Abstract

The rapid growth of digital technology has reshaped Islamic preaching, requiring adaptation to new communication patterns. This study aims to analyze the strategies and challenges of Muhammadiyah North Sumatra in utilizing the @Mchannel1912 YouTube channel within the framework of mediatized da’wah. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through literature review, digital observation, and in-depth interviews with key figures from the Muhammadiyah Tabligh Assembly, and analyzed through reduction, classification, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. Findings show that @Mchannel1912 reflects Muhammadiyah’s digital transformation through preacher training, contemporary content production, cross-platform promotion, and collaboration with young cadres and influencers. The novelty lies in its focus on the structured use of YouTube for regional digital da’wah, an area rarely explored in previous studies. Despite challenges such as low digital literacy, limited youth involvement, and weak interactivity, the channel enhances Muhammadiyah’s digital presence and promotes a modern, moderate, and progressive Islamic discourse. This study contributes to the literature on digital Islamic communication and offers practical insights for optimizing religious preaching in a digital society.

Abstract

Islamic communication is an interaction process based on Islamic values, aiming to create peace and salvation in this world and the hereafter. This principle was practiced by the prophets, especially Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), in conveying the message of Islam, including upholding amar ma’ruf nahi mungkar. As part of dakwah, amar ma’ruf nahi mungkar plays a significant role in building a just and prosperous society. In the context of Islamic communication, its implementation must adhere to Sharia principles such as Divinity, Humanity, Morality, and Moderation while considering societal conditions. However, challenges in the field reveal many unethical practices due to limited understanding, literacy, and experience. This often leads to negative impacts that outweigh the expected benefits. Therefore, this study highlights the importance of applying the principles of Islamic communication in upholding amar ma’ruf nahi mungkar to achieve optimal dakwah goals. This study employs a qualitative approach using literature review as the primary method, relying on written sources such as books, articles, and previous research to explore the concepts of Islamic communication in upholding amar ma’ruf nahi mungkar. The conclusion emphasizes that the application of Islamic communication can make a tangible contribution to creating a harmonious, tolerant, and just society.

Abstract

This study examines how K-Pop culture influences the construction and deconstruction of male masculinity in Indonesia in complex social, cultural, and religious contexts. Using a virtual ethnography approach and social media sentiment analysis, this study reveals that representations of masculinity in K-Pop culture—which are gentle, aesthetic, and androgynous—challenge traditional Indonesian masculinity norms that emphasize assertiveness, dominance, and emotional restraint. K-Pop idols as cosmetic brand ambassadors introduced a new form of masculine expression that was more inclusive, but triggered resistance from conservative Islamic norms and values. The novelty of this research lies in the integration of visual analysis, online discourse, and religious perspectives in explaining the negotiation of gender identity in the digital era. The findings show that masculinity is now a tug-of-war between global and local values. Social media serves as a cultural mediation arena where new masculine images can be negotiated, tested, and maintained. This study confirms that K-Pop is influential as an ideological agent in destabilizing and reformulating the boundaries of male identity in contemporary Indonesian society.

Abstract

This article aims to explore and understand how Generation Z in Medan responds to and interacts with music broadcasted by Radio Prambors, a popular radio station among young people. This study is crucial for identifying the dynamics between the musical preferences of the younger generation and the way radio content is presented in the digital era, as well as its implications for broadcasting strategies. Using a qualitative approach, this research involves in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis to gather data from Generation Z listeners. Content analysis is used to interpret audience reactions to the music programming, with a source triangulation approach to enhance data validity, combining interviews, social media content analysis, and listener surveys. The research findings reveal three categories of audience reception: hegemony, where listeners fully accept the music choices presented; negotiation, where listeners are satisfied but offer suggestions for a more diverse genre presentation; and opposition, where some less featured music genres cause dissatisfaction among listeners. Furthermore, the interaction between listeners and the radio station shows that Radio Prambors Medan functions not only as a music provider but also as a mediator in a broader communication network that influences the musical tastes and preferences of its listeners. The discussion in this study integrates Manuel Castells' Network Society theory to explain how social and digital networks affect media consumption and interaction among Generation Z, highlighting the crucial role of digital technology adaptation in radio programming strategies. By understanding these dynamics, Radio Prambors Medan can more effectively craft strategies that appeal to its listeners, ultimately maintaining its relevance in the rapidly changing media landscape. The recommendations resulting from this study emphasize the importance of broader digital technology use and more intensive social media interaction to enhance listener engagement and enrich their listening experience.

Abstract

In everyday life, communication is not just about transmitting messages; it involves complex verbal and nonverbal dimensions. The digital era, driven by the advancement of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), has brought significant changes in the way we interact. Its influence is strongly felt among teenagers who are actively involved in using gadgets. Although designed to facilitate communication, gadgets often become a potential source of problems in human interaction. This research uses a qualitative method with descriptive data analysis, focusing on the communication dynamics between parents and teenagers who actively use gadgets. The research results show that the use of the Batak language in verbal communication by parents is the main highlight, highlighting the cultural richness in family interaction. In addition to the verbal dimension, interaction is also observed through nonverbal communication including facial expressions, body movements, and body posture in the context of parent-teenager relationships.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the application of journalists in carrying out journalistic duties in Medan City. The research method used is descriptive with a qualitative approach. The research informants were ten people who were determined purposively. Observation, interviews, and documentation are data collection. Data analysis refers to the Milles-Hubberman model: data reduction, data presentation, drawing, and testing conclusions. The results of research on the application of journalists in carrying out journalistic duties in Medan City cannot be realized in totality because there are conflicts of interest, such as the interests of media authorities, advertisers, and the government who drive the news and the personal interests of journalists. It is possible to implement the independence of journalists with the style of writing Feature news (typical essays).

Abstract

This study aims to explore the subjective experiences of first-born daughters of Generation Z who play the role of the sandwich generation in multigenerational family structures. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study delves into the deeper meanings of the dual roles played by the respondents through in-depth interviews, non-participatory observation, and documentation. The study involved five participants selected using purposive sampling, with criteria including being the first-born daughter aged between 21 and 26 years, residing in Medan Sunggal District, and actively involved in meeting the emotional and economic needs of their families. Data analysis was conducted thematically using the Miles and Huberman model, validated through triangulation, member checking, and academic discussion. The results of the study indicate that first-born daughters face structural, emotional, and cultural pressures that demand adaptive resilience. Open, empathetic, and equal interpersonal communication is the primary tool for negotiating expectations and maintaining psychological stability within the family. The three theories used interpersonal communication, role burden, and family system are able to explain the complexity of power relations and responsibilities within the family. These three concepts are interconnected in shaping the dynamics of the dual roles performed by the informants, where communication serves as the primary mechanism for managing role burdens within the demanding family system structure. These findings emphasize that dual roles are not merely practical but also emotional, making them crucial figures in maintaining family balance. This study recommends support from families, communities, and educational institutions in creating safe and dialogic spaces for first-born daughters so that their roles can be more psychosocially sustainable.
