Abstract

In everyday life, communication is not just about transmitting messages; it involves complex verbal and nonverbal dimensions. The digital era, driven by the advancement of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), has brought significant changes in the way we interact. Its influence is strongly felt among teenagers who are actively involved in using gadgets. Although designed to facilitate communication, gadgets often become a potential source of problems in human interaction. This research uses a qualitative method with descriptive data analysis, focusing on the communication dynamics between parents and teenagers who actively use gadgets. The research results show that the use of the Batak language in verbal communication by parents is the main highlight, highlighting the cultural richness in family interaction. In addition to the verbal dimension, interaction is also observed through nonverbal communication including facial expressions, body movements, and body posture in the context of parent-teenager relationships.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the subjective experiences of first-born daughters of Generation Z who play the role of the sandwich generation in multigenerational family structures. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study delves into the deeper meanings of the dual roles played by the respondents through in-depth interviews, non-participatory observation, and documentation. The study involved five participants selected using purposive sampling, with criteria including being the first-born daughter aged between 21 and 26 years, residing in Medan Sunggal District, and actively involved in meeting the emotional and economic needs of their families. Data analysis was conducted thematically using the Miles and Huberman model, validated through triangulation, member checking, and academic discussion. The results of the study indicate that first-born daughters face structural, emotional, and cultural pressures that demand adaptive resilience. Open, empathetic, and equal interpersonal communication is the primary tool for negotiating expectations and maintaining psychological stability within the family. The three theories used interpersonal communication, role burden, and family system are able to explain the complexity of power relations and responsibilities within the family. These three concepts are interconnected in shaping the dynamics of the dual roles performed by the informants, where communication serves as the primary mechanism for managing role burdens within the demanding family system structure. These findings emphasize that dual roles are not merely practical but also emotional, making them crucial figures in maintaining family balance. This study recommends support from families, communities, and educational institutions in creating safe and dialogic spaces for first-born daughters so that their roles can be more psychosocially sustainable.

Abstract

The advancement of digital technology, particularly social media, has transformed the way dakwah is delivered, especially among the younger generation. This study focuses on the use of Instagram Reels as a platform to increase engagement with dakwah content among UINSU students. The problem addressed in this research is how appropriate strategies can be employed to attract audience attention and enhance involvement in dakwah content. Through a qualitative approach, data were collected from literature reviews and observations of UINSU students' use of Instagram Reels. The findings indicate that dakwah content presented in short video formats (15-30 seconds) with clear and creative messages effectively captures students' attention. Factors such as message relevance, interactivity, and creativity in content presentation play crucial roles in boosting engagement. Content addressing current issues relevant to students' daily lives, along with encouraging active audience participation, achieved higher interaction levels. Additionally, the timing of posts also significantly influences the success of attracting the audience. The conclusion of this study emphasizes that Instagram Reels holds substantial potential as an effective medium for dakwah to enhance engagement. Therefore, dakwah content creators are encouraged to implement strategies that focus on authenticity, relevance, and creativity to convey religious messages effectively in the digital era. This research is expected to provide insights for preachers and practitioners of dakwah in formulating more innovative and adaptive communication approaches tailored to the characteristics of the younger generation.

Abstract

This article aims to explore the implementation of the Communication Model by the Technical Implementation Unit for the Protection of Women and Children (UPT PPA) in assisting and protecting child victims of sexual violence in Riau Province. Given the increasing cases of sexual violence against children in Indonesia, this study highlights the importance of a comprehensive approach that integrates religious and cultural values to protect victims and support their recovery. Child sexual violence is an iceberg phenomenon in Indonesia, with many cases going unreported due to stigma and fear of social rejection. This study uses a qualitative approach to collect and analyze data on how UPT PPA Riau Province implements communication. The results show that the use of the Communication Model can increase the effectiveness of assistance, provide strong emotional support, and promote holistic recovery of victims. However, this study also identified several barriers, such as limited resources, lack of community understanding of Islamic values, and challenges in law enforcement. This article proposes strategies to overcome these barriers, including improving community education, strengthening institutional capacity, and using effective and empathetic communication in accordance with Islamic principles. This study contributes to the existing literature by showing how Islamic ethical and spiritual principles can be integrated into child protection practices to address and handle sexual violence.

Abstract

The development of social media as a primary digital public space has accelerated the intensity of political communication while simultaneously amplifying the symptoms of polarization in Indonesia. High internet penetration means that political discourse is not only widespread but also produced through ideologically charged language practices. This study aims to analyze how Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) can be used to examine the construction and reproduction of political polarization on social media. The study employed a qualitative design with Fairclough's three-dimensional CDA model approach combined with van Dijk's socio-cognitive perspective. Data consisted of 150 posts and 1,200 public comments selected through purposive sampling based on indications of political content and polarization. Data were collected through digital documentation and non-participant observation, then analyzed through the stages of textual analysis, discourse practice, and social practice. The results revealed three dominant strategies in the reproduction of polarization: the dichotomization of "us" versus "them" identities, the moral delegitimization of opponents, and the mobilization of emotions that significantly increase content engagement. These findings confirm that polarization is a symbolic construction reinforced by the platform's algorithmic logic. This research contributes to strengthening the study of digital political communication and emphasizes the importance of critical discourse literacy and more dialogic content moderation design.
