Abstract

This study aims to discover the switching and mixing code types and their functions that are dominantly used in student online discussions. This research was designed in descriptive-qualitative method by using video recordings and interviews from Pragmatics class of postgraduate degree students as the data sources. The obtained data were then analyzed using Miles and Huberman model of analysis by involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that students frequently switched and mixed codes during the discussions. In this case, ode mixing was dominantly occurred compared to code switching. There were 78 occurrences of code changes in total, with the proportions of 44 mixings and 34 switchings. Dealing with the types, insertion code mixing was found to be the mostly used in the discussions whereas intersentenential switching becomes the least. The phenomena of code switching and mixing in the classroom discussions has various functions, i.e.: for communication strategy, for delivering the meaning, for making clarification of the information, for defining specific terms, and for increasing understanding. This study also reflects the students' positive attitudes toward using switching and mixing codes in classroom discussion activities. It is recommended for further research to ensure the appropriate strategies for the teachers in switching and mixing codes for both offline and online classes.

Abstract

This research investigates the grammatical construction and common logical problems in argumentative essays produced by Master of English Education students at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. This study utilized a qualitative research framework and content analysis as the design. The data collection involves a detailed syntactical analysis, facilitated by Shang’s syntax tree generator, with the researcher actively engaged in the evaluation and categorization of grammatical and logical elements. The main arguments are identified, and connections to the overarching thesis are established. Systematic coding is applied to categorize findings, encompassing sentence structure, evidence usage, tone, logical connectives, cohesions, counterarguments, and identification of logical fallacies. Findings reveal notable technical errors in sentence construction, especially in constructing complex sentences. Moreover, difficulties in understanding the appropriate genre in argumentative writing and logical errors in expressing opinions and drawing conclusions are identified. This study discovered that students encounter difficulties in maintaining a coherent and logically sound progression of ideas throughout their essays.

Abstract

This study depicts moral values in English Language Teaching (ELT) textbooks. This research aimed to examine and articulate the moral principles in English textbooks endorsed by the government. This study used a descriptive-qualitative approach using a content analysis strategy. The researcher used the documentation approach to gather data. The statistics were obtained from English Senior High School textbooks endorsed by the Ministry of National Education. The data were evaluated using the analytical framework developed by Miles et al. (2014), which included three main stages: (a) data condensation, (b) data presentation, and (c) conclusion. The result showed that this book covered all of the eighteen moral values embedded by the Ministry of National Education. Nevertheless, improvement is still needed because the eighteen moral values are distributed unevenly across five units, along with two concluding units.

Abstract

The study aims to investigate the cultural representation of the EFL Textbook mandated by the Indonesian government in the Merdeka Curriculum for 10th-grade students. The frameworks used for the analysis are Moran's (2001) theory of five dimensions of culture (products, practices, perspectives, communities, and persons) and Chao's (2011) theory of cultural categories (target culture, source culture, international culture, intercultural communication, and universality across culture). Qualitative content analysis is used as the research method. The study's primary data is an English textbook titled Bahasa Inggris: Work in Progress, published by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture (2022) as delivered in implementing the Merdeka Curriculum. The results show that the represented cultural dimensions in the textbook are products (34%), practices (31%), persons (15%), perspectives (13%), and communities (7%). Whereas, for the cultural categories, the result shows that the textbook represents the international culture (32%), source culture (29%), universality across cultures (20%), target culture (16%), and intercultural interaction (3%). Therefore, all cultural dimensions and cultural categories are represented in the textbook with different frequencies. However, the textbook needs improvement regarding the consistency of the cultural dimensions and categories.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the transitivity process in elementary school students' opinion essays on environmental issues in the city. This study is a descriptive qualitative research that uses Fairclough's (1989, 2010) Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework to analyze the data and Halliday's transitivity theory from Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) to analyze the students' opinion essays. The research findings show that the most dominant Transitivity Process is Material Process, where 29 clauses are found in female essays and 10 clauses in male essays, followed by Relational Attributive, Mental, and Existential Attributive Processes. Meanwhile, Behavioral and Verbal Processes did not appear in the writings. Female students produce more writing than male students. Then, based on Fairclough's theory, students use Material Process to narrate environmental issues in the form of physical objects and real actions; Existential Process to describe conditions and things that happen and exist in the city; Relational Attributive Process expresses more specific information about activities by explaining the characteristics of participants and circumstances; and Mental Process is used to describe how students feel and see environmental issues based on their perspectives and experiences as citizens.

Abstract

Indonesia is the home to a vast array of cultures and many unique languages that are the mother tongues of these various islands and cultural groups. One of these is Bima language. Greeting systems and the address of personal names has long been a question of great interest in linguistic fields, especially sociolinguistic study. The main objective of the recent study was to answer some of the main issues as follows: (1) What are name variations in the greeting practices using in the Bima language? (2) How are the name variations applied in daily interactions of the Bima language? (3) Which syllables which are dominantly chosen in greeting terms? The results of my research will present the variations in the greeting system and address of personal names and their variety. Those variations are either at the beginning, the middle or the end of the syllables. However, none of the Bima people’s names begin with a consonant: “C, P, V, and X” as well as the vowel O.” it will also show that the variation of greeting practices and address of names applied in the daily interactions of the Bima language are different for men and women. The effort of maintaining the local style is essential to preserving and investigating as part of the national language because the position and function of the local languages are significant to the contribution and the progress and standardization of the national language. Keywords: Greeting practices, Bima language, and cultural significance

Abstract

This study analyzed the students’ written and spoken discourse in English class about the material of congratulating people. In daily conversation, students have informal conversations. However, when it turns to discussion, they sometimes use formal forms of language even when talking to other students. Therefore, this study aims to find the types of formal language forms used by students during the discussion and the purposes of the use. The participants of this study are the eighth-grade students divided into four groups. A qualitative descriptive approach is applied in this study, and the data are analyzed with IRF. From the analysis, the students used formal forms of language in four types: neutral lexis, complete form, politeness, and turn-taking. This study observes the discussion between the students and how the students interact with each other, as well as whether there is some social problem within the class. Another perception from the researchers is that students need to be motivated to speak English more during English class, even if they are discussing with their friends or when they ask questions to the teacher

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the text, the discourse practice, and the sociocultural practice of Bintang Emon’s discourse humor video entitled “Accidentally (Ga Sengaja),” posted on his Instagram platform. To analyze the data, the qualitative descriptive method was used in this study. The data were obtained from the video transcript of Bintang Emon accessed from Instagram. The data were then analyzed by using Norman Fairclough’s discourse analysis model. Moreover, the techniques used were observing, interpreting the data by analyzing the text, which was seen from three elements such as Representation, Relation, and Identity; analyzing the discourse practice which focused on production, consumption, reproduction of the text; and analyzing the socio-cultural practice of the discourse humor, and the last is concluding. The result of this study showed that Bintang Emon used more rhetorical figures in his discourse in the analysis of text level. He delivered his criticism with good word choices and conveyed some analogies to make the audiences agree with what he said. The intention of his complaint regarding Novel Baswedan’s acid attack case was expressed implicitly so that the audiences cannot predict his intention if they only look at it from his caption. In the level of discourse practice, he successfully represented most of the citizens’ criticism against the case. Furthermore, he took his right to freedom of speech to deliver his thought in a humorous style.
