Abstract

Multiculturalism has become a prominent issue in media communication, serving as both a communication strategy and a form of awareness for creators, particularly in visual communication design media. Most of the previous findings on the study of multiculturalism in the media suggest that different cultural backgrounds must be considered for global brands to reach diverse markets since visual language is not universal. In addition, other studies explore the interpretation of multiculturalism ideas in the media and practice participatory design research to communicate multiculturalism value through visual communication media. Nevertheless, in Indonesia, the interpretation study of multiculturalism in designs, especially those created by women designers, as a manifestation of multiculturalism awareness seems to be underexplored. To narrow the gap, this study uses the visual semiotic theory of Roland Barthes to investigate the multicultural significance represented in visual images in the work of Indonesian women designers by outlining the levels of denotative and connotative meanings which develop into myth. This research reveals that the idea of multiculturalism in the design work of Nita Darsono and Sanchia Hamidjaja can provide other counter-knowledge in representing the diversity amongst the hegemony of a single and standardized body myth, such as white skin, ideal body, and race, in media. This approach better understands the audiences and appreciates cultural diversity. Overall, this study sheds light on the importance of multiculturalism in visual communication design media, particularly in representing diversity and challenging hegemonic norms. It highlights the need for more research in this area, particularly from underrepresented perspectives, such as women designers in Indonesia.

Abstract

Jakarta and its surrounding supporting cities are intertwined with the electric train transportationsystem known as the Jabodetabek KRL. In using this rail-based mass transportation facility, currentusers/prospective users are assisted by wayfinding information signs in the form of a diagrammaticmap of the Jabodetabek KRL route. One of the official route maps currently in use is the four-way(north-south, east-west) route simplification map. As a result of the simplification of the visualizationof space and distance, navigation confusion occurs on the map, where the positions of station points /between stations and geographical locations are very inaccurate / far from the actual spatialconditions. This of course will distract the basic ability of the user's spatial cognition. This study triesto explore the problems of visual perception and non-verbal communication between users (assubjects) and currently used KRL information signs (as objects) that occur as a result of the variety andmethod of visualization. Using the method of direct observation of the object under study andcomparing it with the spatial conditions of the official geographic map of Jabodetabek, then proceedwith a confirmation process to users (respondents) regarding the misperceptions that have occurred.The results of this study are expected to provide input to the designer of the Jabodetabek KRL routediagram map to pay attention to the fundamental problems of opportunities for misperceptions thatoccur and to improve the communication presentation in the next publication of the route diagrammap.

Abstract

The e-KTP megacorruption case in 2017 that dragged Setya Novanto made it a public conversation, including mass media like Tempo Magazine on its cover. Tempo Magazine uses illustrated images in each of its releases with distinctive characters and styles and often creates controversy. In addition, the illustrations on this cover also have various hidden meanings and codes that need to be interpreted deeply. Therefore, this study aims to explain the structure of the visual signs on the cover illustration of the “Jerat Dua” edition of Tempo Magazine. In addition, this research is also intended to reveal the codes contained in the cover illustration. This study uses a qualitative approach with an interpretive descriptive analysis. The method is visual semiotics with Roland Barthes' semiotics theory, including the structure of visual signs and the Five Codes of Barthes. The researcher concludes that the structure of the “Jerat Dua” edition of Tempo Magazine is composed from denotative signifier which change its meaning to connotative signified. The connotative meaning that appears is based on a convention, the anchoring of meaning, gestures/expressions, the use of metaphor/metonymy rhetoric, and references from reality. The codes that are revealed on the cover of this magazine include hermeneutic, semantic, proairetic, symbolic, and cultural codes. Keywords: illustration, magazine cover, visual semiotic, sign, code

Abstract

Fenomena horor di tanah air, mengukir prestasi dengan larisnya film bergenre horor karya anak bangsa dengan penghargaan yang diraih baik di dalam negeri maupun luar negeri. Revitalisasi konsep horor, membuat Film “Jelangkung” berhasil mengundang 1,5 juta penonton pada tahun 2001. Film “Jelangkung” melakukan perubahan pada aktor dan aktrisnya, pemilihan lokasi syuting, karakter fisik hantu, termasuk tujuan atau motivasi hantu, sekaligus merancang alur cerita yang berbeda, menghadirkan visualisasi yang segar, adanya kebaruan serta cara pandang yang berbeda dalam genre horor film nasional. Dengan patung atau boneka jelangkung sebagai tokoh utama dalam film ini, yang menampilkan beberapa sosok hantu yang berbeda. Kreativitas tidak hanya pada sosok hantu, tetapi juga pemilihan karakter pemain film yang disesuaikan dengan konsep remaja, yang harus berhubungan dengan dunia hantu. Namun bagaimanakah dengan desain scene yang menampilkan kekuatan Film “Jelangkung.” Kekuatan sekaliguskebaruan, antara remaja dengan tema horor yang secara tidak langsung mengubah kebiasaan masyarakat tentang horor yang menciptakan wawasan baru tentang hubungan antara pemain dengan hantu. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif, melalui kajian Teori Semiotika - Roland Barthe, penelitian ini bermaksud untuk mengungkap desain visual yang terdapat pada scene terpilih, dengan mempertimbangkan adanya makna yang khusus atau inti tentang horor dalam perspektif masyarakat,yang dijelaskan melalui pengertian signifikansi, denotasi-konotasi, dan pengungkapan mitos terhadap visual-visual film.Kata Kunci : film, horor, scene, semiotik, tanda.

