Abstract

This study aims to analyze the comparative results of translating balaghiyyah meanings in Ibn al-Rumi elegiac poem using the traditional Al-Ma‘ani dictionary and Google Gemini. Employing a qualitative descriptive-comparative approach, the study uses six selected verses of Ibn al-Rumi poem and their translated outputs as the primary data. The findings reveal that the Al-Ma‘ani dictionary is superior in presenting deeper connotative meanings and the aesthetic values of classical Arabic, as it is grounded in lexical analysis and contextual semantics. Conversely, Google Gemini excels in efficiency and syntactic clarity but tends to produce literal translations that fail to capture the rhetorical and symbolic nuances. Thus, the study concludes that traditional dictionary-based translation remains more effective in preserving the balaghiyyah meaning of Arabic literary texts, while AI-based translation still requires further development to better comprehend figurative and expressive meanings.

Abstract

Abstract In classical Arabic literature, language serves a dual function, as a medium of aesthetic expression and as a tool for voicing emotion, ideology, and social criticism against the injustices of power, as exemplified in the works of Abu al-Ṭayyib al-Mutanabbī (915–965 CE). This study explores the representation of affective meaning in Al-Mutanabbi’s poems as a form of social critique toward the conditions of society and authority in the 10th century. Geoffrey Leech’s (1981) semantic theory is applied to reveal the emotional and ideological dimensions of his works. Data were collected through documentation and library research, then analysed through identification, classification, and interpretation within the socio-political context. The findings indicate that affective meaning plays a crucial role in conveying the poet’s emotions, such as disappointment, as a subtle medium of criticism.

Abstract

Abstract

‘Ramadhan (Arabic Version)’ to uncover the spiritual and connotative meanings hidden within them. Given that Arabic pop song lyrics are currently a popular means of intellectual communication among Gen Z, Michael Riffaterre's semiotic analysis, with its concepts of double reading, hypogram, matrix, and variant, was chosen as the methodological approach. This qualitative descriptive study used observation and note-taking techniques and literature study, with song lyrics as the main object. The results of the analysis show that heuristic (literal) reading produces separate denotative meanings, such as in the phrase فَالشّوقُ طَال (longing has been long). However, the presence of ungrammatical elements such as the personification of Ramadan as لِلرُّوحِ دَوَاء (‘medicine for the soul’) forces the reader towards the hermeneutic (retroactive) stage. Hermeneutic reading reveals the core Matrix of the lyrics, namely Longing for Ramadan, which is transformed through the Model of a call (munada) full of love ( يَا حَبِيب). Variants such as يَا نُورُ الْهِلاَلْ and يَا شَهرَ القُرآن serve to reinforce this Matrix. This song uses the hypogram of piety (QS. Al-Baqarah: 197) and ends with a prayer that reflects the resolution of the poetic tension between the desire for eternity and the transience of time. This study confirms the effectiveness of Riffaterre's model in exploring spiritual and symbolic values in contemporary Arabic music.

Abstract

This study addresses the problem of how moral messages are constructed and communicated in films that portray socio-political conflict within plural societies, particularly in contexts shaped by historical trauma and sectarian division. Focusing on Qadiyya Raqm 23 (The Insult), directed by Ziad Doueiri, the study aims to uncover the moral meanings embedded in the film and to explain how cinematic signs function as vehicles of ethical discourse. Methodologically, the research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach grounded in Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework, emphasizing the levels of denotation, connotation, and myth. Key scenes, dialogues, and visual symbols are analyzed to identify patterns of meaning and ideological representation. The results reveal that the film represents personal conflict as a symbolic extension of collective memory, identity politics, and unresolved historical grievances in Lebanese society. At the denotative level, the narrative depicts a legal dispute between two individuals, while at the connotative level it exposes deep-seated emotions of humiliation, pride, and resentment. At the mythic level, the film constructs a broader moral discourse that critiques inherited hatred, sectarian prejudice, and social discrimination, while emphasizing human dignity, empathy, and the necessity of reconciliation. This study contributes to film and cultural studies by demonstrating the relevance of Barthesian semiotics in decoding moral narratives in Middle Eastern cinema. It also offers insight into how film can function as a reflective medium for promoting ethical awareness and social coexistence in plural and post-conflict societies.

Abstract

Abstract

Al-Quran is a book of life, containing various rules concerning the order of human life in the world and the results of that life in the hereafter. Therefore it is certain that the Quran talks about food. The term food in Arabic is mentioned with 3 pieces of the terms. These are: "aklun, tha'am, and ghiza 'un. But of these three terms, the Quran uses only two, namely tha'am, and aklun. This study aimed to determine the influence of food in human life by taking a few verses in Quran according to Buya Hamka's point of view in Tafsir al-azhar. Based on the results of the discussion, Buya Hamka in interpreting food verses in Tafsir al-Azhar's cannot be separated from the correlation between verses one with the other verses, so that a complete understanding of the concept of food can be obtained. Based on the verses studied, it can be understood that the meaning of food in the interpretation of Buya Hamka, is grouped into various terms, namely, healthy food, eating food proportionally according to needs, having a sense of security towards food, food as a cry, food as a warning, and food as gift. The influence of food on human life has a profound effect on a person's soul, including praying, making the soul so calm, whereas a bribe is forbidden in one's stomach, then his worship will not be accepted for forty days, bad food will damage health and soul.

Abstract

The focus of this study is related to the translation techniques of Covid-19 terms from Arabic language into Indonesian language and one of its regional languages, Sundanese. The translation materials are the learning material texts submitted by students on WhatsApp. This study uses a comparative descriptive method to analyze the transformation of vocabularies or terms in Arabic into Indonesian and one its regional language, Sundanese. Regarding the texts, no different from any translation of other texts, the techniques used that can be observed here are pure borrowing or literal translation, naturalized borrowing, and established equivalent. The technique of pure borrowing seems to be done as the last resort; words, such as virus, corona, internet, soap and bacteria, are not terms familiar for everyday conversation in these languages. Even more, other words, such as frustrasi, depresi, ahli jiwa ‘frustration, depression, psychiatrist’, have no equivalents in Sundanese. Consequently, these words are not translated in Sundanese text, but taken as they are. Comparing the translation results from Arabic into Indonesian and Sundanese gives us information that very often to use the terms as used in the Indonesian language is the only option the Sundanese students might have.
