The study was conducted by involving two lecturers of Discourse Analysis classroom in the Graduate Program of English Education UIN Jakarta, using a qualitative research design. The data were gathered through Zoom video recordings capturing the nuances of learning sessions and the collection of messages within the WhatsApp class group. Subsequently, the data were transcribed and analysed. The interesting findings revealed; 50% of what lecturers said consisted of commands or directives, 24% were representatives, 13% were commissive, and also 13% were expressive. The results indicated that the most dominant type of speech act was directives (50%). Lecturers predominantly utilized directives to guide students in specific actions, including; asking students to allocate more time to study, suggesting them to read reputable scientific journals, and encouraging students to work gradually on their papers to avoid last-minute rushes. In the end, this research helps to understand how lecturers talk and share ideas in a Discourse Analysis classroom. It also provides insights into how lecturers conduct teaching in that particular class.

Abstract

This research discusses the associative meaning of dictions in face wash products for men and women. The study focuses on the use of different dictions displayed in the product description of face wash products. The descriptions of 60 face wash products, 30 for men and 30 for women, were collected. The approach used in this research is semantic analysis. This research aims to discover the associative meanings which occur in the dictions and to find out whether they correspond with the consumer’s point of view. The result shows that the dictions used for face wash products for women give an impression of beauty for the female facial skin, such as lovely, sparkling, flawless, and pearly. On the other hand, the dictions for men’s products give an impression of strengths, such as fighter, buster, energy, and active. This leads to the conclusion that the dictions in face wash products for women are related to ideal physical characteristics of female skin. As for men’s products, the dictions are related to general characteristics of being an active man.

Abstract

Using Critical Discourse Analysis as an analysis tool, this study explores gender representation in the national EFL textbook “Bright: An English” for Eighth Grade Junior High School students, a book utilized in Al-Ikhlas Lambuya Junior High School’s learning and teaching process. Fairclough's three-dimensional framework was used to examine the data in this study. The study aims to see how gender roles are communicated and how gender equity is reflected in the textbook. To uncover the power imbalance or disparity between males and females, characteristics such as male and female visual representation, male and female characters, male and female social, domestic duties, male and female semantic roles, and activities were investigated. The research revealed a gender bias in favour of men in particular functions and activities, such as becoming an 'athlete,' engaging in social events, and participating in sports. On the other hand, female dominance is evident in that female students outnumber male students significantly. Nevertheless, the study discovered some equality in terms of pictorial representation, some activities, and roles. Although conventional roles and behaviours are associated with female and male genders in this book, all genders are equally portrayed in terms of social position, power, and domination. Furthermore, no ideology such as anti-feminism or masculinity is discussed in this text.

Abstract

Abstract

The study analyzed the multimodality of the EFL textbook for elementary school students. A qualitative descriptive study has been employed to carry out this study. The source of the data is the textbook, namely Get Smart Plus. The data was visual and verbal elements within the textbook, including any text and images that explain each other. The study used the multimodal framework proposed by Krees Van Leuween’s visual grammar and Halliday’s transitivity system to analyze the data. The finding shows that the visual elements of the textbook contain representation, composition, and relational patterns. In addition, the dominant process in the textbook is the verbal mode of communication (42%). However, the material process based on the analysis of Halliday’s theory was not represented in the book. The visual and verbal elements relate to each other and can potentially support students’ learning and understanding of the content. Therefore, the textbook can be a multimodal resource for students’ English learning. This study hopes to benefit textbook developers and designers by improving the use of visual and verbal elements of the textbook to support students’ cognitive development. Further research can be conducted on the impact of textbook multimodality on students’ learning achievement to contribute more to the study of discourse.
