Abstract

The development of science, technology and culture cause the meaning of a word to change. Word absorption in foreign language also develops over time. This research aims to analyze how the meaning of the word has changed compared to its original meaning in the newspaper Asy-Syarqu Al-Ausath edition Vol. 47. Understanding the changes in the meanings of absorbing words helps prevent ambiguity and supports communication accuracy in the Arabic world. It belongs to descriptive qualitative research. The approach applied in this research is the change of meaning according to Sarwiji Suwandi's view. The data collection technique used listening method followed by documentation technique. Data analysis in this study used intralingual pairing method with the technique of connecting-comparing (HBB). The results of this study show that there are two types of meaning changes, namely (1) generalization or expansion of meaning, for example in the absorption word al-barliman (البرلمان) and (2) specialization or narrowing of meaning as in the absorption word diplomasiyah (الدبلوماسية). Of the two types of meaning changes in the Vol. 47 edition of Asy-Syarqu Al-Ausath newspaper, specialization or narrowing changes in meaning are most often found. So it can be seen that English words absorbed into Arabic tend to experience a process of specialization or narrowing of meaning. Keywords: Loanwords, Change of Meaning, Semantic, Arabic Newspaper

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to discuss the concept of magic (sihr) in the Qur’an using an encyclopedic semantic approach. The formal object of this research is the semantic study of the Qur’an, while the material object is the concept of magic in the Qur’an. The context of this study is encyclopedic semantics. The research method is qualitative, employing descriptive-analytical methods and is based on library research. The findings of this study indicate that the word sihr in the Qur’an has a basic meaning of the last part of the night, before the break of dawn, where the darkness of the night meets the light of dawn. This makes anything present during that time appear unclear and indistinct. This meaning is also found in pre-Islamic poetry texts and authoritative Arabic dictionaries. Moreover, the basic meanings found in these dictionaries include meanings reflected in the Qur’an, such as ambiguity, hiddenness, deception, and others. Additionally, the meaning of sihr in the Qur’an has undergone a shift toward a more specific negative connotation. This is evidenced by the frequent association of the term sihr with negative words or meanings in the Qur’an, although the Qur’an still retains its basic meanings from the pre-Islamic period, such as the dawn, something attractive and beautiful, as well as abundance in food and drink.

Abstract

Arabic language learning at the junior high school level has traditionally focused on grammar and vocabulary memorization, while the aspect of meaning or semantics is often overlooked. As a result, students tend to understand the language mechanically without grasping the communicative messages embedded in the text. This study aims to describe the forms, strategies, and benefits of integrating translation and semantics studies in Arabic language learning at the junior high school level. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, display, and verification to identify patterns of meaning integration in translation activities. The findings reveal that teachers link translation exercises with lexical and contextual meaning analysis, utilize narrative-dialogue texts, and conduct discussions on idiomatic meanings prior to translation. This approach enhances students’ ability to comprehend textual meaning, fosters semantic awareness, and motivates them, as the learning process becomes more logical and communicative. However, several challenges arise, including limited instructional time, varying levels of student proficiency, and insufficient teacher training in semantic linguistics. The study recommends the need for teacher training in the application of semantic theory and the development of meaning-based instructional materials, so that Arabic language learning at the junior high school level can be conducted more effectively, contextually, and meaningfully

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the comparative results of translating balaghiyyah meanings in Ibn al-Rumi elegiac poem using the traditional Al-Ma‘ani dictionary and Google Gemini. Employing a qualitative descriptive-comparative approach, the study uses six selected verses of Ibn al-Rumi poem and their translated outputs as the primary data. The findings reveal that the Al-Ma‘ani dictionary is superior in presenting deeper connotative meanings and the aesthetic values of classical Arabic, as it is grounded in lexical analysis and contextual semantics. Conversely, Google Gemini excels in efficiency and syntactic clarity but tends to produce literal translations that fail to capture the rhetorical and symbolic nuances. Thus, the study concludes that traditional dictionary-based translation remains more effective in preserving the balaghiyyah meaning of Arabic literary texts, while AI-based translation still requires further development to better comprehend figurative and expressive meanings.
