Abstract

The disposition of critical thinking is one of the predictors of the success of prospective mathematics teachers in accustoming their students to critical thinking and mathematical literacy in responding to mathematical problems. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research that focuses on the critical thinking disposition of prospective mathematics teachers in designing learning, including assessment instruments. The research aims to describe the critical thinking disposition of prospective mathematics teachers in designing cognitive and psychomotor assessment instruments to familiarize junior high school students with critical thinking and mathematical literacy. It was qualitative in nature, with an exploratory, descriptive methodology with 16 mathematics education students in the fifth semester of the Universitas Jember as research subjects. All research subjects attended three lectures on Evaluation of Mathematics Teaching and Learning Outcomes by applying a collaborative learning model based on team projects. The research findings have indicated that prospective mathematics teachers have a critical thinking disposition in compiling a project on cognitive and psychomotor assessment instruments based on the junior high school students critical thinking and mathematical literacy. The components of the critical thinking disposition of prospective mathematics teachers that emerged during three times lectures were truth-seeking, open-mindedness, maturity, and curiosity. Prospective mathematics teachers collaborated and cared about each other with friends in completing projects.

Abstract

The disposition of critical thinking plays an important role for teachers, particularly in responding to mathematical problems. However, several studies have shown that the disposition to think critically is still low. This descriptive-qualitative research aims to analyze and describe prospective mathematics teachers’ critical thinking dispositions based on their self-confidence. Three subjects were selected from a total of 25 prospective mathematics teachers who were given a self-confidence questionnaire, with very good, good, and poor self-confidence criteria. Data collection was conducted by administering a critical thinking disposition test of the Problems With No Specified Universal Set Given (PWNSUS) type and conducting interviews. The results of this research indicate that prospective mathematics teachers’ self-confidence influences their critical thinking disposition. Prospective mathematics teachers with very good self-confidence fulfill the components of a critical thinking disposition, namely systematicity, self-confidence, inquisitiveness, open-mindedness, and analyticity. Meanwhile, prospective mathematics teachers with good self-confidence fulfill the components of self-confidence, inquisitiveness, open-mindedness, and analyticity. However, prospective mathematics teachers with poor self-confidence only fulfill inquisitiveness and analyticity. Two of the three subjects were unable to achieve two critical thinking components, namely truth and maturity, which can be developed through various exercises.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to discern the patterns of truth-seeking behaviors among students when tackling mathematics problems involving an unknown universe of discourse. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research encompassed stages including instrument preparation and validation, data collection from two mathematics problems with no specified universal set, subject selection, data analysis, triangulation, and interpretation. The research group consisted of tenth-grade high school students who were considered to have ideal abilities in problem-solving. The instrument used was valid and reliable. The findings reveal that students tend to exhibit a lack of truth-seeking behavior when tackling problem-solving tasks. These behaviors include: (1) verifying the universal set, (2) articulating and defining the universal set, (3) documenting the formulas used to solve problems according to the objectives, (4) outlining the steps employed, (5) working through the questions in accordance with predetermined steps, and (6) evaluating the outcomes obtained to ensure their alignment with the established objectives. Their behavioral patterns unfold as follows: (1) comprehending questions to extract problem details and jotting down pertinent information during the problem identification phase, (2) identifying and documenting the queries posed in questions during the goal-setting stage, (3) utilizing all established information during the strategy implementation phase, and (4) formulating conclusions and conducting result verification during the review and evaluation stage. Future researchers can develop learning methods to familiarize students with truth-seeking behaviors.

Abstract

One of the efforts to improve mathematical literacy is through differentiated and STEAM-based learning. This study aims to develop learning tools (teaching modules, LKPD, manuals and test packages) on comparison materials to improve students' mathematical literacy. This research uses the 4D model with the stages of defining, designing, developing, and disseminating. Data were collected through interviews, literature studies, observations, questionnaires, and tests. The teaching module design applies EDP for 6 JP and LKPD that facilitates process and content differentiated learning. The results of the development stage showed that the learning tools met the criteria: validity with a valid category (at least 3 on a scale of 4); practicality criteria with 87.74% of students active, and 3.68 (maximum scale of 4) learning implemented, as well as 71.67% of positive student responses; effectiveness with 79.2% of students complete learning and N-Gain 0.48 for mathematical literacy improvement. This study recommends that teachers accommodate students' learning needs and activate the classroom atmosphere using the learning tools that have been developed.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to optimize the role of mathematics teachers in developing Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS)-based questions through research-based learning outcome analysis. The background of this activity lies in the limited ability of teachers to design assessment instruments that demand higher-order thinking, resulting in learning processes that tend to focus on memorization and basic comprehension. The method applied in this program was a descriptive approach, implemented through training, mentoring, and question analysis workshops involving mathematics teachers at the secondary school level. The program emphasized the understanding of HOTS concepts, the development of questions based on the revised Bloom’s taxonomy, and the analysis of student learning outcomes to assess the effectiveness of the developed instruments. The results showed that teachers were able to improve their skills in designing HOTS-based questions while gaining a more objective picture of student achievement. Therefore, this program is expected to strengthen teachers’ capacity in supporting more meaningful, challenging, and relevant learning aligned with curriculum demands and 21st-century competence needs.

Abstract

Pre-school age is a golden age where children’s growth and development affects the future therefore at this time it is important to pay attention so that the child’s growth and development runs optimally. The role of the family is one of the determining factors for child development because the family is the closest individual and influences the child’s growth and development. This research design is quantitative with using analytical observational. The respondents in this study were families who had pre-school age children. The sampling technique uses a random sampling of 54 people. The independent variable is a family role, whereas the dependent variabel is growth and development of pre-school age children. The data collection is starting with questionnaires. The data is analyzed using chi square. The results showed that there was a relationship between the role of the family and the growth and development of pre-school age children (0,000)<(0,05).The conclusion of this study is that there is a relationship between the role of the family and the growth and development of pre-school children at TK Al Amanah in the village of Campor Barat. Based on the results of this study, it is hoped that families will pay more attention to the growth and development of children at pre-school age. and health workers can provide counseling to families of pre-school age children regarding the role of the family in the child's growth and development process so that it runs optimally.
