Abstract

Background: The construction sector is of particular concern with regard to occupational safety and health, given the persistently high incidence of accidents and safety risks. In 2021, there were 234270 cases of work-related accidents, underscoring the urgent need for the implementation of an effective occupational health and safety management system (OHMS) to protect workers and mitigate the risks associated with injuries and accidents. Objectives: This study aims to investigation is to ascertain the advantages of implementing an OHSMS in the construction sector, with a particular emphasis on worker safety. Methods: A literature review in this study employed online databases, including SINTA, Google Scholar, and Garuda. The keywords utilized were "safety culture," "OHS," and "safety management system" in the construction industry. The inclusion criteria were articles published within the last five years (2020-2024), research conducted in Indonesia, and the research population comprising construction sector workers. Results: The implementation of OHSMS in the construction sector has been demonstrated to significantly reduce the incidence of work-related accidents and injuries, while simultaneously enhancing the efficiency of construction projects. The effectiveness of the construction sector work system is contingent upon a number of factors, including the level of awareness among workers regarding safety protocols, their mindset, and the budgetary allocation towards ensuring the safety and health of workers in the construction sector. Conclusion: The findings of this study also revealed that the implementation of an OHSMS in the construction sector can effectively reduce accidents and enhance project efficiency. However, the field-level adoption of such systems is still constrained by various factors, including worker awareness and capital expenditure.

Abstract

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a prevalent musculoskeletal disorder resulting from compression of the median nerve in the wrist, leading to symptoms such as pain, tingling, and weakness in the hands. Workers in the informal sector, particularly tailors, are at significant risk due to repetitive hand movements, prolonged static postures, and suboptimal ergonomic conditions. This study aims to analyze the occupational risk factors associated with CTS complaints among informal sector tailors in Cimahi City, focusing on age, smoking habits, and working hours. Using a cross-sectional design, data were collected from 107 tailor respondents through purposive sampling and assessed via structured questionnaires. The findings revealed a statistically significant association between age and CTS complaints (p-value = 0.001), indicating that older workers are more susceptible to the disorder. However, no significant correlation was found between smoking habits and CTS complaints (p-value = 0.269). Conversely, a strong association was identified between working hours and CTS complaints (p-value = 0.001), suggesting that prolonged working time increases the risk of developing symptoms. This research contributes valuable insights into occupational health risk factors for tailors, emphasizing the need for improved workplace ergonomics and targeted preventive interventions.

Abstract

Hypertension is a leading non-communicable disease-causing mortality and reducing employee productivity. Its high prevalence in the workplace is linked to lifestyle factors and low awareness of prevention. This study aimed to analyze the effect of hypertension prevention programs on employee awareness and hypertension status in animal feed companies in Semarang. A quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test control groups was employed. From a population of 257 employees, 30 samples were selected for each group. Data were collected via questionnaires and observation sheets. The intervention consisted of a hypertension prevention program including sosialisasi (socialization) about hypertension prevention and routine blood pressure monitoring. Data analysis used paired t-tests and Wilcoxon tests. Sixty subjects participated, with mean ages of 43.87 years (intervention) and 40.23 years (control). In the intervention group, 60% had a family history of hypertension. Significant improvement in awareness was observed in the intervention group (p = 0.000) but not in the control group (p = 0.493). The intervention significantly reduced systolic (p = 0.000) and diastolic (p = 0.012) blood pressure and lowered hypertension prevalence from 63.3% to 40%, whereas the control group showed no change. In conclusion, workplace hypertension prevention programs effectively increase employee awareness and reduce blood pressure and hypertension prevalence. These programs are recommended as preventive strategies in occupational health management.

Abstract

This community service project aims to improve the resilience of the wingko industry in Magelang, Indonesia, by improving workstations and providing disaster preparedness education. The wingko industry faces challenges related to occupational safety and health due to non-ergonomic working conditions and limited implementation of safety standards. The project consisted of four stages: field assessment, measuring employee work posture using the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) and Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ), designing a workplace layout involving workers, and organizing the workplace according to occupational health and safety standards. The community service results showed that 68% of workers had a RULA score of 5-6, 21% a score of 4, and 11% a score of 7, indicating the need for investigation and change, while 78% reported complaints of low-grade musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), with the back and calves being the most affected body parts. Interventions included designing ergonomic workstations, installing safety signs, marking evacuation routes, and providing educational posters on health and safety. Recommendations for regular maintenance, storage space management, and the integration of 5R principles are provided to ensure continuous improvement. This project demonstrates the importance of ergonomic interventions and worker education in enhancing the resilience and sustainability of the local industry.

Abstract

Low Back Pain (LBP) is a prevalent occupational health complaint among batik artisans, resulting from static and non-ergonomic work postures. However, awareness regarding prevention and early management remains low, as these complaints are often normalized. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a targeted educational and practical training program on William Flexion Exercise in increasing knowledge about LBP prevention among batik artisans. The program applied a pre-experimental one-group pre-test post-test design involving 21 batik artisans. The intervention consisted of a socialization session on LBP and ergonomics, followed by a practical demonstration and training of the William Flexion Exercise. An increase in knowledge was measured using a questionnaire administered before and after the event. Data were analyzed using the non-parametric Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. The findings revealed an increase in the participants' mean knowledge score from 80.95 in the pre-test to 86.67 in the post-test. This increase was found to be statistically significant (W = 0.0; p = 0.031), with a large effect size (r = 0.88). The socialization and training program on the William Flexion Exercise was proven to be significantly effective in improving the knowledge of batik artisans regarding LBP prevention. The findings suggest that a community-based educational program incorporating practical exercise demonstration is a feasible and promising approach for increasing health knowledge. This model warrants further investigation in a larger controlled study.