Abstract

Bangunan Masjid Gedhe merupakan sebuah representasi kehidupan masyarakat jawa yang selalu berpegang teguh terhadap budaya yang identik dengan unsur keseimbangan. Oleh karena itu, perlu untuk mengungkap makna dan signifikansi dalam arsitektur Masjid Gedhe sehingga tidak hanya dipandang sebagai bangunan fisik, tetapi juga sebagai simbol yang mengkomunikasikan nilai-nilai keagamaan dan budaya Islam. Dengan menggunakan Semiotika Ruang untuk mengkaji bangunan Masjid Gedhe, terutama fokus pada fasad dan ruang utama. Melalui metode ini, aspek-aspek arsitektur, dekorasi, tata letak, dan penggunaan ruang diinterpretasikan sebagai simbol-simbol yang menyampaikan pesan keagamaan, budaya, dan sosial. Kesimpulan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Masjid Gedhe mencerminkan makna filosofis budaya Jawa yang dipadukan dengan ajaran Islam, terutama dalam struktur ruang dan fungsi-fungsi simbolisnya. Ruang-ruang seperti liwan, serambi, dan regol mencerminkan signifikasi dalam praktek keagamaan dan interaksi sosial di dalam masjid. Ini menunjukkan bahwa melalui kajian Semiotika Ruang, Masjid Gedhe dapat dipahami sebagai medium yang menggabungkan nilai-nilai budaya dan agama dalam satu wadah fisik yang sama, mencerminkan perpaduan harmonis antara dua tradisi yang penting dalam kehidupan masyarakat Yogyakarta. Penelitian ini memberikan wawasan baru tentang bagaimana elemen-elemen arsitektur Masjid Gedhe Kauman berfungsi sebagai simbol yang menyampaikan pesan-pesan religius dan budaya, sehingga memperdalam pemahaman tentang peran ruang dalam menghubungkan aspek fisik dan spiritual dalam arsitektur Islam.

Abstract

Abstract This paper is a study of Andreas Gursky’s photo Rhein II. In this study, the post-structural semiotic analysis method is used to interpret meaning based on signs on the Rhein II. The post-structural semiotic analysis becomes the basis for interpreting meanings using related references. In the study of Rhein II photo objects, visual text analysis is expected to provide positive benefits for the development of photography, especially academically. Rhein II is a photo by Andreas Gursky. In Rhein II’s photograph, a contemporary photo is presented as a multi-reality representation analyzed using the post-structural semiotic method. The object of research is interpreted as a text that has a layer of meaning that is squeezed out of its essence by semiotics. The deconstruction of the signification system in the visual element is identified by reading the structural postal semiotic theory codes: text analysis process, creation process. The results of semiotic extraction produce an interpretive study of Rhein II which is full of meaning.Keyword: imagery, photography, semioticaAbstrak Makalah ini merupakan kajian dari foto Rhein II karya Andreas Gursky. Dalam kajian ini digunakan metode analisis semiotika post struktural untuk menginterpretasikan makna berdasarkan tanda-tanda pada Rhein. Analisis semiotika post struktural menjadi landasan dalam menginterpretasikan makna-makna dengan menggunakan referensi terkait. analisis teks visual, dalam kajian objek foto Rhein II diharapkan dapat memberikan kebermanfaatan yang positif bagi perkembangan fotografi khususnya secara akademis. Rhein II adalah foto karya Andreas Gursky. Dalam karya Rhein II, sebuah foto kontemporer dihadirkan sebagai representasi multi realitas yang dianalisis menggunakan metode semiotika post struktural. Objek penelitian dimaknai sebagai teks yang memiliki lapisan makna yang terperas esensinya oleh semiotika. Dekonstruksi sistem penandaan dalam elemen visual diidentifikasikan dengan pembacaan kode-kode teori semiotika pos struktural. Proses analisis teks, proses penciptaan. Hasil ekstraksi semiotika menghasilkan kajian interpretatif Rhein II yang sarat makna.Kata kunci: citra imaji, fotografi, semiotika

