Abstract

This study aims to analyze how media framing by Kompas.com in reporting plastic waste reduction in Medan City and its impact on public perception. Using a qualitative approach through content analysis and Pan and Kosicki's framing theory, this study identifies the syntactic, script, thematic, and rhetorical structures of the news studied. The results show that Kompas.com emphasizes more on regulatory and technical aspects, but does not touch on the emotional and personal aspects of society. A survey of 21 respondents showed that the majority were neutral towards the influence of news reporting, indicating that the effectiveness of framing in shaping public awareness and participation is not yet optimal. This study concludes that a more humanistic, contextual, and local narrative-based media approach is needed to increase public involvement in environmental issues.

Abstract

A harmonious family serves as a foundational pillar in fostering a stable and prosperous society. This study investigates the roles, strategies, challenges, and impacts of Islamic religious counselors in promoting family harmony in Tanjung Mulia Village, Hinai Subdistrict, Langkat Regency—an area marked by socio-cultural diversity and limited access to formal state services. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving the Head of KUA, religious counselors, village leaders, and married couples. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman model, involving data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing, with triangulation and peer review ensuring validity and reliability. Findings reveal that counselors serve not only as spiritual advisors but also as social facilitators and informal psychological support agents. Structured programs such as BRUS (School-Age Youth Guidance), BRUN (Marriage-Age Youth Guidance), and post-marriage counseling address mental, emotional, and spiritual readiness for family life. Strategies include five stages: planning, task distribution, implementation, evaluation, and reporting. Counseling is conducted in schools, prisons, mosques, and community centers, reflecting adaptability and reach. Key challenges include limited funding, low community literacy, inadequate infrastructure, and weak inter-agency collaboration. Nevertheless, the programs yield positive outcomes, such as improved spousal communication, enhanced role understanding, and reduced early marriage. Compared to formal state services, religious counselors provide grassroots, preventive family support that fills critical gaps. To optimize impact, this study recommends: (1) integrating counseling with national family programs, (2) enhancing counselor training in psychosocial and gender-sensitive skills, and (3) funding local-level initiatives. These findings offer transferable models for similar rural contexts.

Abstract

The rise of social media has created new opportunities for female preachers in Aceh, known as Teungku Inong (female clerics), to disseminate religious teachings in broader, more inclusive, and interactive ways. This development marks a significant shift in women's roles within digital da'wah (Islamic preaching), while simultaneously presenting new challenges particularly in balancing their public responsibilities as religious leaders with their private roles within the family. This study examines the impact of social media engagement on the family life of Teungku Inong, focusing on the dynamics of their dual roles and the strategies employed to navigate the demands of both professional and domestic spheres. Utilizing a qualitative case study approach, the research centers on female clerics in North Aceh and draws on theories of social roles and Islamic communication. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and content analysis of their social media presence. The findings reveal that the ability of Teungku Inong to manage dual responsibilities is strongly supported by both emotional and technical assistance from family members, particularly husbands and siblings. Key strategies include disciplined time management, open family communication, and the adaptive use of digital tools to facilitate da'wah activities without compromising domestic obligations. Sociologically, this study highlights the essential role of family support and digital literacy in enabling female preachers to thrive in the digital era. From the perspective of Islamic communication, the emergence of female clerics utilizing social media as a medium for da'wah represents a progressive development in both the professionalization of da'wah and the evolving roles of women in Islamic discourse. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of women's participation in digital religious spaces and the negotiation of work–family balance in socio-religious contexts

Abstract

The swift proliferation of digital media has altered the domain of Islamic preaching, transitioning da’wah from conventional religious venues to algorithmically influenced platforms that redefine the construction and negotiation of religious authority. This paper investigates how Muhammadiyah used @Mchannel1912 YouTube as a platform for mediatized da’wah, focusing on the reconfiguration of religious authority within the digital public realm. This study seeks to examine the techniques, obstacles, and ramifications of Muhammadiyah's digital involvement, emphasising the adaptation of institutional religious communication to media logic while preserving doctrinal integrity. This study utilises a qualitative methodology, including netnography, content analysis of specific YouTube videos, and comprehensive interviews with principal participants in digital da’wah creation. The analysis of data employed an interactive methodology of coding, categorisation, and interpretation, informed by the theoretical framework of mediatization of religion and digital religious communication. The findings indicate that Muhammadiyah’s YouTube strategy exemplifies a degree of partial mediatization, marked by the use of digital production processes while not entirely embracing interactive and algorithm-driven communication methods. This study theoretically enhances the literature on the mediatization of religion by introducing the idea of "partial mediatization," which elucidates how institutional religious actors selectively adjust to digital media contexts without completely assimilating platform logic. It enhances current studies by emphasising the micro-processes of interaction between media logic and institutional logic in organisational da’wah practices. The study also highlights the broader significance of mediatized da’wah for promoting moderate Islamic discourse, social justice, inclusion, and peaceful coexistence in contemporary digital public life

Abstract

Islamic communication is an interaction process based on Islamic values, aiming to create peace and salvation in this world and the hereafter. This principle was practiced by the prophets, especially Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), in conveying the message of Islam, including upholding amar ma’ruf nahi mungkar. As part of dakwah, amar ma’ruf nahi mungkar plays a significant role in building a just and prosperous society. In the context of Islamic communication, its implementation must adhere to Sharia principles such as Divinity, Humanity, Morality, and Moderation while considering societal conditions. However, challenges in the field reveal many unethical practices due to limited understanding, literacy, and experience. This often leads to negative impacts that outweigh the expected benefits. Therefore, this study highlights the importance of applying the principles of Islamic communication in upholding amar ma’ruf nahi mungkar to achieve optimal dakwah goals. This study employs a qualitative approach using literature review as the primary method, relying on written sources such as books, articles, and previous research to explore the concepts of Islamic communication in upholding amar ma’ruf nahi mungkar. The conclusion emphasizes that the application of Islamic communication can make a tangible contribution to creating a harmonious, tolerant, and just society.

Abstract

This article aims to explore and understand how Generation Z in Medan responds to and interacts with music broadcasted by Radio Prambors, a popular radio station among young people. This study is crucial for identifying the dynamics between the musical preferences of the younger generation and the way radio content is presented in the digital era, as well as its implications for broadcasting strategies. Using a qualitative approach, this research involves in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis to gather data from Generation Z listeners. Content analysis is used to interpret audience reactions to the music programming, with a source triangulation approach to enhance data validity, combining interviews, social media content analysis, and listener surveys. The research findings reveal three categories of audience reception: hegemony, where listeners fully accept the music choices presented; negotiation, where listeners are satisfied but offer suggestions for a more diverse genre presentation; and opposition, where some less featured music genres cause dissatisfaction among listeners. Furthermore, the interaction between listeners and the radio station shows that Radio Prambors Medan functions not only as a music provider but also as a mediator in a broader communication network that influences the musical tastes and preferences of its listeners. The discussion in this study integrates Manuel Castells' Network Society theory to explain how social and digital networks affect media consumption and interaction among Generation Z, highlighting the crucial role of digital technology adaptation in radio programming strategies. By understanding these dynamics, Radio Prambors Medan can more effectively craft strategies that appeal to its listeners, ultimately maintaining its relevance in the rapidly changing media landscape. The recommendations resulting from this study emphasize the importance of broader digital technology use and more intensive social media interaction to enhance listener engagement and enrich their listening experience.
