Indonesia. This present study uncovers: 1) types and levels of writing anxiety among the groups, 2) variation of writing anxiety based on gender and academic levels, and 3) reasons affecting writing anxiety. Methodology: A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design was deployed in this study. The sample was 112 students, including 58 undergraduates and 54 graduates, of the English language education study program at a state university in Bengkulu, Indonesia. Two different data collection methods were implemented: an online survey and an on-site focus-group discussion (FGD). The second language writing anxiety inventory (SLWAI) and the second language writing reason inventory (SLWARI) were derived into fifty-eight items of a questionnaire utilized to obtain quantitative data. Meanwhile, the qualitative data were assembled using four main leading questions to probe students’ thoughts in identifying the factors contributing to anxiety. Quantitative data analysis was preceded by applying SPSS23, including descriptive and inferential statistical analyses. The qualitative data were analyzed through a directed qualitative content analysis (DQCA). Validity and reliability of data were ensured using methodological triangulation. Findings: Statistical analysis revealed that the majority of students, 92%, were at a moderate level of writing anxiety. Besides, cognitive anxiety became the first order of anxiety type experienced by the students. Moreover, the statistical findings presented that there is no significant difference in anxiety based on gender and academic level (  < 0.1). The qualitative analysis elucidated four patterns as contributing factors to the students’ writing anxiety, such as: time constraints, lack of ideas and knowledge, teachers’ teaching methods, and coursebook complexity. Conclusion: Both quantitative and qualitative analyses discovered that cognitive-affective aspects are more challenging for Indonesian students than demographic ones. Moreover, the personal challenges and instructional methods became noteworthy issues that contribute a lot to the emergence of anxiety when writing. Writing teachers need to design engaging and supportive learning environments in their instructional activities, for instance, by adapting a process-oriented writing approach and affording constructive feedback on students’ papers. These efforts can reduce students’ cognitive loads, thereby enhancing their self-efficacy in writing. Originality: The symptom-based SLWAI and the cause-based SLWARI are integrated simultaneously to disclose the writing anxiety experienced by undergraduate and graduate students in the Indonesian context. Additionally, this study implements a mixed-method approach to obtain plentiful, comprehensive data. Accordingly, a more vivid understanding of students’ anxiety in writing can be attained.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyze and describe the moral values in the film Up. This kind of study is qualitative research conducted in libraries. According to the findings, there are eight different types of character values: being gregarious or outgoing, accountable, inquisitive, creative, honest, considerate of others, and recognizing accomplishment. Students in elementary school can learn about this character value through character education. The main purpose to (1) describe the form of character values contained in the animated film Up. (2) determine the relevance of the character values contained in the animated film Up in relation to the character education of elementary school students.

Abstract

This study analyzed the category shift on the translation of nominal suffixes in English and their equivalents in Indonesian. The data are taken from the novel Little Women by Louisa May Alcott and the Indonesian version translated by Annisa Cinantya Putri. This study used a qualitative method while the category shift was analyzed using Hatim & Munday framework. The result of the research shows that there are three kinds of shift that occurred: Class-shift (the changes of word classes), Structure-shift (the initial headword in English becomes the final in Indonesian), and Unit-shift (the changes of rank). The English nominal suffixes that are found in the novel can be equivalent to Indonesian affixes (suffix, prefix, confix, affix) combination reduplication, word, and phrase.