Abstract

Abstract A painting is not merely making doodles on canvas, but there are external factors that influence it; social, political, and cultural arts of the community. The visual language created by the painter is a personal symbol, formed by the experience of his creativity. Agus TBR chose horse as one of the visual languages for his paintings to form messages and symbolic meanings. This research was conducted to analyze the development of Agus TBR’s paintings. To understand the meaning in terms of denotation, connotation, myth and ideology as well as to identify the relation of visual signs in Agus TBR’s paintings. The analysis method is carried out using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach in reading the signs contained in Agus’ painting entitled “Land of Hope”. This research is aimed to arouse artists and researchers ideas in creating paintings which include various visual objects that enriched with symbolic meanings. Keywords: AgusTBR, painting, semiotics, Roland Barthes Abstrak Sebuah lukisan tidak hanya sekedar membuat coretan di atas kanvas, tetapi ada faktor eksternal yang mempengaruhi seperti sosial, politik, dan seni-budaya masyarakat. Bahasa rupa yang dibuat oleh pelukis merupakan simbol-simbol yang bersifat pribadi, yang terbentuk dari pengalaman kreativitasnya. Agus TBR memilih objek kuda sebagai salah satu bahasa rupa untuk karya lukisannya dalam membentuk pesan dan makna simbolik. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk membaca perkembangan karya seni lukis Agus TBR. Untuk memahami makna dalam tingkatan denotasi, konotasi, mitos dan ideologi serta membaca relasi tanda visual pada lukisan Agus TBR. Metode analisa yang dilakukan dengan menggunakan pendekatan semiotika Roland Barthes dalam membaca tanda-tanda yang terdapat pada karya lukisnya yang berjudul “Land of Hope”. Melalui penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memperkaya pemahaman dalam memahami pesan yang terdapat pada suatu lukisan. Selain itu juga diharapkan seniman lukis dapat mengembangkan ide dan gagasannya dalam menciptakan suatu karya lukis dengan objek-objek visual yang memiliki makna simbolik. Abstract

Trademark protection in Indonesia provides an opportunity for brand owners who feel that their brand is used by other parties to legally dispute, by filing a lawsuit against the registered mark to the Commercial Court in the form of compensation or termination of all actions on the use of the mark, this effort is called a civil legal action. The registered trademark dispute between PS Glow and MS Glow at the Surabaya commercial court which became a research case study, reports on the assumption of similarity became research from a semiotic perspective because brands are signs, so the marks on brand objects are analyzed in order to be able to provide conclusions on the similarities reported in real terms. scientific. This study uses a descriptive-qualitative approach using the semiotic method by Charles Sander Pierce, the procedure used is the visual objects that exist in the two disputing brands, namely images, colors and fonts and describe the messages and meanings contained therein. The results of the research provide scientific data from a semiotic perspective on legal issues regarding disputes over registered trademarks, thus the researcher hopes that this can be a reference in providing information on answers to the assumption of similarities in trademarks in dispute. The Semiotics method used in this research can become a recommendation for relevant stakeholders in making decisions in dealing with trademark legal issues in Indonesia. As well as being a recommendation for further research in answering sign problems specifically on trademarks that are more in-depth.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze character design in the children's book MHCT (Misteri Hilangnya si Cacing Tanah). Through literature reviews and analysis of popular children's book samples, particularly those translated from non-Indonesian publications, this research identifies key elements in character design in the MHCT book that are interconnected through visual storytelling about waste management in the surroundings. The results indicate that characters are combination of shape, color, expression, and style is a crucial aspect in creating appealing and memorable characters for young reader, especially kids from 7 to 10 years old. Keywords : children picturebooks, waste management for kids, character design  Studi ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis desain karakter dalam buku cerita anak MHCT (Misteri Hilangnya si Cacing Tanah). Melalui tinjauan pustaka dan analisis terhadap sampel buku cerita anak yang popular terutama terjemahan dari buku terbitan luar Indonesia. Penelitian ini mengidentifikasi elemen-elemen kunci dalam desain karakter di buku MHCT menggunakan teori dari Bryan Tillman. Karakter ini dikaitkan melalui komunikasi visual cerita dalam pengelolaan sampah disekitar. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kombinasi bentuk, warna, ekspresi, dan gaya yang kohesif merupakan aspekpenting dalam menciptakan karakter yang menarik dan mudah diingat bagi pembaca muda. Kata Kunci :buku cerita anak bergambar, ramah lingkungan, desain karakter
