Abstract

Chemical exergy analysis was commonly used to evaluate the effectiveness of some energy conversions derived from biomass. In this study, this analysis was conducted to evaluate oil palm kernel shell conversion via high-temperature plasma treatment. The plasma treatment was conducted with a DC power source with a voltage of 12 V and current variations of 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80 A. This chemical exergy efficiency was calculated based on gas chromatography (GC) analytical results. The calculated results showed that the chemical exergy efficiency increased exponentially as the current increased. Thus, based on this result, the arc plasma treatment is more recommended to be applied for the pyrolysis application of oil palm kernel shell than its gasification.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to synthesize porous carbon black microspheres from palm oil black liquor through an in-house spray pyrolysis system. The in-house spray pyrolysis (SP) system was developed using a horizontal furnace. To test the developed SP equipment, the temperature profiles within the developed spray pyrolysis chamber were examined at 3 different setting temperatures (800, 900, and 1000 °C). These temperatures were also applied for synthesizing the carbon black microspheres, with and without nitrogen as carrier gas. The morphology of carbon black produced by using SP equipment was tested by a 3D Optical Microscope and FE-SEM. The optimum temperature obtained in this study is 1000 ºC according to the characterization of carbon black microspheres produced. The FE-SEM analysis indicated the presence of spherical carbon having microstructures. This indicates that the in-house spray pyrolysis machine has been successfully developed for synthesizing carbon black microspheres.

Abstract

Carbon materials have been widely used in various fields. This study aimed to produce carbon using spray pyrolysis with pine resin (gondorukem) as the precursor and different solvents, namely gondorukem-acetone (GAC), gondorukem-ethyl acetate (GEA), and gondorukem-dichloromethane (GDC). The precursor was prepared in a 1:8 (m/v) ratio, and the spray pyrolysis method was employed by heating the atomized precursor solution in the heating zone of a tube furnace. The atomization precursor was infused with nitrogen gas at a rate of 1 l/min with furnace temperature set at 1000°C with heating times of 5, 10, and 20 mins. The carbonaceous materials produced from the pyrolysis were collected on the wire mesh 1000 that was put on a stainless pipe. Carbon that has been coated on the wire mesh 1000 was analyzed using the optical microscope (OM). The physical properties and morphology of the synthesized carbonaceous material were analyzed using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman, and Brunaur-Emmett-Teller (BET). Based on FE-SEM analysis, the particle size of the GAC sample has an average of 283.58 nm and the highest carbon content, which reached an average of 97.312 At%. GAC samples had the lowest disorder properties in the Raman spectroscopy test, with the value of ID/IG reaching 0.795764. The functional groups observed were C–H stretching at 2920.49 cm-1, N–H bending at 1629.07 cm-1, and C–O stretching at 1159.70 cm-1. Based on carbon content, disorder properties, and functional group stabilization, carbon from the GAC precursor provides the ideal characteristics to be used as a filter material in medical masks. Meanwhile, based on BET testing, the carbon materials from GEA have the ideal material morphological properties to be used as a filter in medical masks. Spray pyrolysis is an efficient method for producing carbon materials, and the use of gondorukem as the precursor shows great potential for various applications.

Abstract

The exponential increase in carbonaceous-based research has prompted the scientific community to apply it to numerous value-added applications. This paper aimed to systematically analyze the comprehensive contributions clusters of publications per year, country, institution, authors, and keywords-wise by using a quantitative review technique called bibliometric analysis. The data was retrieved from the Scopus database to identify the overall scientific trend results with the keyword "carbon dots as a sensor" from 2010 to 2020. The VOSviewer, WordItOut, and Datawrapper are selected as tools for bibliometric analysis and data visualization. In this work, the total citations from the Scopus Core Set and the total citations in the most recent year have only been used for the assessment of highly cited papers. The results showed that after 2014, the number of publications increased significantly with the work related to “carbon dots as sensors.” Thus, comprehensive journals like the Angewandte Chemie - International Edition were the most popular in publishing articles, contributing to almost 6.39% of the research area. The country-wise analysis revealed that China accounted for more than 67.18% of the articles published, followed by the United States and India, comprising 6.24% and 6.13%, respectively. Lastly, keyword cluster analysis revealed five major research hotspots for future discussion. Thus, this analysis provides an important starting point for further studies on research concerning the direction of "carbon dots as a sensor" for positive development in the research area.

Abstract

Electrical storage and distribution devices become important in next generation to help integrate more renewable energy intothe electricity grid. Supercapacitor technology is considered the most promising alternative to Li-ion batteries, which have limitedLithium material. However, the low energy density is a weakness of supercapacitors, even though they have a high-power density.Activated carbon-based supercapacitor electrodes have ideal potential for development. The inherent attributes of activated carbon, pore properties, and functional groups, are responsible for improving the performance of supercapacitors. The main challenge for theresearchers is the pore size distribution, micro (<2nm), meso (2–50 nm), and macro (>50 nm), which varied in activated carbon.Micro pores have an impact on increasing the value of specific capacitance values which will encourage an increase in energy density.Meso pores have an impact on the overall accessibility of the electrode surface by electrolyte ions. Future studies will emphasize oncarbonization and activated carbon activation techniques to improve the surface quality of activated carbon.

Abstract

Broiler chickens are a vital global commodity, known for their rapid growth and efficiency, but their productivity has historically relied on Antibiotic Growth Promoters (AGP), necessitating the development of safe alternatives. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA)-curcumin nanofibers as a potential substitute for Antibiotic Growth Promoters (AGP) in improving the growth performance of broiler chickens. The nanofibers were synthesized via the electrospinning technique at varying PVA concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 15%, and their morphology was characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The in vitro assay evaluated curcumin release profiles were measured in phosphate buffer (PBS, pH 7,4) at 37 °C. A seven-day in vivo experiment involving 30 broiler hens categorized into 5 groups to assess the impact of supplementation on body weight, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio (FCR). The synthesized PVA- curcumin nanofibers exhibited optimal dimensions (100–135 nm), with gradual curcumin release measuered at 43,5–51,5% at 5 minutes and 49,27–64,5% at 120 minutes. While statistical analysis showed no significant difference (p> 0,05). The treatment group showed higher average daily gain (ADG) (99,49–115,4 g) and feed intake (FI) (118,76–129,11 g), resulting in better feed conversion ratio (FCR) (0,921–1,00) compared to the control group. In conclusion, PVA-curcumin nanofibers were successfully synthesized, demonstrating their potential to improve growth performance, and are suitable as an alternative non-antibiotic growth promoter in broilers.