Abstract

This research attempts to describe the rhetorical structures of Indonesian author's in the conclusion section of applied linguistics international journals articles. The method employed in this study is descriptive quantitative. Thirty RA conclusion sections were extracted from two international journals; the Indonesian Journal of Applied Linguistics (IJAL) and TEFLIN journal, and examined based on the rhetorical move following Yang & Allison's proposed model of conclusion section (2003). The result revealed that, first,  the majority of RA Conclusion sections (22 [73%] out of 30 conclusion sections) contain all elements of the Conclusion sections outlined by Yang and Allison (2003), namely:  obligatory; move 1 (summarizing the study), the conventional moves; move 2 (Evaluating the study) and move 3 (deduction from the research); second, concerning steps features, most Indonesian authors tend to use step 1 in realizing move 2 (evaluating the study) This implies that those authors tend to justify their study by indicating the result of the research in evaluating the study in the conclusion section rather than stating the limitation of the research or evaluating the methodology in the conclusion section. In move 3, the Indonesian author tends to use step 1 (recommending future research) in realizing this move. This implies that the author prefers to state the possible areas for future study of study rather than drawing pedagogic implications. In conclusion, most Indonesian authors fulfilled the rhetorical structure of yang and Allison proposed model in their conclusion section.

Abstract

As our curiosity has led us to wonder why Thai children's literature with a simple plot, like Jane Vejjajiva's The Happiness of Kati, could actually captivate readers all over the world. By analysing the figurative language in the book, with an emphasis on similes as the scope, we would then try to demonstrate the hypothesis that the writer's story and her writing style have a significant relationship. According to the study's objectives, a list of all the similes used in the novel would be included in the study's findings, along with a list of the most frequently used similes based on the meaning analysis classification and the precise meanings behind them. These sought to establish the connection between the story and the author's writing style. Analysing descriptive data was used in the research. The process of gathering the data implies locating the similes that frequently appear in phrases and sentences and using the conjunctions "like" or "as." Both Richard's (1936) and Fromilhague's (1995) theories—simile analysis and simile meaning analysis—were applied in data analysis. The examined data were reviewed in order to determine the relationship between the story and the writer's writing style. The study found that there are 78 similes in the novel. 63 explicit and 25 implicit similes, or 68% and 32%, respectively, were discovered through meaning analysis. The author's writing style in her novel greatly enhances the plot that she develops in a variety of ways.

Abstract

Higher order thinking skills (HOTS) refer to the more advanced mental processes outlined in Anderson and Krathwohl's updated version of Bloom's taxonomy (2021), comprising analysis, evaluation, and creation.". This research aimed to investigate the composition of HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skill) in language tasks and knowledge of the English textbook on titled “Pathway” To English For SMA/MA Grade X and to explain the dominant cognitive dimension used in this textbook. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative. This research is classified as a content analysis. A table checklist based on the cognitive domain of the revised Bloom’s taxonomy was the instrument of this research. The findings of the research indicate that for language skills, this book is more concerned with HOT than LOTS with the percentage of HOTS at 58,34% and LOTS at 41,66%.  The result showed The most dominant level of thinking skill of language skill in this book is analyze (C4), followed by apply (C3), remember (C1), create (C6), evaluate (C5), and understand (C2).  For knowledge, it can be concluded that the composition of the Higher Order Thinking Skill (HOTS) presented in the instruction question on the English Textbook is not lower than the Lower Order Thinking Skill (LOTS) with the percentage of HOTS at 20,83% and LOTS at 79,17%. The dominant composition is Apply (C3), followed by Remember (C1), Apply (C4), and Understand (C2).   The researcher concludes that for language skill and knowledge, the cognitive dimension of each instruction question is present in the imbalance portion. Based on the result, this book has followed the ministry of education regulation and mereka curriculum in providing HOTS material in the teaching and learning process for language skills and proving LOTS material for knowledge because grammar and vocabulary teach the basics of language. It is suggested for teachers who use this book to be innovative, and creative, even teachers can adapt from other sources in giving instruction to develop students’ critical thinking.

Abstract

The article reflect with songs lyrics as the data analysis. The data of this translation research was derived from a famous songs namely a whole new world (1992).This study aim at investigating of the translation strategies in the Indonesian translation of English song A whole new world in animated musical movie. According to the findings of this study, there are 35 verses in the song a whole new world. Based on the data in this research found that the most frequently used translation strategy is translation 18 times. As it can be seen in the tables and the least frequently used adaptation strategies.
